Does your scalp itch/tingle when your hair is in it's growth phase?
I watched a young lady on Youtube who kept her natural hair straight for 6 months. 6 months with no washing. She was proud of her length retention but her hair looked kind of awful
Long hair is cool and all, but it ain't that deep
My scalp doesn't become itchy when my hair is growing. I will get a random itch here and there, but it won't be in an itchy state. That said, I would not wear my hair straight for 6 months without washing it, no matter how good it looked. I'd have to be going through a health priority, the zombie apocalypse or something serious preventing me from washing it.
My wash day isn't just for cleansing, even though I don't allow my hair or scalp to get very dirty. My wash day is also for moisture, removing shed hair, checking on my hair, relaxation, maintenance and treatments. For the way I like my hair to feel on a daily basis there is no such thing as a moisturizer or leave-in that can compete with a good wash day. So, I like to balance style, moisture, and health in my hair. I am probably a person who could successfully wear my hair straight for 6 months, but I wouldn't want to. Washing my hair and re-straightening it once a month gives me more control when I want successive straight hair and I enjoy wash days.
Conditioner hits differently on clarified hair lol. Leave-ins hit differently on dry hair that is internally supple. Raking through my hair hits differently when my hair isn't tangled, no matter if my hair is straight or natural lol. Styles lay differently as they age. My hair still looks great at the end of a press, one day before I wash it out. Heck, it still looked good at the end of 3 month window when I pressed my hair a few weeks before my daughter was born, had her, then looked up after more time than I planned passed and I said "Shoot I need to wash my hair!" However, how good it looks isn't all that matters to me in my hair routine. Neither is retention.
I am happiest when my hair looks good, feels good, and maintenance runs smoothly whether it is a shorter or longer length. I also like playing with my hair. So, styles or states just for retention don't appeal to me. I would not enjoy my hair if I only wore it in styles that targeted growth. Even though I am one of those people who can get away with damaging things like overextending a press, I prefer to replenish my hair proactively instead of responding to hair problems that get away from me(when possible).
When it comes to the girl who was happy with that regimen. That's on her. I know it wouldn't be a good fit for me and I wouldn't follow that method, but I am not clutching pearls either lol. I can vouch for the ways low manipulation, and leaving the hair alone aids in retention, but a 6-month press isn't the way I would voluntarily go about applying it because it would set the other areas I value out of whack.
