My deep conditioner landed me in the Urgent Care Center

Simplicity & Peacefulness
(I posted this in OT and it was suggested I post it here.)

I did a protein DC and landed in the Urgent Care Center at 7 am on a Saturday morning...See What Had Happened Was...

I was reading on here about protein treatments for natural hair and I came across several posts that basically said that naturals don't need a hard protein and they can get away with "just adding an egg" to their conditioner.

So, okay, I mix up my egg and conditioner and put it on my head with a plastic cap followed by a scarf followed by a winter hat and went to bed. It was runny all night and I kept wiping my face even as I slept. The next morning I washed it out...and washed my sheets!

Two days later my ears start aching but I kinda brushed it off because it was mild. Two days after that the pain "crunk" all the way up. The next night the pain was excruciating, like fire, my ear was tomato red and I could literally feel heat radiating off my face. I was in full blown infection! :burning::burning::burning::cry:

I looked up the earliest urgent care center and got there at 7 am. The doctor told me I had a really bad ear infection that would require both oral meds and ear drops. Then he said in a tone, "Do you have any idea what could have gotten in your ear?" I sheepishly told him about the egg and condtioner. He said, "That'll do it." And I swear he was looking at me like, "Black women..."

Neva eva again! And that cheap, homemade protein conditioner cost me over $100 in medical costs!

So for anybody considering doing any type of deep conditioner, I would suggest not sleeping in it overnight if possible and protect your ears from conditioner run-off.

@HappyAtLast

WOW! That is terrible.

I am glad you are okay and will be feeling better soon:kiss:.

That just sounds painful & dangerous.

I thought you were going to say something about Samonella poisoning from the eggs or something.

Thank you! I really think the egg made it worse because of its own bacteria!

I don't like overnight DC'ing because of sleeping with 'damp' hair (and rarely, if ever do it). :ohwell:

So, now I have another reason to stay away from overnight DC'ing.:perplexed

I hope you feel better and that's too bad about the $100 Urgent Care Bill.:nono:

You gotta be careful with raw eggs these days, they are not as clean as they used to be. Don't lick any bowls when you make cake either.

I feel for you, OP! I never tried the natural ingredients thing for my hair, but it sucks you had to go through that.

Be careful about the medication that they are giving you especially their side effects! Antibiotics can be the worse.

This must have been scary and painful. Glad it's being treated. Thanks for sharing so others can learn from this.

I don't know which situation is better or worse yours or another girl who posted on here that she put an egg mixture on her head, wore a heating cap and the egg cooked....

Sorry that happened to you...

No heat or overnight deep conditioning with eggs. At least the urgent care center could hook you up. They are expensive but it's great when you can't get to the emergency room.

Im afraid of overnight dcs all together. I had a bad experience with neutrogena triple moisture. No matter how tired I am I rinse it out before bed

Sorry you went through that!

I learned a long time ago that overnight DCing really isn't necessary. You probably would've been fine with the egg if you hadn't slept in it. But hey, we live and we learn, right? :yep:

Sorry that happened. I don't play around eggs. There's too much bacteria & there's too many good conditioners you can just buy from the store & use.

Wow! I'm sorry that happened. I DC overnight almost weekly, but I use thick DCs that stay on my hair only and I don't mess with raw eggs.

the worst thing that happened to me was putting tons of coconut oil in my hair,a plastic cap and satin scarf and waking up with 3 big dreads. it was the worst matting. but i wouldn't sleep with protein in my hair anyway

Oh no, sorry to hear that this happened to you! :nono:

I'm really wary about having to mix ingredients together, you never know how they can react or how they'll irritate the skin when they're combined. I'm glad that no further damage was done.

So happy you're okay. I always worry about shampoo and conditioner run off when I'm in the shower. I try to plug my ears but it always falls out. This sounds so scary!

Sorry to hear this!!! Glad you're okay!

Pleeease tell me that after all that... Your hair at LEAST emerged the most gorgeous it's ever been?!?!

I had to ask. ;)

Wow, I'm glad you're okay!

Please be extra vigilant over the next few months. My husband had an ear infection in December, and suddenly went totally deaf in one ear the next month. There's a good chance he'll never regain his hearing. Apparently this is fairly common after an ear infection. :ohwell: So get to a specialist right away if you notice anything funny with your ears in the next few months.

I was going to make the same suggestion. My sister is losing her hearing in one ear due to an ear infection. Be very careful and proactive about this. Definitely see a specialist! I'm so sorry that this happened to you.

I'm glad you are doing well OP. Last year I went to the ER due to a tea rinse. The excess of caffeine almost killed me. At least I thought I was dying. I had trouble breathing, irregular heartbeat and dizziness. I've been very cautious about what I use on my hair since.

I'm so sorry this happened!

I've never understood why we tout raw eggs so much :perplexed Aside from them carrying harmful bacteria, the protein molecules in eggs are unmodified and not that effective since they're too big to penetrate our strands. It would make better sense to just eat the egg. This also goes for yogurt, mayo, etc.

A better option we can buy at the supermarket is gelatin (hydrolized collagen). Or if one prefers a liquid option, products like this Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein are much safer and useful as these actually penetrate the strands and aren't just topical, and we can still adapt the amount to our own personal needs.

Hope you're feeling better!

Because I DC over night I make sure to clean my ears at least every 2-3 weeks with hydrogen Peroxide. I pour a capful in each ear and lay on my side for 10 minutes and let it fizz out anything that doesn't belong in there. Afterwards I use a q-tip and clean it out.
