My Relaxer/ Rollerset Experience!Chi-Town! LONGGG

It was such a wonderful experience I couldnt wait to get home to brag to my LHCF GIRLS!!!

This past weekend I went to Chicago for some dance studio classes and to visit with my boyfriend and family.

On Satuday I wrapped up my hair and took some all out sweat to your neck dance classes. Silly me, I didnt wait till my hair was dry before taking my scarf off and my hair swelled to an embarrasing BUSH

Well I ran out the dance building to my car to decide what I was going to do with my hair. I planned to be in Chicago 2 more days and there was no way that I could go around looking like a FARINA (as my mother says-I have no idea what that means. Plus I had been achieving a ridiculous amount of new growth at least two inches and there was no way that I could self tame my hair without all the right products and utensils (rollers and hooded dryer). Plus it was time for a touch up.
So I frantically called my aunt for suggestions and she mentioned all these expensive downtown hairstylist that could probably see me for $50 roller set. I was like no way! All those who know me on this board and friends/family know I love me some costcutter for their trims and $14 rollerset/wraps. SO there is no way Im going to pay $50 for the same thing in downtown Chi-town.

So anyways as I'm on the phone Im driving through UIC campus through UNiversity Village and I see this really nice salon with black folks inside. There was a sign outside that siad %20 for students. I had a old student ID somewhere in my purse so maybe I could go in and see what they are all about.
So I parked my car and walked up to the door and saw that the name of the place is FANTASTIC SAMS which is one of those hair cutting franchise. Ofcourse this is perfect for me because I love me some COSTCUTTERS!!!!

The salon looked very nice and clean and there was very friendly middle aged black receptionist who asked me if she could help me. I told her I was interested in a relaxer and rollerset, rollerset mainly. She told me that a relaxer and rollerset is $50 which is pretty good. I then asked them what kind of relaxer do they use and she replied 'Mizani'. "YES!" I then asked if they have mild. She says they dont come in mild just coarse, medium and fine. I just knew she was going to tell me I needed coarse since my hair was no a large GOODTIMES looking 'fro. But she surprisingly said "THe 'Fine" mizani would work well for you." I agreed and met the stylist who would do my hair. She was very friendly and was unintimidated by my questions that would soon follow. She was so accomadating it was ridiculous. Most stylist hate for you to tell them what you do at home to your hair because they think they know whats good for you hair even though they dont know you!! I hate that

She was the exact opposite! I asked her what setting products do you use. She responded, " I only use KERACARE products." Double YES YES!! She asked what did I use. I appreciated that cause most stylist dont give a damm.
I said i usually use just setting lotion. She them said something that surprised me " Well if you just want to use water Ill do whatever you feel comfortable with." I was like awwww.....

I think you're the stylist sent from above

I said " well you can use the leave in but if you could put the setting lotion in a spray bottle and dilute it that would be great because I hate my rollersets to be hard and crispy!" she said "sure!"

She based my hair with the mizani shyne sheen spray and began relaxing my hair. She asked me every five minutes if my scalp burned. I told her most of the time no. she said she kept on asking me if it burned because she remembered that I just came back from dancing and when your scalp sweats it opens up your pores. I didnt know that! GOOD TO KNOW!

She rinsed my hair and conditioned it. She got me over to the chair and guess what???????

She detangled my hair hair with the JILBERE SHOWER COMB!!! I almost cried

This is what I felp like doing

In a very client/patron sort of way!

She rollerset my hair ever so gently on my roller size of choice, say me under the dryer for about an hour. She checked on me often. She took me from under the dryer after an hour. It usually takes me about 1.5 hours at the other salon. She could tell that I thought it was too soon. As she checked the hair for dampness she took down a few rollers and said "Yep youre dry. Here feel the end!" I was so appreciative of her kindess. She wrapped my hair so nicely and pinned it.

I wore my scarf out and got back to my boyfriends house and my hair was so pretty and moisturized and silky like never before. I think I love my stylist for once in my life!!!!

It so refreshing to meet a great stylist who doesnt charge you an arm and leg at friend BLACK salon where everybody isnt all loud and 'hood!! I cant wait to go back!!!!!!!!

Wow, I didn't know you could get service like that in Chicago. Sounds like you had a great experience.

What street was it on exactly? My sister's been looking for a different place to go to, she's on the south side. She's kinda gettin sick of the "extra urban" salon and she can't afford the others (yet).

I hate the 'hood salons in Chicago! I had the best experience ever. It was a wonderful experience that I cant wait to recommend. I wouldnt go to just anyone there. The lady I went to was fantastic and unfortunately I cant say that about every one there.

It was located on 17th and Haltsed near UIC campus. It was called Fantastic Sams which is a franchise.

That's great that you had such a nice experience!! Good for you girl! What was the lady's name? That sounds very reasonable.. $50 for a rollerset and a relaxer.. do you know how much just a relaxer is?

Ill PM you ladies name and the business card information that she gave me. The relaxer comes with a style of choice so whether its a blow dry or rollerset it is included in the $50 price.

If you just want a rollerset, the price she quoted me is $28. She seem to just pull that number out the air though. That price is still good to me for Chitown prices.

Cool! I've never had a rollerset or anything like that..but, I would love for someone else to relax my hair just to see what it's like.. I always think someone else can do a better job at that than I can.. I know most people think they, themselves, do a better job..but I would like something to compare it to..kwim? That price sounds good to me.. I pay $50 just for a blowdry and style..

I use to pay $45-50 for my blowdry and curl at the Egyptian salons. That blowdryer just dried the mess out of my poor hair!

The rollerset taked some getting used to. Alot of the time you wont walk out the salon with the finished look
because I like my curls to fall after its wrapped instead of after a blowdry following the set. However, you could probably ask her to blowdry youre roots after your rollerset. She is very patient and understanding. Hopefully your experience will be as good as mine!

I think $28 is much more worth it since your hair will come out in better condition to say the least!

$28 isn't bad at all.. but my hair is too short to put rollers in.. I just got it chopped off a month ago.. from grazing my shoulders to the middle of my neck.. I wanted to start all over. Blowdrying doesn't seem to damaging to my hair.. as far as I know..lol When I was in college, I washed, blowdryed and curled my hair every single day and it was about the length yours is in your most recent pictures.. I totally abused my hair back then and that was the longest it ever was...lol go figure.. I would try a rollerset when my hair gets longer..it's just too short now..

Oh Okay! I did that in college to and I think my hair grew! I dont know what I was on back then! I just had to cut it my JR year of college cause that was the "in " thing to have that swinging bob when you were dancing!
Those were the days!

Yep..those were the days! My hair grew alot back in the day..during that time I got it cut really short.. like REALLY short where it was SHAVED in the back.. I won't even said what my mom said I looked like..
lachen70.gif
but she's a snob so I ignored what she said anyway..lol and then my hair grew right back to where it was before.. Having kids ruined my hair..lol

Thanks Chaya. I'm in the Chi too and I'm always on the search for a new salon. As a matter of fact, I think I'm going in for a touch-up today. I probably will just go with my standby (also one of the Egyptian salons)because it's so last minute. I already know I'm coming out of my pocket at least $90.00 (touchup, deep condtioner, and clear cellophane). I definitely will you keep your little find in mind for future referene.

Hey Chaya

Can you PM me too! I'm interested in checking this stylist out. I'm hoping she can do rollersets on natural hair.

Just so that you know,
you dont need a prior appt. I just walked in and lucked out with a great stylist. Now mind you I dont know about the other stylist but the one I went to was the best. If you need her name just let me know!

Who would have ever thought you would find such good service on a random walk in?

[/ QUOTE ]

I definitely lucked out!! I could have risked going bald headed by going with such a random person. I just knew I didnt want someone blowdrying my hair and I needed a salon that would understand those concerns. Sometimes when I go to the Egyptians they kind of rush you and charge you more if you want a rollerset instead of a blowdry. African American hair isnt as resilient as their straight hair plus I have a relaxer so heat on top of a relaxer is really pushing it and I cant stand for my hair to feel dry. I am truly blessed!

Re: My Relaxer/ Rollerset Experience!Chi-Town! LON

Chaya, would you PM me the stylist info. I normally would have avoided a place like Fantastic Sams. Do you think they handle natural hair?

Re: My Relaxer/ Rollerset Experience!Chi-Town! LON

I sure can!
I have no idea about the whole natural hair thing since my hair is relaxed. However, I noticed that she is very patient and careful while manipulating my hair. I did not feel that she was pulling or jerking my hair. She used the Jilbere shower comb to detangle my hair not those fine toothed combs that I absolutely hate!!
You may want to call and speak with the stylist. I wouldnt go to just anybody in there. The woman who was doing this lady's hair next to me JACKED up on her hair cut and cut off WAYYYY to much hair. Plus when she was done flat ironing her hair, her hair was EXTRA DRY looking.
Go to the girl I went to Ill give you all that information in the PM!
