LOL I hear ya'. Church seems to be where I get the most "when are you going to get a perm?" comments...

LOL, yes, church folk are the worst. I explained that I was trying not to put chemicals in my hair.

They were like umph, umph, umph...

LOL! Ok, I see /images/graemlins/smile.gif. And yeppers!

Thank you so much Sassygirl, /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was talking to my husband this morning about the shower filter because all of us have been saying how dry our hair is and we all used different products, so that's what made me think maybe it was the water.

I only have had one real relaxer. It made my hair like bubblegum and I had to chop it all (more than 3 years of growth, well past BSL).

I started growing in 1998 with just 2 inches. It is now BSL when curly and almost waistlength when strechted (I never straigthen it though). When short I used a lot of hairgrease, scarfs as headbands (kind of sad that they dont look right now) and lots of hair-jewelry. It looked great and got lots of compliments!

The pics in signature are one year old...

Hey Thanks /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well It differs really. The pics are a whole year old and even though im not a PJ /images/graemlins/wink.gif thats a looooong time product wise.

I try to use natural products. My favorit shampoo (actually the only product I will keep buying, but It is danish and only available here I think) is decylpolyglucose based (sp??) but when that is not available I will dilute ordinary shampoo with honey. I wash and comb 2 a week. Have tried to do it once a week but I got all kinds of yucky-ness /images/graemlins/wink.gif

As a semi 'deep' treatment I like to mix conditioner with honey (and perhaps aloe). Just now I use K-pac too as a protein treatment. Its okay but not something I will buy again.

As a leave-in I use ordinary condtioner, PM the conditioner (will not buy again)or shea butter. I use aloe as a smoother.

I seldom clarify but when I do I use baking-soda mixed with shampoo.

I try to keep it simple.

Very nice hair Katrine. Do you ever rollerset? Just curious. /images/graemlins/grin.gif There are a couple people on here that have hair like yours and they rollerset on occasion and it looks great too. Welcome to the board btw!

Katrine, your hair is beautiful and very healthy. I love the look /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Are you sure you're a 3b? Your hair looks more like 3a to me.

Thanks Crysdon /images/graemlins/smile.gif

No Im definitely not a 3a. My hair does not go straighter when shorter (It goes straight up though LOL) and I have corkscrews and not bouncy curls. But my hair is a mixture of 3a,3b and 3c. On top I have 3c hair, in front I have 3a/b hair and the rest is mostly 3b hair.

Its funny about Andre's hairtypes though...I have had people call my hair 3b/4a, 3b, 3c and now 3a /images/graemlins/wink.gif well it is curly anyway...

Re: Naturals.. how did u get there? Katrine

Katrine, when you say your hair "bubblegummed", please explain. Also I think that naturally curly hair can really be funny when it comes to relaxers. It is often resistant and often hair stylists over process it. bonjour.

Re: Naturals.. how did u get there?

I am another natural, longest length at bra strap when stretched. Past the shoulders (about 6" on the sides-when stretched). When unstretched it is past the shoulders. It looks a lot like Katrine's actually when shampooed and left to dry oiled without any manipulation, but is very thick and cottony looking sometimes when it needs oil or conditioning. I am a 3b with some straight areas; my roots grow in straight and it curls about 2 -3 inches out. My hair has a lot of personalities. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gifwhen brushed it is a big thick mass of mop. /images/graemlins/drunk.gif I use natural products and follow a combination method of hair care. I posted my 2003 hair regime on this site and you could check the search feature. Sometimes I am tempted to relax because I have so much shrinkage and then I talk my self out of it. Now hearing about Katrine's bubblegum experience!!!! I also use henna regularly. My hair is very fine and needs the extra weight. I have nice curls until I brush my hair and the curls are gone. Does that happen to you Katrine? I am growing out layers; do not use any heat or chemicals but if I could without damage I would be a user /images/graemlins/grin.gif(lol). sometimes my hair gets on my nerves and other times I love it. Sometimes I covet thick strong 4ab hair, I have to confess, and then I would relax it, haha. Bonjour.

Re: Naturals.. how did u get there? Katrine

Well I dont think anybody here should fear that their hair got as ruined as mine. I knew nothing about relaxers or how to care for relaxed hair so I did a lot of mistakes.

A few months prior I had gotten a curly 'white' perm and in the shop that did the relaxer they told me there just had to be three month apart. After all I read that is not true, You should NEVER mix these perms.

They said I shouldn't wash my hair I think a week before. I interpreted that I shouldn't use shampoo and still rinsed with conditioner everyday. I met to my appointment with wet hair and the woman was shaking her head but did not warn me of anything bad.

The end result were that my hair was straight frizz. I did not know you had to rollerset etc. I knew nothing about caring for relaxed hair.

Furthermore when my hair was wet it became like gum. I could not comb it when wet because the hair strecthed like it was made of paste or gum (you could keep pulling at a hair and It would just get longer and longer). I lost a lot of hair. The first thing people said when I cut it was that *Your hair is SO thick!!!*

I 'transitioned' (did not know that was what I did /images/graemlins/wink.gif ) for 4-5 month and then I just got a friend to cut where it started to curl.

So noone should fear that- I was just stupid or actually ignorant...so my hair packed and left!!

Mahalialee4

I never brush my hair. I dont think I could get a brush through it...at least not without considerable damage.

If I did brush I would get a huge sidelooped afro, no curl definition at all.

Re: Naturals.. how did u get there?Katrine

I section my hair and clip it and brush small sections, starting from the bottom layers from the tip to the root. I never try to do the whole head thing. I use a paddle brush and I brush about 1x a week all over and as needed to distribute oils very gently from time to time during the week if I am going to be wearing a hair style French Roll etc.) When I am wearing it single twisted and pinned with plastic pins between shampoos, I do not comb or brush. This is my resting style. I just unwind, moisturize and oil and rewind. Oh my goodness, the stretching hair would have totally freaked me out!!!!! /images/graemlins/shocked.gif /images/graemlins/shocked.gif /images/graemlins/drunk.gif Didn't you totally trip? Bonjour.

well, i'm not natural beana, but like you, i have been thinking about it /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif(for me-on and off) for a year now. my last touch up was august of '02. i had like, ALOT of new growth! last night i made the decision and went ahead and retouched/texturized. i'm sitting here right now even looking at pics of myself before i went ahead and relaxed at age 19. my hair was at bra strap length then /images/graemlins/laugh.gif. i'm wondering if i could go au natural again. i'll have to think it about it somemore. i relax 2-3x yr and i like the option a mild relaxer gives me--straight or curly, but i do miss the thickness of my natural hair overall and having no chemicals in it. as i prepared for a retouch last night, i ran my hands thru it and couldn't believe how thick it was /images/graemlins/shocked.gifand if i should really do this, as i do every 4-5 months /images/graemlins/tongue.gif. it won't be that thick again until may/june /images/graemlins/confused.gif. good luck with your decision. we're here to help you no matter what you decide /images/graemlins/laugh.gif.
