products that damaged hair

Henna. I used a good quality henna, but I had a tremendous amount of breakage. From all the good things I heard about it, it may have been simply due to my novice mixing hand.

No real horror stories since starting my HHJ from severly damaged hair. However, Organix Coconut Milk was a close call. I'll use it again should I ever desire a tangled-ends, run-for-the-scissors mess.

It's so crazy how differently different hair reacts because my hair LOVES Organix Coconut Milk, the shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner and anti breakage serum...my hair loves it all!

OMG I remember doing this :lachen:and I remember the first time I got finger waves with the brown gel, I was soooooo happy. I kept them in for like 2 whole weeks and kept reappyling more brown gel to the parts where the hair was lifting off. I bought a biiiggg tub of brown gel.

Lol. What about the scrunch waves w/that brown boo boo gel? My hairdresser would let my finger waves on the front of my head get almost dry (I would have a wet set in the back of my head) then lift the back of the waves up in scrunch em toward the front to get dem waves poppin in 3D-lookin' like the Predator. That mess was so damaging. You could hear my hairs snapping as she did it. Lol, gawd that was such a ghetto hairstyle and I loved it! Then she might spray some of that color on the waves...and glitter. All that was super drying to my hair, lead to a lot of breakage.

I would have to say, tea rinse, I did that once, and my hair was so dry, water couldn't hydrate it, I guess maybe I didn't condition it correctly, or moisturize it enough, and my hair broke, and I just decided to cut it and start over, my ends were really thin, but I had dyed them like 3 times so the dye plus tea rinse=DISASTER......and as of now, that's it, everything else I use does wonders for my hair, I think my hair is loving me for not being a fool and jumping on bandwagons.....

There was also this natural straightening product that my sister and I used that smelled very strongly of vinegar, that also made my hair dry. (I can't remember the name of the product though)

Was it Copa? The one Debbie Allen marketed? Tried it and my 4b head laughed at it, the said "peace out" and started breaking off...

We must have had the same hairdresser :lachen:and I remember mine was the waves in the front with a flip in the back. The car on the way home had a strong pungent stench of baked on brown gel I had to open the windows. The pillows at home were stained with brown gel, but I was too happy to care. I first saw those waves in that magazine called "Black Hair Styles" or something and I worked for two weeks at my job, saved up the money and BAM!!!

Perm repair=Strange hair..

Lusters pink oil=Very dry hair...

Sun in=Dry & brittle hair..

Feria color/or how-ever its spelled=NEVER AGAIN broke my hair off/hair to cut a lot...

Dr.Miracles any-thing=Bald spots for me/N E V E R AGAIN!

Happy Hair Growing!

This is one brand that I don't ever want in my house again. I used the healing oil once on a spot in my hair and it got worse and spead a little. Never Again!!! :nono:

Relaxers, Feria Hair Color, Herbal Essences Hair color, actually any commercial hair color, Ampro Prostyl Gel (it holds like no other, so I still keep a jar under my sink for when I need to slick my hair down something fierce), Sun-In, Murray's Grease (the grease didn't break my hair, it was me trying to wash it out), those black stretchy scrunchies you get from the BSS or swap meet type flea markets; they usually come in clear cellophane packs @ like 15 for $2.00 (my hair would get all kinds of tangled up in those things)

African pride highlights. Me and my best friend used them and both our hair broke off. I remember combing my hair and losing nothing but blond strands but I was so clueless about hair care I didn't know what to do but get braids.

I never even got my hair cut, one day it was just black again cause the color broke off.

ACV - I think it dried my hair out. I'm actually scared to try again.
I'm the same way. It turned out stiff and wiry like when I use too much protein. It felt like it would snap on the spot.

Henna- I tried two times and it made my hair Dry and Brittle. (I may attempt to henna again in the future because there seems to be so many positive results for people with thin hair).

I only tried it once but that was before LHCF. My hair came out dry and brittle and bone straight :perplexed So I ended up shaving my head in the 1st pic in my siggy because there was no recovery for it. Now I use a henna rinse. It's easy, not messy and leaves my hair soft.

I read about a Miss Jessies recipe somewhere on this board and gave it a try. I think I put too much wax in it because you probably could have ripped the hair right out of my head by touching it. Haven't fooled with wax again since then.

Sun In for me back in high school caused breakage but gave great color didn't it? lol

And just recently I tried a homemade avocado deep conditioner with coconut milk, EVOO and honey, made my hair feel like straw for days! Ugh, never again will I use that stuff together, EVOO in my conditioner is great but for some reason that mixture of products did not do well in my hair.

Henna - - I used a good quality henna from the Indian store. It irritated my scalp, made my hair brittle and dry. It also loosened my hair texture. I probably won't mess with it again.

ORS Olive oil edge contol - it was like nair for hair :perplexed. It completely removed areas of my hairline within a week of use. I threw it out and stopped using it and my hairline returned within a month. It obviously contains an ingredient that I am allergic to.

Jazzing hair color = Dry/breakage

Box Hair color = Dry/breakage

Clairol Luminize = Started out great but broke off eventually

Any kind of hairspray, setting lotion or foam dries out my hair

Anything by Pantene

Adhesive for wigs and extensions

One and Only Argan Oil Shampoo/Conditioner = Like putting cheap body lotion in my hair

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream = Gross, gunky dull hair. Even when I use a tiny bit.

Heat styling = A little OT but it's my hair's fiercest enemy.
You sound like my hair twin lol. I'm going to try using bobbypins on my lacefronts. I'm allergic to everything.

From what I've heard from some diehard henna users, my mixture was probably too acidic. My hair was in BAD shape after that, and it took forever to get it back to normal. I think I should have done a bit more research for the best mix instead of being so gung ho on getting that henna shine! :spinning:

100% Unrefined Shea Butter. My hair really can't stand shea butter. I was using it for twists and twist outs and the knots and tangles were ridiculous, and it would make it all extra hard. When I finally put two and two together and stopped using the SB, combing my hair and detangling became MUCH easier because said knots and tangles disappeared.

But then again, my hair hates all oils and butters. Olive oil dries out my hair something fierce. *shrugs*

Can I say coconut oil? Always dry and crunchy after 3 days of lightly oiling. Castor oil gave me pimples (on the scalp), but I still use a little sometimes.

Tresemme Heat Protectant. That stuff made my hair so sticky, it took me way too long to detangle and blow dry. Not to mention I saw more hair on the floor than I've ever seen. I promptly poured it down the drain (I liked the bottle so I kept it), never again.

yea I wanted to like thisbut nah son. I can't do spray heat protectants they are all drying. I don't flat ironeso shea butter is my best heat protectant.

Droid typing leads to typos for me

:look: ALL things Aphogee :nono: , ACV rinses (it worked like once and once it dried.... church was OVAH!!!!), baking soda (never....again. EVER). Those are my top three so far.

EDTA: Pantene for curly hair. :nono:

yeah I tried that baking soda too. :nono:. can we say set back?

Also my hair hates mineral oil so that jar of ORS that just says "olive oil" gave me nothing but brittle nasty unmoisturized hair!

destine2grow Ever since I tried banana brulee my hair has been breaking like crazy. Now I know its the banana brulee and not my technique!! Thanks for helping me realize this (half the jar later :ohwell:)

Relaxers and as some of the other posters said Spritz! What was I thinking? LoL. I just to lay it on heavy on my edges and by the end of the day they'd be sticking out, white, and hard. Or I'd sweat and it would run down and make my forhead sticky! Eww
