This is a kinda cute story..
I was at Wally World (Walmart) checking out hair products (didn't buy anything) When I heard this soft voice behind me "Heeey Girl". I turn to see a cute lady that I didn't recognize. I said hello. She then said, “Girl, your hair sure has grown”. I said “Yeah it is a little longer” staring at her face, trying to recognize this person. I thought maybe it was someone I use to work with, maybe she has gained weight and that why I don’t recognize her. “What do you use on your hair these days”? she asked. I named a few shampoos and conditioners that I used. "How did you get those curls," (I was wearing a messy updo with a few tendrils hanging down) I told her I roller set my hair. “What hair color do you use”? I explain that I didn’t use commercial hair color. “So your hair is naturally that dark” I explained henna and indigo and started to realize that this was a hair interrogation. Finally I said “I’m sorry, but where do I know you from?” She then said, “ Oh, I never met you before, I just saw how long and pretty your hair was and I wanted to know what you did to it.”
The proof of perception difference it, my hair is not in good condition, (continuous hair drama) it’s a little passed shoulder length and a long way from what I call “long and pretty”. I think it proves that the perception on the street is a lot different than the perception on the board.
