probably twisting. Unlike most naturals, my hair takes twisting as an opportunity to tangle unless I do really massive ones. non bueno

Ditto. My hair hates twisting. It just tangles onto itself which sucks since I like twistouts for certain styles.

I chose styles. I had the middle nape in the back break because I like a nice, tight, sleek puff. I did it far too often. This year I'm not doing puffs often. Only once in a while.

Rough handling - I'm very impatient so I can't let my hair get really tangled because I won't take the time to detangle properly.

Not enough moisture - I used to only moisturize my hair in the morning after I co-wash, but my hair needs to be moisturized at night as well.

Braids - Too tight on edges and I didn't take care of them (re-doing edges, moisturizing). I think I would have been MBL already (or maybe even WL) if I hadn't worn braids for the first year after my BC.

oh my gosh I have chills of fear just by reading. :nono:

is it just the ends that are damaged or a big part of length?
damn, why the hairdresser didn't recommend you to do a cut ???

I now have straight hair (from root to tip), loose waves, loose curls, and cabbage patch spots.
I forgot to mention that she did cut a good 2-3 inches off.

For me, it was being rough while detangling.

I am not patient enough with my ends and I hate taking forever to detangle...

Wash and Go's (contributed to SSK)
Puffs (also contribute to SSK)
Not trimming/dusting enough (which lead to splits and whaddaya know...SSKs!)
Being too rough with detangling (though this hasn't caused me much breakage, its gotta hurt somewhere else...)

Yep, definitely. My hair just didn't like getting pulled on with the heat, and it made my hair rough, even blow drying on low. Then, because my hair kept wanting to shrink back up, my ends got all snarled, so when I went back to my natural texture my hair was ridiculously tangled. I noticed a couple of curls (like an entire curl, not just a strand) by my temples were shorter, like I had cut them. I was p.o.ed.

Wait did you mean a Dominican Blow Out or just blowing it out with a blow dryer because I plan to do the latter

what did you have done to your head? a Dominican blowout or a hard press....I experienced some heat damage on my right side from a hard press at a salon but thankfully it was only a small portion...sorry to hear about your hair...

:sad::sad:

wash and go.
wash and go.
wash and go.
shrinkage.
wash and go.
If I wanted to stay the same length forever, I'd wash and go everyday. My hair absolutely DETESTS being allowed to shrink up and do its own thing.

and have you ever think about re-BC ?

I've already BC'ed twice lol! ONce in '09 and then this past may. Plus, I'm getting married in June so I'm trying to hold on to the length that I have left :lachen:
I've done hard core treatments including steam treatments so I haven't been experiencing any alarming breakage, thank God!

I had my hair blown out and flat ironed by a *clears throat* Natural Hair Specialist. :nono:

I don't get much breakage but when I do its my own fault. I can be very inpatient with my hair when it comes to detangling. I'm getting better though. just a couple more sessions of anger management :look:

none of the above. i never used heat or colored or did any of that.

my breakage stemmed from excessive dryness. i'm starting to think something is going on internally because i've never met anyone with such dry, brittle hair.

I voted 'blow drying' because the last time I did it my ends were a crispy mess. However, I think most of my damage comes from laziness and under-moisturizing my hair.

blowdrying for sure!!! Im gonna try to wear my hair curly more this year. I got lazy during 2010, and kept blowfrying my hair. This year, I am getting back into a regimen. I had a lot of breakage (for me at least) last year. I did a good trim, and now Im getting back in the groove. My ends get so crunchy and dry when I wear it curly, so I gotta find a holy grail to keep my hair moisturized properly. Bunning makes my ends scream for mercy, so I can only wear pony's.

Wash and go's!! I had to have 2 inches trimmed last month and 1 over the summer all from wearing WNG's. I'll be straightening more this year, washing less often, and trying to keep the same style a week or more.

Over-manipulation (combing/brushing). It's definitely best for me to wear my hair in styles that last at least 5 days at a time.

3. Switching products (aka looking for the next holy grail.) When you find something that works. STICK WITH IT! :look:
5. Using the wrong products. If cones work for you then by all means USE THEM. If natural products work for you then by all means USE THEM.

Yes to these two! I think product switching and trying to mimic everyone and their mama's technique has caused me the most breakage. My hair just thrives with cones and trying to be like everyone else I stopped using and got more breakage. Also for me protein is a no go (only light ones like silk protein work) but I kept trying to force it because I just knew that was the missing key.:nono:

I had so many products/techniques that gave me great results but I couldn't stick with it because I wanted to try the next best thing. smh

air dried hair. :nono: me no likey. ♥

Same for me 100%!

Do a rollerset instead of a blowout...it requires less heat and combing and can get your hair pretty straight! :yep: If you want it bone straight, you'll have to flat Iron afterwards though.

Do you think I could ask the salon to do a roller set in order to trim my hair

Too much protein
and not protecting my ends.

Last summer I wore my fro out everyday, by the end of the summer when I did a length check 2 inches had disappeared :(

So now I PS 24/7 until i reach my goal.

Since I been natural this time around I have not experienced any damage since I have eliminated heat, color, and high manipulation. But when I was natural the first time I had damage from the blow frier and color mostly.

Iwas 4r years natural with no breakage & good. That is- until I let someone else do my hair :O. I thought it was strange when I saw a clump of my hair come out in her fine tooth comb. By then she was already to thhe front of my hair (where I can see). I never knew she was ripping the Back of my hair out- I just thought it was a painful combing - but no big deal... boy was I wrong

by the way, great thread that will help others who start their HHJ or that they are in a impasse, to know what to not to do or how to improve it !!

thanks EllePixie !!

Trying to comb second day hair. I realized I can't straighten my hair without some kind of heat protector anymore. I have an inch of heat damaged hair in my bangs.
