Is this too much in one setting: Relaxer + Rollerset + Blow Dry + Flat Iron?

I've been pondering this for a while now and decided to post to see what others opinions were on this.

I was referred to a stylist by a coworker who states this particular stylist is really into growing, taking care of & maintaining long healthy hair.

So I decided to book an appointment to see what she's all about. My first appointment went well. I got a simple wash with blow dry and flat iron. My relaxer would be do soon so I went ahead and booked my relaxer appointment that day.

I dont like to use alot of heat on my hair so I asked her when I come in for a relaxer in 3 weeks could she just rollerset my hair and maybe a doobie, since I already had too much heat for this session.

She stated that she would not recommend a rollerset because it will not last but for a day or two and stated that heat is not bad if you do it every two weeks instead of everyday and deep condition before using heat.

RELAXER DAY: I got my Relaxer and set under the dryer with a deep conditioner. Right after that she Rollerset my hair and I set under the dryer for an hour. Right after that she did a Blow Dry on my hair and I could see the heat/smoke coming from the blow dryer. She went from root to my ends. Right after my hair was bone straight she Flat Ironed my hair.

After all this heat I asked her if I continue to come to her if this will be the normal regimen. I asked if I would always have to have Heat and never be able to get a simple rollerset?? She reiterated to me that Heat is not bad and she'd prefer me continue to do this instead of rollerset.... just make sure we deep condition every visit. She said If I'm coming every 2 weeks I will still grow healthy long hair.

Do you guys agree with this? Did I really need all this heat if she just gave me a relaxer? Do you think this is excessive heat to be used every 2 weeks or is it only bad when its used daily??

I like the way my hair turned out but dont want to experience damage in the long run for something I was already leary about...

Thanks

Yes that is to much in my opinion. You could have definitely just done the relaxer and rollerset and maybe flatiron the roots.

If you hair was already bone straight with the blowdryer there was no need for the flatiron. That is way too much heat.

do you do protein treatments?

Yeah in my opinion that's wayyyy too much heat. At the MOST I could see her quickly blowdrying the roots to get it straight before flatironing but even then that's something that could be accomplished with a good rollerset. Sounds to me like someone is just lazy. :ohwell:

If you just got a relaxer your hair was already recovring fro
o e chemical trauma so heat on top is overkill in my mind. What concerns me here is not only the heat but the fact that she is not listening to your concerns or what you Wang as a customer.

I'm not understanding the point of doing all that on one person's head in one appointment. Sitting under the dryer for 1 hour and then blow drying? A rollerset and then flat ironing? ???

Yep; way too much heat. The only time I blowdry and flatiron the same day is when I am applying a BKT. Otherwise I airdry to at least 80% then blowdry on warm, but of course, I do my own hair. As so many people have mentioned here, most stylists are more interested in maintaining the appearance of the hair and less concerned with the damage they might be doing to your hair. I know they're not all like that, but these days I don't trust anyone but me with my hair.

There are a few relaxer camps and one includes those that use a relaxer chemically the same as a keratin treatment is used today. The understanding is that the bonds are not set right after a relaxer - the use of the flatiron and no washing for approx 3 days thereafter help to set the bonds. (Think underprocessed hair here)

Blowing the hair with a roundbrush would simply be used as a means to smooth and give body to the hair - but in this procedure it is certainly unnecessary.

Skip the blow and just go for the flatiron or just a roller wrap.

I think she could've skipped either the rollerset or the blow dryer. Why do both?

Yeah, I do think that was a bit much BUT I think it also depends on your hair type. Maybe she thought that your hair could stand to use heat every two weeks like that. For me personally, I would not use that much heat on my head:perplexed

In my opinion that was waaay too much heat for one session. I only wear my hair in doobies after my relaxer and my stylist relaxes my hair>DC>rollerset. No other heat is EVER applied to my hair. There shouldn't be a need to blow dry and then flat iron after a relaxer.

Either blow dry or flat iron, I don't see why both would be used after a rolerset, whatever the lady's hair type.

Yes I agree with everyone above that's too much heat and way too much manipulation. Why didn't she ask you what look you wanted if you wanted more body then go for the rollerset, if you want a pin str8 look then skip the rollerst and go for the flat iron.

She reiterated to me that Heat is not bad and she'd prefer me continue to do this instead of rollerset.... just make sure we deep condition every visit. She said If I'm coming every 2 weeks I will still grow healthy long hair.

Does she charge extra for all these steps? and the DC? sounds like somebody wants that cashflow...smh.

Sounds like a Dominican blowout. That's the method they use.

The Dominican salons that I've gone to does not flat iron the hair. They only use the blowtorch:look: oh I mean blowdryer. It's straight and swinging after that. But yes maam that is entirely too much heat. A doobie wrap would have done the trick.

that was way too much heat.. you dont need the blow dryer and the flat iron... Did she use any type of heat protectant at least?

THANKS LADIES!! You ALL confirmed exactly what I thought, I just wanted to get 2nd opinions. I think I'm going to just look for another stylist or continue to do my own hair until I find someone who is able to adhere to my needs/requests without any debate.

do you do protein treatments?

Yes, I do protein treatments every few weeks. I did one the week following my appointment because of all the heat that was used on my hair in that one setting. I followed up with a deep moisturizing treatment.

Did she use any type of heat protectant at least?

You know what? I'm not even sure if she used a heat protectant or not. I know she put some type of leave in conditioner in but I'm not sure if that included a heat protectant:perplexed
