OT and Entertainment Forums

Hmmm. I visit the Off Topic all the time. I do skip over some of the threads because I don't agree with the titles. I don't go to the entertainment b/c I don't even get television reception of any kind in my home.

If the point you are considering is that we should think on whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Then you are right. I know I have to make more of an effort.

I don't think having discussions with people who are not Christians is a bad idea if you don't forget who you are and bring a godly perspective into an ungodly world. With that said, it is easy to fool ourselves thinking that is what we are doing an we are just wrapped up in the world anyway.

Same here. For this reason, I've stopped watching most local news programs. Don't get me wrong, I believe it's important to stay well-informed, but a lot of the stories aren't really news, anyway. Instead, it's largely "infotainment" and sensationalistic coverage of grisly events, but barely any mention, let alone analysis, of the important issues of the day. So I try to stick with higher-quality sources (National Public Radio, PBS, the New York Times) for the real news (and even then, I have to be selective).

Also, I made a decision a while back to stop partaking of gossip of any kind. It's amazing how much gossip masquerades as news and entertainment these days, especially with the rise of the internet. Christians, however, are commanded not to gossip. So I stopped visiting the gossipy websites that I used to frequent, and I canceled my "entertainment" magazine subscriptions. I found better ways to use my time.

OP: Great topic!

I recently gave my tv away and I have significantly cut back my internet time. I get an hour a day of non school related internet use. I know it might sound extreme but I refuse to be influenced by the world. I've found that I am much more productive too :yep:

I used to frequent OT and occasionally ET. but there really is no point of me going into the ET forum b/c I don't even know what's going on in "celeb world" I've recently decided that OT is okay so long as I'm not getting caught up in anybody's drama or what I call "bait" topics.

Right now my focus is on God and myself. That means if it's not going to build my relationship with God or help me improve myself it's really not necessary in my life.

I do visit them..but don't hang too much there...OT...is personally triggering.
when a conflict arises,there...as it invariably does...it's the most humbling experience to witness myself...as really a very loving Christian to
transform to this unpleasant part of myself..........
a finger pointing...I.am better than you Christian ..it's upsetting.

But I do visit at times as the concerns or issues expressed there do not differ or deviate really...from the CF. It's in the perspectives ..sometimes
and sometimes not..Christians are there too...who don't neccesarily post n CF
They are there...and needed
I agree ..excellent topic

As far as I'm concerned, OT is a great evangelistic forum. Most of the members that are there, don't come in the Chrisitianity forum, so...I go there.

I don't always participate in threads that aren't right, but I do read sometimes and always find someone I can pm to talk too. I have had some great prayer times with folks and some have even come to know the Lord...I have even spoken to some over the phone and had wonderful convo's with them and had a time of prayer. The results are wonderful and I'm sure God is pleased.

I'm certain that in the first three years of Jesus ministry, you could find him with those that didn't believe, sharing the Father's love and His Kingdom principals. We have been called to do the same, so for me...OT is a prime place!

Blessings to all!

The question seems very baiting (in my opinion).

As another poster mentioned, it seems to lead to a discussion of "I'm a better Christian than those that do....."

In my walk, I have found things that I don't agree with, "I" turn away,.......... but I don't give judgement to those that do things I have turned away from.

Just my opinion. :ohwell:

I go in both forums it all depends on what the topic(s) are about. Some times it gets very heavy in those forums. I just post to something I like and move one. I know several ladies who refuse to go into the other forums and just stick on the hair topics only. I do not post to every thing that is in those forums just the ones that I know that I am interested in.

I hope I'm not giving the off the wrong idea...I'm definitely not claiming to be perfect. I have visited the OT and entertainment forums plenty of times and posted. I know I struggle with falling into gossip sometimes, especially at work (in which I'm working to be better). I just wanted to seek advice from other christian women, I'm defintely not trying to judge anyone :nono:

I am not one to give advice, I can only speak for what works for me, since I know me better than anyone else. :yep:

Threads that I find offensive, I turn away from, in any of the forums. It is not unusual for me to not get past the first couple of posts and I feel my conviction telling me to turn away. :yep:

Again, thats me and just my opinion.

This is a great question. It makes you re-examine yourself against your beliefs. Good thread. :yep:

I visit but not as often as I used to. I'm working on cutting out my participation in unproductive threads.

I understand posting the question as it's one I ask myself...
so...I am grateful OP brought it up....the forums are after all..a microcosmic representation of the world we live in....and as Christians we are always confronted with making those decisions everyday in terms of what we choose to participate in and what we don't

..the bolded is my issue.. number one ;(
unfortunately in offline personal life ...as well as forum exchanges.
I have a quick temper... and in the Bible it warns against
pride..self rightousness...anger...all of which when seems to erupt easier in OT...for many reasons that are none of OT's fault..but mine:)
I have to keep praying about that...

anyways... your view..which I admire
anyone who can give space to another's opinion that diverges radically from an opposing Christian view point, and with a sincere reluctance or distaste to judge is showing agape Christ's unconditional love....
Thank you

Excellent post! Blessings to you also!!!!!!!!

There have been many a thread that have gone *poof*

The bolded is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo true!:yep:

God is EVERYWHERE! Sadly, the devil tries to be everywhere too. I've seen what could have been very good threads go completely south in all the different categories (i.e. OT, ENT, Christianity, Hair, etc.).

Sometimes, God can use you to turn a thread around. I feel He's done that to me.

Furthermore, at least some of the topics in OT and ENT involve issues that I feel completely okay discussing. Discussing certain things doesn't always involve acting "ungodly". For example, I started a thread the other day in OT asking ladies if they had been sexually abused and kept quiet and if so, why. I saw commercials from an organization called darkness to light, and I have a 3 year old niece, so a topic like that concerns me.

Likewise, there are some issues that are important. Some topics (i.e. a lot of the sex ones, or ones that involve strongly sexual content), I often avoid, but I'm not against people who feel that God is calling them to say something important! After all, we are also called to witness and bring others to the Lord!

For myself, because I know what my own temptations are: I need to be a more selective and add the Political forum to the list where there is a lot of name calling that I need to NOT fall into. :ohwell:

WWJD? No really, would Jesus just stay away from OT because people are talking about things that are not about the Bible? I go there to fellowship in a different way. I can go there and demonstrate my friendliness and my willingness to get to know people on whatever spiritual level they are on. I think everyone knows who is a Christian and who isn't on here. I am open and available to know more about people and more than willing to share my testimony in part or wholly with anyone who will benefit from it. Whether it is amongst my fellow Christians or amongst those who are still on the fence about what they believe. I go to the OT forum, I read, I enjoy and participate.

I think I am the same person over there as I am here-- I talk way too much and overanalyze everything. I trust no sources of anything without checking it out for myself. lol

I let my friends keep me posted...:sekret:

I can't keep up with all of the forums, I need to keep up with my Mega Tek and Ovation Hair Care threads. And ever since we started the President Obama forum, there's nothing else.

I love the Make-Up forum and the Cooking, Health and Fitness.... and this one ........................ but of course. :yep:

I just can't keep up or handle the shock  from OT and ET; but I know who to ask 'what's up' :lachen:

I think participating in the OT and Entertainment Forums is okay, but I don't participate in every conversation/thread in those or any other forum. There have been times that I've stayed out of threads on the hair forum because of how the discussion has deteriorated.

I am always mindful when I post that my avatar reference Galatians 2:20,
"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

That scripture represents my witness and I must be mindful of that.

You have to be careful not to get wrapped up in some topics. Some I steer clear of. Some I will chime in with a Christian perspective. Some are harmless and I join in. I don't think that Christians should disassociate themselves with non Christians, otherwise, how do others learn from you?

I totally agree!!!:yep::yep::yep:

I pick/choose and refuse topics, mostly relative to my experiences, but for the most part, ITA.... :yep:

Members tend to also post Christian topics and questions over there (OT) as well, and I won't miss the opportunity to answer with Scriptures, if necessary.

Everyone's walk is different, whatever their conviction; although I've seen members try to take creative 'jabs' at Christians who post outside of the CF. They even take jabs at those who DON'T post there, saying the Christian community is "silent" on a issue..

To all this I say, if we strive to please no one but God-- we will stay OUT of people bondage. Amen

I do. And I will be honest, as someone else said, the original question seems very baiting.

I don't see why this question is really even an issue. It seems that some people don't recognize that we can all be well-rounded and have many interests and still remain true to our God. I would be very bored on this forum if I did not participate in the OT forum. There's nothing wrong with that. YOU can control the content of your posts and avoid threads that YOU may feel go against God and the Word.
