Not going to perm, my front center edges, anymore!!

My widows peak area (no widow peak actually, just want you to be able to visualize the area), has always been the saddest part of my hair. I think I am genetically thinner in that area, not noticeably so to anyone without a microscope, but bothersome to me. I decided I am not going to perm this area anymore. I figure I can baby it, press it out, whatever. And use MTG on the area (not using MTG anywhere else, it's too rough on my hair).

Has anyone else resorted to/ or considered this? What outcome have you had?

You have a good plan. I don't relax the very front or the very back of my hair very time I relax but I relax that area every other time I relax. And it's in better condition. The very front of my hair line in thinning and I'm trying to keep as much of it as possible.

I thought about that as well, relaxing every other time. I know I will gradutae to that level. And getting that hair straight with the scarf method. BTW I love the colors in your hair. is that henna?

this is why I stretch my relaxers to 3 months at a time.. the time in between gives me much time to thicken nape and front hairline. I also add oil (for added protection) to my relaxer creme. But yes I noticed thinning edges too and why I am so glad I can stretch to keep the chemicals off the hairline so frequently. This has helped the condition of my hair drastically..especially in those problem areas!

Yes, this is what I do also.

The weaker areas of my hair I only relax every other time.

By doing this I feel as if Im giving those sensitive areas a break.

My edges have always suffered because that's where most beauticans would put the relaxer first during but now that I'm doing it myself it's growing back in but I noticed it doesn't grow as fast/thick as the rest of my hair. I'm not going to stop applying relaxers to my edges but what I'm going to do is apply Profectiv Healthy Ends on my scalp & hair in that area to see if I'll experience/retain more hair just in that section...

Me too...I'm practically bald on my right temple :look: This is a great idea, and I'm going to skip the hairline altogether this touch up and let my bald spots be.

I have wondered about this also because my sides are thin (but it growing in reallllll slow) due to applying that black hair gel to my hair when I was a teenager AND overperming. I think I will skip perming my sides and nape also and use MTG in those areas and see what happens. I also have thinning hair at the center of my hairline...I don't know how that happened but I'm going to omit from perming at every relaxer and see what happens. Good thread:)

thanks, no not henna, but I'm thinking about trying it.

I'm starting to wonder if my sides are thin genetically as well. When my bio father made me with my mother, he was old and balding. Maybe I get it from him.

I don't think so Blos. I do believe that we can have genetic disposition to certain hair traits though.

I know that mine is genetic too for being so thin on the sides, but I also notice that sometimes if I even touch my front edges the hair comes out with the bulb on the end. I wonder if it has a quick turn over rate, grow..shed..grow..shed. Never gets much length. I have eliminated the bun since I hate ragedy edges and want all hair smooth and in place. I think I may be manipulating the hair line too much.

On my next retouch, I will advise my stylist to leave my edges until next time. I can't stretch my whole head too long, I will have major breakage.
Good suggestion!

Your hair is pretty. I agree 100% with Supergirl.

I think my mom and then I later on just simply manipulated the hell out of my sides

Well, I don't relax anymore but I can tell you that it is most likely from relaxing that you have that thinning hair in the center of your head. I've gone to a couple of beauticians who've always commented about the thin area in the center of my head that they commonly find in women who decide to go natural. It's very noticeable in my head because the rest of my hair is so thick.

Also, Dlewis, I think that stretching the amount of time between relaxing the front part of your hair (around the temple and sides) should help the thinning and is a great idea. The new will grow back thicker and stronger if you treat it properly.

TODAY! I want to wait until I get home, but feel I won't be able to so I'm doing from this here computer! :)

If anything goes wrong with the CD, however, (I can't figure out how to upload the pictures, God forbid)... oh well, you'll have to wait for Pebs. That'll be another week or so.

Mail me the pictures, I'll post them. :lachen: We've been waiting on you for two years. Come on Blos. come on

That's a damn shame! :lachen:

Two years? Lawd mercy! :lachen: Too lazy to buy a camera; then bought a camera and it expired and was unusable; and then waited another year to buy another camera and three weeks after purchase, begin snapping pictures once it was discovered what the "shutter" was. LOL!

Soon, very soon... ;)

this is exactly where I think the results of loss edges come from...stylist putting it on first. My mom now relaxes my hair and we do the edges and nape last!!

That's the way it is supposed to be done anyway, Inner... I don't know WHY so many stylists don't know this. The front/sides of the head is LAST!

I had to tell my own stylist this... and he went to Cosmo school.

I thought about doing that for a while now, maybe I should just relax this area every other relaxer like some people suggested.

I'm in hairline recovery too. My hairline is the last to be relaxed (if I decide to relax it), and the relaxer stays on for the last five minutes of the whole relaxing process.

I used to relax my hairline and hair bone straight, which caused burns and lots of damage. Now I've got little baby hairs sprouting up all over. My hairline was bald, and now it's slowly filling in. My sparse temples made a comeback too.

I rarely wrap my hair, I don't used gel, and I don't wear tight hair styles. If I want the edges smooth, I moisturize, seal with oil, comb gently, and tie with a scarf. If I'm setting my bangs for the next day, I pincurl or use mesh rollers with no tension.

Exactly!! I always have to tell my stylist this, too, because if not, she will relax that part first.:perplexed

I think I'm going to start self relaxing because I want to stop relaxing my nape, and for some reason, every stylist looks at me like I'm crazy because I ask them to relax it last. Plus, I'm really tired of scalp burns...

I don't get it... why does a non-cosmetology licensed person have to tell a cosmetology licensed person that you don't start in the front?
