Does your scalp itch so much that your co-workers are beginning to think you have lice?
Is the crown of your hair so coarse it breaks when you comb it?
Do you feel the need to get a touch up 3 weeks after your last application?
Is your jet black hair now red?
Does your hair just hang with no movement?

If you experience these symptoms you may be a victim of lye relaxers. Yes! After a year of figuring out what was wrong with my hair, I have finally concluded that lye relaxers are the culprit. My hair is MESSED UP! It could be worse but at this point my hair should've been past my bra strap and not stuck at my collar bone. I deep condition once a week and never use any heat. I wrap my hair at night and sleep with a silk scarf. But my hair looks terrible. When I was a teenager I could honestly never took care of my hair and it looked pretty decent (I reached bra strap) and I used a no lye relaxer because the Trinidadian woman told me it was good. (Always listen to the old school island folk!) Now I got caught up in the hype and used lye and my hair is miserable.

Also, I was reading a report in AMA (it is a highly reputable Medical journal) which said lye relaxers are extremely harmful to the condition of hair and scalp. I should've known.

Some of you use lye and it works great, but this message is for those of you doing your best to acheive beautiful healthy hair but cannot because of all the lyes.

I, myself, am beginning to take this matter very seriously. That's why I recently switched to PhytoRelaxer Index 2 which is totally lyeless. Sometimes my scalp itches so bad, it is ridiculous even though I was my hair every week. It could definitely be the lye in the relaxers......

Thank you for bringing up this subject........

Im sorry that happen to you, Thats why I stoped useing relaxers I wanted my hair to grow long but it never really did..
When I first got here, I couldnt understand why everyone elses hair would grow and mine wouldnt, I guess its b/c relaxers arent for my hair.. And I think I read somewhere that (I dont know if its true or not)people who use relaxers have a blue/green film on there brain. (Pls dont be offended about what I said its just something I heard)

Girl how long have you been using lye? Has it really been that bad? What is your hair type? Well I guess you answered my question about which is better lye or no lye. From your post I would say it's no lye. I heard no lye drys your hair I have experienced this with no lye I have to constantly keep my ends moisturized or they will literally break off. With the lye I experienced all the conditions you described above including alot of shedding,
frown.gif
with the no lye I have no shedding minimum scalp itching but breakage

so which is better that's it I'm getting a baldy....

I use no lye only because that's what I started out using. It is drying to the hair, however that is easily remedied by frequent washing and making sure the hair is always moisturized, especially the ends.

Yep.That's my story too.I have never been interested in lye relaxers. If it aint broke..

It's almost as if we cannot win if we want our hair to be straighter. The guadinine carbonate (which is not considered a lye)used in PhytoRelaxer Index 2 is a caustic chemical as well......

I have also noticed itching and burning post-relaxer...for few days after when ever my head rests against something like if I'm lying in bed and I lean back against the headboard or something...that spot will burn and feel irritated even if wrapped in a scarf. This sensation isn't isolated to one spot it can happen anywhere on my head. And my hair definitely has a reddish cast to it. I thought that was from overprocessing....you mean that overprocessed or not this is what is going to hapen if you use lye relaxers?

I hear you about the lye unfortunatly No-Lye is simply synthetic version of Lye! Example St. John's Wart is a herbal anti-depressant, but Zoloft is a synthetic. Lye, as bad as it can be, is considered a "natural" substance that is often used in "natural" soap. Laughable isn't it?!

Anyhow, I agree Lye can cause that type of damage and is nothing to play with. I was thinking about Phytospecific but I'm still unsure. Until then I will continue to use what be on the market for the last 100 years

no lye relaxers turned my hair redder and were extremely drying. They also made my head itch.

Lye is the base for all soap.

I DON'T suggest that you grow your hair using NO-LYE relaxers or wear extensions over your hair with a no-lye relaxer in. NO LYE relaxers are very drying and tangle excessively when shampooed. Abba Moisture Scentsation Conditioner and Pink Oil Moisturizer helps maintain hair with no-lye relaxers in. LYE relaxers perform better.

If you want to grow out your NO LYE relaxer and keep length, you must use braid extensions. Each time you take out the braid extensions (after two months) and have new growth, cut the NO LYE relaxed hair off a little at a time.

The reason you may have suffered from LYE relaxers is if you overprocessed your hair, kept it in too long, did not pay attention to strengths, or didnt perm ONLY NEW GROWTH. Do not relax all of your hair...just new growth...

I hope this message was insightful

Pink oil moisturizer is the worst stuff for hair on the earth. It is the only thing that will make hair greasy and hard all at the same time.
Deep condioning, being gentle, and taking it easy on the heat will help hair to growth whether you have lye or no lye.

I agree with you Poohbear...but SOME people's just doesn't do well with Lye, even if they take excellent care of their hair.

It is possible.

It penetrates your skull and gets to your brain?

I've never had excessive tangling with no lye, and pink oil does not like my hair. Everyone's hair is different. Isn't it Cathy Howse who grew her hair past bra-strap with no-lye?

MY REPLY:
I was just giving an example of a moisturizer, i know its not the best product in the world...also NO HEAT at all will help hair grow!

I just had a touch up done last week with beautiful results....with none of the symptons previously mentioned...and my hair is not flat...but is still thick and full of body. How long after using lye are these symptoms supposedly supposed to show up? What do all you other girls out there who use lye relaxers have to say about this....what is your experience and opinion on the "harms" of using lye relaxers?

Me too. I don't have tangling with no lye (never tried pink oil). Some people can successfully use no lye and grow their hair to whatever length they want.

Nothing

It's a site with thousands of posters, so they aren't all of the same opinions. BUT, note that Nappturality is an anti-relaxer site. If you want to make a claim about lye and you want people to be receptive to your info, you try and find "objective" and "unbiased" sources. It's like if I claimed that eating meat causes cancer, and I say that I heard it at www.peta.org, know what I mean?

absoulutely nothing. some can get preachy over there just like some can over here, but not the majority. i believe that some tend to get upset when they fail to read the first page and post about relaxers without such a welcome response.
