My hair looks red. Should I worry?

Sorry if there is information about this. When I tried searching everything was about dye.

I just tried to take some pictures of my hair, and with the flash on there are definitely patches where my hair looks reddish, or a red brown. I have not dyed my hair or anything. Although I am not out in the sun every day, I am out for hours on the days that I am out. It feels moisturised and soft. I have slipped on wearing my sleeping cap at night, but for the most part, it IS worn.

Is this something I should worry about? It freaked me out! It looks normal without a flash. Is this a sign of something? If so, does this mean I need to start cutting it down/off, and what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future?

Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

My hair after being in the sun during the summer months turns a reddish & sandy brown. It could possibly be your natural highlights OR could be a reaction of products in hair to the sun exposure. It depends. Do you have a regi?

Maybe someone else can chime in...pics would help as well. I know I just posted on another thread and photo upload was not working so I had to link to pics from my Fotki.

yeah my hair looks reddish in the sun during the summer, indoors it looks normal. Also do u use no lye? It bleaches the hair. I also have read somewhere that hair that turns reddish in some parts could have porosity issues...maybe u should look it up :yep:

Yep I read too about the porosity issues causing color change. My issue was combatted with henna & indigo mix (at first) then I started using Roux PC conditioner. I maintained my HHH in between and recently for fun I tried a John Freida Glaze in Brilliant Brunette.

Are you natural or relaxed? I ask because relaxer not only straightens my hair, but it also lightens it.

Oops, I got confused with another poster and the OP :drunk:.
Disregard lol

Oh sorry guys! I am natural. I went natural and 2002 and have chopped my hair off a lot since then (because it was not until 2009 that I learned the ways I was damaging my hair).

I only started using Apple Cider Vinegar after I wash my hair a few weeks ago. I will continue to do that and find other ways to fight porosity issues. Thanks, ladies.

Hmmm....could it possibly be the Apple Cider Vinnegar? I know apple cider vinnegar is quite acidic. Not too far from lemon juice in ph levels, and I know that sometimes people use lemon juice to dye their hair to a lighter shade. :look: Something about the acid in lemon juice (or maybe even in ACV) takes away SOME of the melanin in the hair. Just a thought...

I had not thought of that, either. And of course when I googled all I see is that people use ACV to lighten their hair.  I am fine as long as it is not damaged...

Do you self relax?

I found this happened when my hair was self relaxed poorly. The hair was not only redder, but dryer and coarser, and just felt less healthy. Porosoity treatments and rinses/cellophanes have helped me, but there seems to be no solution growing out the hair/cutting it off when it happens to me.
