My Stylist Cut My Hair Without Me Knowing!

as crazy as that sounds it happened this morning! he kept telling me that my ends are straggly and that my hair is breaking off mid-strand (where my ponytail holder would hold my hair back.) i protested and told him specifically not to cut my hair - that i have specific things i'm trying to do with my hair. he went onto say that typical stylist rant "hair needs to be cut in order to grow healthy and look good. your ends look a mess." i still said "NO," he styles you with your back to the mirror and his tools. i noticed he was sneaking around with something - and then saw him put scissors back into his drawer. as soon as i could look to the floor, i saw at least an inch of what had to be my hair on the ground! i don't believe the lack of integrity! so be careful!! when i confronted him about it, he said, your hair needed to be trimmed and went onto say he never takes off a lot of hair! we need to hold these stylists to higher levels of customer satisfaction and integrity.

i'm also convinced some black stylists do not know what black hair looks like in its natural state. (there was a relaxed woman getting her hair blown out and her ends looked the same as mine - he never called her ends dry, snaggly or damaged.) they are so used to doing and seeing relaxed or weaved hair. (he even said that some of our longered haired LHCF sisters probably have a few wefts sewn in!!!)

end of rant - i'm still about the same length i was in October!!! and its not just from this one inch trim! maybe i'm terminal length? maybe what i'm doing just isn't working or isn't worth it? or maybe i'm just ticked off right now! what a horrible start to the morning!

I am so sorry this happened to you. What a jerk! I could just smack him all upside his head. Are you going to find another stylist? I wish I could say I was shocked but I've had similiar things done to me in the past. The fact that you were so insistent and he still did it anyway was straight up disrespectful. If I were you I would be really pissed too.

I hope you don't go back and I hope to heavens you didn't pay him! :angeldevil:

I agree! How could he do that?!?! LAWSUIT!!! Well, maybe not all that, lol, but how does a stylist have the NERVE to do something to YOUR hair you specifically told him not to!!! Urrrrgh, I'm so mad right now for you!

That type of behaviour is disgusting, it's like I always say, them stylists dont care about your hair they just see you as a walking billboard, they don't care if the billboards hair is long or short cos they cut it all off. There would have been a scene up in there if that was me, I think he's behaviour is unforgivable. My stylist was constantly cutting my hair becuase the ends "were thin" and "it needed cuting" and I would let her because it did look fresh and even but now I think it's all nonsense, he should have respected your decision and left it alone!

Is it common for stylists to do hair facing away from the mirror?

Wow. Stylists never cease to amaze me with their unprofessional conduct.

I agree with SG; I hope you didn't pay him. You've learned a valuable lesson about not letting stylists work with your back to a mirror...I DEMAND that I be able to see everything that's happening...if they can't comply, I get up and leave.

Sorry you had to deal with this jerk...but now you've got some motivation to stay on top of things and regain that length.

I would have acted a fool. I would have threatened to call the state health board on him and threatened his license. How awful! What a violation personally for you and professionally for him. I am angry just reading about it.

i feel like an idiot about it...and yes, i did pay him! that's another long story. what makes me even more mad is that he kept stating that my hair is in bad shape. i don't think its in bad condition and i don't see how it could be when all i do is rinse, condition and put it in a ponytail. but he swore the ends were straggly. that really put me in a bad mood. then, when i got home and measured my hair and its the same length it was in september, that really ticked me off.

i'm going to focus on be grateful for having long, healthy hair. i realize that's a blessing. but its really frustrating when you're doing everything right and your hair is still the same length. how long does this BSL stall last? or have i reached terminal length? :(

You were violated!  I may be sounding too extreme, but this is tantamount to rape! You specifically told him not to and he did anyway. I wouldn't have paid that b@stard a dime. It was hair rape.

hair rape - funny/interesting choice of words, but that's a very good point!! its very true!

why do stylists think that we don't have the right to make decisions for our own hair and that they always know what's best for it? you know, even if i were dead wrong, then maybe you'll just have to let me be wrong.

How could it be at terminal length when he just cut some off today? Maybe I dont understand.

 I feel your pain, this happened to me 2x so don't feel bad it's easy for them to hustle you and make you believe their lies. :whyme:
The BSL stall is a couple of months but if you keep going to stylists like him it will be years even. :wallbash: learn how to do your hair @ home, get a CHI or Maxiglide for straight looks, wear buns, ponytails or phony-tails, learn how to do dusting trims yourself, believe me you will save money and frustration, and avoid getting locked up for the weekend cause you beat a stylist down :fishslap: :hammer: -j/k-just stay away from those stylists period.
The only women saw going to the stylists with BSL or longer hair only came in for the occasional up-do, (didn't matter hairtype straight or curly whatever) they didn't let the stylist do anything to their hair but put it up, it was already ready to go. then they paid and left, the stylists would say she used to be a client.

I am always leery of stylists taking too much off. He went beyond that by cutting without your permission. I would flat iron my own hair if I wasn't afraid of burning my hair out.

CHI or Maxiglide, self trim

I am so sorry this happened to you. This is the reason I stopped going to stylist, I got tired of having a person who had no idea how natural hair looked or acted do what he or she wanted to do with my hair rather than listen to me tell them how my hair responds.

I totally agree with Lucia's statement, especially the bolded parts! Not going to stylist has been the best thing I have ever done for my hair. I think if I lived in NY I might try one of those curly salons like Curves, but for the most part stylist=BAD, especially for those of us who are natural:mad:

He didn't respect your "no" and that's totally disrespectful (I started a thread about that today on the OT forum). You could always file a BBB claim about his practices for future clients. I'm sorry this happened to you.

I might try this. I did read a post on here about someone burning their hair flatironing it at home. I have to think it over. I am curious though.
If you buy one, get one with a heat dial setting test the setting that's right for you so the heat will stay even while you are using it, also the maxiglide has steam to help straighten w less heat and damage.

I feel your pain because I have been there - it is SO frustrating!!! The sad part for me is that I know the usual talk, "you need a trim," and I always fall for it. My hair has been at the same length FOREVER!!! because everytime it grows (and it grows really slowly), a hairdresser will convince me it is breaking and needs to be trimmed and I give in. Typical example, I do my hair at home but yesterday, I allowed a hairdresser to come to my home and blow it out because my friend told me he was good but cheap. After the blow out, he scornfully told me that my ends were SO bad (I didn't believe him) but he made me feel so uncomfortable - like I am holding on to something bad in the disguise of length - I couldn't handle it so I told him to go ahead and trim. He trimmed 2". Now, it takes me 6 months or more to grow 2" so right now, I have simply given up on this long hair quest. I will do everything I can to maintain healthy hair but I am giving up this quest for long hair - it is way too disappointing and frustrating to deal with. Some people are lucky to have fast growing hair and the ability to maintain great ends which result in long beautiful hair but for some reason, I think I put in the work but I am not sure I see the reward...., oh well. Just wanted to let you know I go through the same feeling as you.
