In the summer's more humid climate I can use more glycerin-containing products. For dry twisting I used Qhemet Biologics Honeybush tea soft gel with a little Burdock root butter cream and got nice twistout. And I use a lot of conditioner, co-wash, rinseout, leave in -- and overlay a butter or castor oil over that on my ends.
Good point, where you live / the season is important. Maybe where you live glycerin and humectants strip you hair instead of moisturizing it (it depends on the air humidity level). I live in a very dry place and I have to avoid the following things in order to keep my hair moisturized: glycerin and juices, panthenol, honey/agave/molasses, pure aloe, lecithin, jojoba/avocado/castor oils to seal... all humectants if pure or in the first ingredients.
They suck all the moisture out of my hair in minutes, no matter what I use with them.
I don't know if this is your case. It's one of the many possible options, though.
