It was such a wonderful experience I couldnt wait to get home to brag to my LHCF GIRLS!!!
This past weekend I went to Chicago for some dance studio classes and to visit with my boyfriend and family.
On Satuday I wrapped up my hair and took some all out sweat to your neck dance classes. Silly me, I didnt wait till my hair was dry before taking my scarf off and my hair swelled to an embarrasing BUSH
Well I ran out the dance building to my car to decide what I was going to do with my hair. I planned to be in Chicago 2 more days and there was no way that I could go around looking like a FARINA (as my mother says-I have no idea what that means. Plus I had been achieving a ridiculous amount of new growth at least two inches and there was no way that I could self tame my hair without all the right products and utensils (rollers and hooded dryer). Plus it was time for a touch up.
So I frantically called my aunt for suggestions and she mentioned all these expensive downtown hairstylist that could probably see me for $50 roller set. I was like no way! All those who know me on this board and friends/family know I love me some costcutter for their trims and $14 rollerset/wraps. SO there is no way Im going to pay $50 for the same thing in downtown Chi-town.
So anyways as I'm on the phone Im driving through UIC campus through UNiversity Village and I see this really nice salon with black folks inside. There was a sign outside that siad %20 for students. I had a old student ID somewhere in my purse so maybe I could go in and see what they are all about.
So I parked my car and walked up to the door and saw that the name of the place is FANTASTIC SAMS which is one of those hair cutting franchise. Ofcourse this is perfect for me because I love me some COSTCUTTERS!!!!
The salon looked very nice and clean and there was very friendly middle aged black receptionist who asked me if she could help me. I told her I was interested in a relaxer and rollerset, rollerset mainly. She told me that a relaxer and rollerset is $50 which is pretty good. I then asked them what kind of relaxer do they use and she replied 'Mizani'. "YES!" I then asked if they have mild. She says they dont come in mild just coarse, medium and fine. I just knew she was going to tell me I needed coarse since my hair was no a large GOODTIMES looking 'fro. But she surprisingly said "THe 'Fine" mizani would work well for you." I agreed and met the stylist who would do my hair. She was very friendly and was unintimidated by my questions that would soon follow. She was so accomadating it was ridiculous. Most stylist hate for you to tell them what you do at home to your hair because they think they know whats good for you hair even though they dont know you!! I hate that
She was the exact opposite! I asked her what setting products do you use. She responded, " I only use KERACARE products." Double YES YES!! She asked what did I use. I appreciated that cause most stylist dont give a damm.
I said i usually use just setting lotion. She them said something that surprised me " Well if you just want to use water Ill do whatever you feel comfortable with." I was like awwww.....
I think you're the stylist sent from above
I said " well you can use the leave in but if you could put the setting lotion in a spray bottle and dilute it that would be great because I hate my rollersets to be hard and crispy!" she said "sure!"
She based my hair with the mizani shyne sheen spray and began relaxing my hair. She asked me every five minutes if my scalp burned. I told her most of the time no. she said she kept on asking me if it burned because she remembered that I just came back from dancing and when your scalp sweats it opens up your pores. I didnt know that! GOOD TO KNOW!
She rinsed my hair and conditioned it. She got me over to the chair and guess what???????
She detangled my hair hair with the JILBERE SHOWER COMB!!! I almost cried
This is what I felp like doing
In a very client/patron sort of way!
She rollerset my hair ever so gently on my roller size of choice, say me under the dryer for about an hour. She checked on me often. She took me from under the dryer after an hour. It usually takes me about 1.5 hours at the other salon. She could tell that I thought it was too soon. As she checked the hair for dampness she took down a few rollers and said "Yep youre dry. Here feel the end!" I was so appreciative of her kindess. She wrapped my hair so nicely and pinned it.
I wore my scarf out and got back to my boyfriends house and my hair was so pretty and moisturized and silky like never before. I think I love my stylist for once in my life!!!!
It so refreshing to meet a great stylist who doesnt charge you an arm and leg at friend BLACK salon where everybody isnt all loud and 'hood!! I cant wait to go back!!!!!!!!
