MY HAIR WON'T GROW!!!!

Hey everyone. I have always, my entire life, had the same length hair. It's between bra strap and arm pit. I've cut it off before and it ALWAYS grows back to that length and just...stops!!! I don't understand why this is. When i cut it, it grows super fast, but then once it gets to it's usual length, it barely grows. Does this seem to be happening to anyone else?! Does anyone have any solutions? I've been trying alot of things suggested on the board and it seems to be contributing to the thickness, but not the length:(

I have the exact same problem, I was thinking about posting it, but then decided not to since I thought no one would uderstand. My hair will grow really fast till my neck or sometimes reach my shoulders, but NEVER any longer. I just don't understand why. I thought I wouldn't have the same problem now since I'm now following all the steps I've learned here on LHCF. But apparently, it's kinda happening again. I've now reached about 8 inches of length in the front (different lengths in my hair is another problem I'm dealing with), my nape is always shorter anyway and for the past month it's just the same, not even an inch of length. I was thinkin': maybe it's due to product build-up, I haven't used any clarifyng shampoo yet, maybe I should try it, see what happens.

gentics play a major role about hair length and I believe thats what has happen
And is it possible that it's different even if you're related to each other? My sister for instance doesn't have the same prob. Of course she has a different method and regimen than me, she braids her hair up all the time, I don't. I wear (flat) twists all the time. But even when I used to braid my hair, it wasn't any different...so bizar :s

I'm gonna guess that this is highly dependent upon your regimen, before I say you've reached a terminal length.

(Patiently waiting to hear your regimen ;) ),

9 times out of 10, if you've been doing the same things with your hair over the years and this does NOT include protective styling, reduced heat, or moisturizing, any of those may be a reason why you've remained at the same length.

Just my two cents.

My best friend's hair has been short all of her life. Her mother and grandmother have short hair too. Her hair would not grow past the nape of her neck + it was damaged. 4 yrs ago she put in dreads and her hair. It has been slow growing but now it is APL length and very full. As for me, my hair seemed to grow a little past shoulder length then stop. Through trial and error and pregnancy it is APL length.

I think it is combination of genetics and regimen. I've been reading on this board some people grow quickly until APL length and takes a longer time to get to BSL. If you develop a regimen that works for you, stick with it and have patience, your hair will past that hurdle.

Could you give some tips on protective styling?

Mmm, protecive style is gernally the KEY to growing your hair out longer unless your hair was longer as a kid.. also somtimes even if that your sister or not your hair can slightly differnet like my sister hair she has brown hair and more 4a then me i BELIEVE her hair even grows faster then mine but she doesn't know how to take care of it...

whats your regimn?

I prepoo every week (sometimes I leave it overnight), I wash my hair every week aswell with a conditioning shampoo and I detangle my hair afterwards with a conditioner. I switch between air drying/hood drying and then oil my hair and do twists. I deep condition once a month with Ojon and I put leave-in conditioner in my hair (water based) every night before going to bed, I then tie my hair with a silk scarf. I untie my twists every morning (bad/good?) and redo them at night.

This is one of my biggest fears. For the past few years, I haven't been able to grow my hair past about the point it is now, and I'm so afraid that it's going to happen yet again. I'm hoping that protective styles will be the key. Do you wear your hair up or protected often?

My current length varies from 4 to 7 inches :( and indeed, I do need to do more protective styling, but my hair is not long enough for me to do a bun :s:s what would you suggest?

your hair is 3b? i WOULD suggest cornrows , but only if you have someone who can do them for you cheap(but well done and not to tight or not to lose) so you can get them redone on a regualr basics, because I wouldn't want you to mess up your edges if your hair is thin or more then likey to mess up your edges! Also I didn't see you say anything about protain treatments? and how oftan do your get relaxed?

Oh I don't relax my hair at all, I'm all natural, my last relaxer was october 2005. I want to start doing protein treatments aswell, but first I'd like to get more information about it, because I heard that too much protein can lead to breakage aswell. My hair has multiple personality so I've got like 3 to 4 different textures in it (the front and the nape are 3b and the rest is 4a). The ends however are very dry.

Depends on what type of protain treatment you want, I'd suggest you use a light protain treatment if you do it more often but if your doing Hardcore one you want to do it every 6-8 weeks I'm going to try see if I can pull up list of protain treaments

For Serious protein treatments
Emergencce or the Aphogee(You use these every 6-8 weeks)

Emergencee tips:

1. Apply it to freshly clarified hair
2. Allow to dry under soft bonnet/hood dryer until it hardens (won't get rock hard, but your hair will feel "crispy")
3. Rinse out gently with warm water
4. Shampoo
5. Deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner

This could help with breakages and help balance out the mositure

ALSO try braids or kornrows until you reach a long enough hair to put into a bun. I personly would suggest kornrows because It won't give you to much stress on your 3B hair which could possiably breaks from braids.

Also are you on any vitmans? deit or work out plan?

Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to look in on that. And no, I don't do any sports, we don't mix well. It's one of my new year resolutions though, there's a gym right around the corner from here. I read on another blog from a LHCF member that working out helps (her hair is passed APL).

YA IM A BUM.. hahaha... i grew up in sports
soccer/basketball/track/swiming and ballet untili was 12 now im in colllege and going back to playing soccer and running...

also switching up your diet plan and vitmans help you dont have to take a BOAT load but you can take a multi- vitman and a b50 and botion to help with growth

Sorry it took forever for my response, definitely got my car towed right after writing the post and had to leave ASAP. Anyways, right now my hair is in twist, trying the protective style method. I usually wash it poo once a week, condition, and deep condition and do a twist out. I use castor oil after i pre poo and braid my hair, in the morning it's moist, soft, and shiney. Um... use WGO, take biotin...just started the horsetail tea (crossing my fingers on that one), and for the last month i've had a strict high protein diet. I'm really praying i'm not stuck at this length because of genetics, i'll be so hurt:( ! With the twist i have quite a bit of new growth, but i usually do get that from protective styling. Surprisingly when i take my hair out of the stlye and get the relaxer, regardless my hair is STILL the same length...i don't understand. Thank for all your responses ladies, at least im not the only one experiencing this :ohwell:, thought i was just an odd ball!

I agree with OneInaMillion,

You should try protective style/baggie, no heat, extra, extra moisturizing, and possibly some vitamins and then take it from there:)

If it's any consolation, I was stuck at APL right up until last year despite daily moisturizing, regular deep condition and protein treatments, and no direct heat. Then I started wearing protective styles (buns) for weeks at a time; that helps enormously in retaining growth. Also decreasing the number of times I wash my hair to every two weeks further cuts down on manipulation. So now I'm past BSL at long last.

Scalp massages? I keep reading on here that these are really good for increasing circulation, but I still don't get how to do them without rubbing my hair, so I haven't done them.

Um, L-Cysteine? MSM? As you can see by looking at my signature, I take a lot of vitamins/supplements, so I'm just trying to think of what sparked growth for me...the L-Cysteine and the Biotin worked really well when I first learned about taking supplements for growth. The other things, I'm sure they worked too, but by that time, I had added a bunch of other stuff so who knows what did what. ;)

I forgot to ask how much water you're drinking and if you've thought about maybe trying carrot juice? There's a carrot juice thread around here somewhere I'll try and find to bump for you... Oh, and what about eggs? Eggs are good for you...

ITA. I have a hard time believing anybody healthy has a terminal length that short.
