Natural Family Members?

It's just me and one other cousin. And she moved several states away, so whenever there is a family function, I'm the lone natural head. I would love for my sis to stop relaxing, only because she's wigging it the majority of the time anyways and the relaxer really isn't doing anything for the health of her hair. And it's not like she is afraid of short hair, because she'll cut her hair in a heartbeat. I don't stress, but I do mention it every blue moon. Who knows, maybe when this thread gets bumped in a year or two, I'll be abel to say that my sister is natural now too.

Nary a one :nono:. In fact, most of the times when I go home I get asked "when am I going to do something with my hair?" Don't see that changing any time soon, especially since I've been natural for almost 4 years now and the happiest I've seen my family since then was when I straightened it last year :ohwell:.

MOst women in my family are natural, we've got loose and loced nappy's all over the globe! I do have a few cousins who are slaves to the weave but they maintain nappy hair underneath it all.

My whole family is natural!!! My DH and kids are natural (obviously lol). My mom ans sister transitioned and BC last year (my mom BC last September after a 2 month transition. My sister BC last Oct after a 4 month transition) after they saw how great my hair was doing. They are loving it!! I'm tempted to do a natural photo session with my whole family because we all have such a range of curls. It's beautiful!!!

I do!
My mom was first. She went straight to locks 7 years ago. (They are nearing WL now) My baby sis was next. She went Natural her 1st year in college. Last year when she started Law school she went to locks (She started with SL hair when she locked, so now the locks are already CBL).

I was next in 2008. I got my last perm in 2007 when I landed my 1st job out of grad school. In 2008 I BC'd.

My adult cousins (sisters) both are natural. When they went to Spelman they felt encouraged to go natural.... They told me a couple weeks ago me and my sis were inspirations.

My other cousin same age as me has locks. She went natural about 5 years ago. Her locks are APL, but she keeps them done up....Her mom is also natural but she keeps it short!

Our other cousin (an engineer/mid twenties) recently went natural...she has a honey brown in her hair now....

My mother in law is also going natural, and my brother's wife recently did the big chop last year. She wore weaves to transition, but I sent her a "Thank God I'm Natural" t-shirt, and she was inspired & encouraged to wear her fro out now!

My best friend also went natural when she got pregnant last year...She transitioned the whole pregnancy, then BC'd when the baby was a few months old.....

Its been great great great. :yep:My hubby was initially unsupportive but he is a big natural fan. He loves how big my hair is and encourages women to go natural...but have HEALTHY natural hair...not the dried-out, unhealthy looking stuff (He had the nerve to think I was going for "that" look).....:lachen:

I have quite a few family members with locs, but loose haired naturals like myself... not many. Everyone else is either relaxed, jheri curled (smh @ Uncle Lee) or rocking weaves.

Most of the people in my extended family are natural or have been natural for decades in the past. My hubby, myself, and kitty are natural. Our future children will be natural until they decide they want to do something else with their hair. That's just how we roll.

I encouraged one of my BFF's to go natural.... Her hair is goregeous....:look:

My mom is natural - (she has Chicoro's hair):lick:
However... all the rest of my family members( sister, nieces) are hooked like crackheads on Weaves and relaxers. :nono::nono:

They keep trying to convince me to go to the "Domincans" .... or get weaves.

What for?:nono::nono:
I can't wait to adopt my daughter.. and hook up her hair up for the rest of her life!!!!

My mother and 2/3 aunts (the third is transitioning) and my grandmother are all natural. Lots of cousins are natural too, just too many to catalog.

My Mom and one of my aunts has locs (b/w BSL and MBL). Another aunt is natural but wears wigs 98% of the time. DD and I are natural. That's about it.

Most of the older women in my family are natural but not really by choice, more like illness or hair loss forced them into it so they wear wigs or try to make do. Basically they don't' have knowledge to make the most of their natural hair.

Many of the younger women are also natural but wear weave/braids/wigs most of the time. A few of them are improving their techniques over time and are wearing their natural hair "out" more and more, seems like the TWA grow-out process is problematic for non-hairboard/blog people. I'm known as the hair person in my family but I don't push advice on people unless they express interest. I would love to see the women in my family have awesome hair though but I don't want to be annoying..

When I was natural I was kind of a pioneer in my family but no one was all that interested.. now that I'm relaxed they all wanna be natural :giggle: But interestingly enough now that they see my relaxed hair looking nice they think my advice can be trusted

All of the women in my family are natural. It's something anyone thinks or talks about really. They just don't use relaxers.

BTW OP natural hair is much easier to deal with imo. I got a relaxer in h.s. (apl-bsl) and I got one in college (pixie cut) so I think I can speak with some authority :)
If you are a low maintenance girl like me natural hair will be a dream come true.

@CrissieD This wasn't the case for me, I think if I was able to wash & go (and it looked cute) that may have made a huge difference..

I couldn't guarantee natural will be easier for everyone, I feel like when it comes to black hair every hair state has its pros and cons and much of it depends on a person's preferred style and how easy it is to wear it that way on a regular basis.

My sisters and I are newly (< 3 years) natural. My mom refuses to conform. Everyone else in my family...grandma, cousins, 2nd cousins, aunts...are relaxed except for a 2nd cousin with knee length dreadlocks. I'm told she always buns her hair.

My brother is natural as well and a mix of dread locks and loose hair but I won't get into that... :look:

Raspberry I guess it does depend on how you prefer to wear your hair. I don't wear my hair straight anyway so for me natural hair is MUCH easier than relaxed hair.

My family was addicted to relaxers for a long time. My grandma is natural now by force. Her hair is so soft and fine, I have no idea why she ever relaxed. She's surely a 3a and always has been. Mom is loc'd. All cousins and my sister are relaxed but one.

Of the women in my close family circle (mother, grandmother, aunts, cousins), all but three are either natural or transitioning. In the super-extended family (great aunts, second cousins, etc), all but two are natural or transitioning (they're mother and daughter). I absolutely love it!

I didn't straighten my hair once the whole time I was natural, I was anti-heat. The thing that got to me was how labor intensive switching between styles and wash days were. So for me relaxed hair allows me to lazier because I don't have to do as much to switch between styles and wash days aren't as labor intensive... I don't use heat on my relaxed hair either.

My mom and my sister went natural a week and two weeks after I did! It's great having them natural because we can share tips and products. Also I have two natural aunts and my grandmother (but grandma fries n dyes her hair)

Different strokes I guess. I don't really do any styles just wash and go or buns so that might be why I think its easier. Also I co-wash every day or 2 and I live in Florida so leaving the house w/ wet hair is never much of a concern for me...

But back to the lecture @ hand
FH's family can count as my family too I guess and the ones I have met are all naturals. His mom and sis have locs and his aunt and female cousins that I have met are wash and goers.

My 16yo DD is nautral. I love her hair :) I'm relaxed but it sure makes me want to also go nautral. She does some flyy styles! :yep:

My brother and I are the first natural ones. He started many years ago (yes, he was texlaxed when he was a child) and his midback shiny and strong dreadlocs just 200% convinced me.

I went natural many years after him without having a clue about what to do.

My texturized and flatironed Mom is getting very curious, she is not natural but she is starting to prefer natural products and she wants to grow her hair past neck length (unfortunately it has never happened because of a crazy hair stylist and daily heat), so I am trying to understand the right regimen for her.

I have a 17 year old cousin who has always been natural and I believe her mother (my aunt) is natural too, she just wears fake hair a lot. I have another cousin who has dreadlocks, and I have twin cousins who just recently went natural. And my sister hasn't relaxed her hair in about a year. She's not sure if she's going to chop it off, transition longer, or relax again.
