Absolutely understand! No pressure on the pix ((HUG)). I'm just happy anytime you give us a glimpse of your gorgeous mane.

Sounds like you may be a bit apprehensive about what you'll see with this check in. But I'm gonna call it for you! You're gonna see MORE progress, despite the neglect you feel you've given your hair.

You said you've stayed consistent with your protein and trims (even though this is the first trim of 2025, I believe) so I bet your hair will let you know that "it's all good" when you check in with her. Also, we're in this thread bc we KNOW that caring for our ends is crucial for retention. They're the oldest parts of our hair and you've been treating them very well by keeping them bound, baggied and detangled. They're gonna reward you by hanging on and helping you reach new goals. I'm sure of it!

Take your time. You've recently learned the trick for a healthier blowout for you. It's gonna turn out great! Enjoy your check in and I'm sure you'll give us an update - with or without pix! :D
How sweet of you! Thank you for the gentle encouragement and feather soft support. I appreciate it!

You hit the nail EXACTLY on the head. Yes, I'm apprehensive about what I might see.

But, I HAVE to take photos. Otherwise, it is like the blow out and trim never happened. I ENJOY sharing pictures, too!

Yes, you are right again that I recently learned the trick for my hair for a healthier and prettier blowout. It's weird how you can be doing a similar process for years, and then one shift happens and ba-da-BOOM! You have a paradigm shift and your world is ROCKED. Realizations, ahas, and epiphanies keep on rolling through my hair world large, fast and hard, -Wile E. Coyote style antics on steroids.

@Chicoro I’m so sorry that stress is getting to you. I hope that things settle down for you soon.

Time really flies. I would have sworn that you have been doing the balled up ends of your braid for a really long time now. I was surprised to read that you just started that last Sept.
Thank you! I re-started the process and have done it religiously since Sept 2024. You are right that I have been balling up the ends for years, but I have had lengthy intervals in my hair journey where I have not consistently balled the ends.

I resealed my ends with mango butter this evening. They were still soft and moisturised from wash day. I've kept my hair in a plaited bun since wash day, thanks to a silk scarf (managed to find one), I've not had to redo the plait. I've only wet, remoisurised and resealed the top this week. Very low manipulation.

@Chicoro When you say you rolled your ends, do you mean baggying? What are you using for that? I've previously managed to do this with cling film (saran wrap), and small, thin bands. The band would go around the film, but technically, that could rub against the rest of the plait that's wrapped into a bun. You mentioned a covered band or something?

I've managed to find some skinny silk hair bands for when I want to protect my future wash and goes and probably for general use as the so called snag proof bands always end up with strands of my hair around them.

If anything is not clear for you, let me know!

I think if you have enough hair bound, that protects against tearing out or breaking or snagging individual hairs and seeing them left in the band you used to hold your hair. This is why I love balling up my braids. The thickness and the heartiness of the braid, combined with putting the rubber band around it loosely and ensuring the rubber band is coated and my hair is well lubricated, better ASSURES my hair will not break or be damaged by the rubber band securing it.

This is my un-balled up braid. This hair breaks, tangles, snags etc. So, I grease up the end and ball up the braid and put a thin, coated rubber band around it to secure it. At night, I put on a plastic cap over my whole head WITH my hair already balled up. It is fast and protective and keeps my hair safe and moist at night - WHEN I do it consistently.

Hair Feb15th 2025 C.jpg

I buy bags of small rubber bands at the beauty supply. They look 'ashy' and dull. That is because the rubber bands are coated with something so they don't break the hair. They are just simple bands of rubber, nothing fancy! I attached a photo below for you.

I just take the ends of my braids and roll them up and then secure them with a rubber band. I have used the baggy method, which I love love. But now, at night I simply cover my entire head with a plastic shower cap so I am doing a whole head baggy AND along with my ends being rolled up! I have always employed rolled up ends in my process, especially at the beginning of my hair journey.

I stopped once because I was wearing a single pony tail braid. And my braid turned in on itself and knotted. How does hair do THAT?! It did. I lost 3 -5 inches on that freak, hair accident . I was devastated and stopped for a while. I took it as a sign that I needed to change up my process. :look: :giggle: This is a true story.

Thank you for explaining that :) Your hair is beautiful ❤️ I'm looking forward to having long plaits like that one day.... (soon, hopefully).

I think the last 2 pics look similar to what I was referring to except there'd be some plastic between the bands and the hair.

I love the baggy process too, I haven't done a whole head baggy in years! I often baggy my buns though. My hair responds so well to this process. My ends are doing well, but it would definitely be doing better if I baggy the end of my single plait.

I had forgotten so much stuff before revisiting my HHJ. Things like liking aloe vera and hemp seed butters because they were light and worked well for my hair. Or that I also loved papaya seed oil, but was trying to be disciplined so whittled it down to two butters and 2 oils. I'm definitely going to get some papaya oil, I'm happy to keep to my mango and avocado butters though.

I may very well start to baggy the end of my plait from this wash day. It's definitely something I would like to add to my regimen, I'm giving myself about 2 - 3 months to lock my regimen down. I'm revisiting products and practices that I haven't been doing for a long time, I want to make sure they still work for me, I also don't want to do too much too soon, just build it up slowly.

ETA: The rest of the last paragraph, seeing as I pressed post before I had finished.

Oooh! I'll admit, I haven't tried your recipe with the tofu, I just place them in my clay masks. I know he originally called for the fatty acids, but I did try it with BTMS, but I'm not sure it did anything more than what it is doing the way that I use it.

I might buy some tofu and try it your way, though. At least once. I guess, I'll just have to make sure it's blended REALLY well so that it doesn't get stuck in my hair. Do you think that the tofu alone creates a strengthening effect? I've tried using DIY Ethiopian whipped butter (essentially, whipped milk solids) and it was strengthening. As I type this I realize that one is milk and one is soy, but I'mma ask anyway.
Excuse for being late to get back to this.

I don't know if the tofu alone creates a strengthening effect. I believe the tofu is important because of the fatty acids which allow it to carry the amino acids into the hair and it allow the amino acids to penetrate into the hair.

This past Friday, I washed and microtrimmed my hair. My process was as follows:
-Prepoo w/ APB Hair oil, diluted Infusium 23, and Queen Helene Cholesterol.
-Clarified w/Kristin Ess followed up w/ Obia Moisturizing Shampoo
-I did a new thing by adding Henna to my Adwoa Baomint DC. It turned the moisturizing DC into a protein-like DC. My hair responded nicely to it. I followed up w/ APB Cholesterol.
-I used foam to place four Bantu knots and let my hair air dry to about 80% dry, then blowdried my hair. I did have some splits, which I believe were from my WNGs. After I got rid of the splits, my hair felt dry in some parts; so I slathered my ends in Shea butter, baggied my ends, and tied my hair up.

Overall, I’m happy with my progress, but I believe I can do better. I will keep my ends tucked for the rest of the year. I purchased some satin hair ties to make my buns. I will only blow dry my hair to trim and will mold my hair into a bun using foam.

I will come back and post pictures. My current photos look to grainy when miniaturized.

EDIT: I decided to post the pictures I have. They look grainy, but the growth is visible.
The first three photos are before I trimmed and the last photo is after.

Snitches MAY get Stiches, but they also get to see 'pitchas'

Ya'll, @keranikki up in here adding pictures AFTER the fact, to an old post in this thread. I JUST HAPPENED to be going back a post to answer @snoop when I came across her NEWLY posted HAIR photos in an OLD post PURELY by accident!!!!

She thinks she's slick...but up in THIS here thread, I be seeing and telling.

Everyone please go back to post #612 to see @keranikki and her lovely hair photos.
She says the photos are grainy.

In my opinion, the progress, health and beauty of
her hair jumps out the photos and overshadows any and all graininess that she says is present in the photos.

The photos are well worth the look. She is the one who inspired me to do regular micro-trims because
of her documented, impressive progress.

Go look, ya'll!

Could you post the photo that you showed us before of your hair before you started micro-trimming?

And then could you post right next to it, a photo of your hair that you just posted this week, the ones you in here calling grainy, to show the progress, please?
For me, that first photo and your progress ,right after it, were two things that helped the trajectory of my hair journey after 12 years of breakage.
In my SOUL, I believe it can help someone else, too.

No pressure, if you don't feel like doing it. I do and will understand. And will ask again in another post, at a later :giggle: date.

This is my scalp goal for this spring....

LOOK, what I found in my neck of the woods?!!!!

A Japanese head spa! In my little French town!

BUT, unlike you, I didn't see any black folks in the advertising.

I am feeling a lil' sensitive as of late, so...I may not go inquire right at this moment about if they do afro - textured hair or not.
I don't trust myself to REMAIN polite and civil.

I'd hate to be captured looking and acting like this in the front of the Japanese Head Spa here in town
because somebody said something I didn't like. Especially, as it relates to my afro-hair.

giphy.gif

My students told me about the service, two lovely blue-eyed blondes. AND, they were so sweet when
they said,

"Your hair may be more involved and may take more time to detangle. So, they may charge
you more, like a surcharge, just like they charge me more because my hair is longer."

Today was my first "aggressive" hair treatment with my dermatologist. Pre-visit prep required clean hair and STRAIGHT hair. I finally pulled out my brand new RevAir unit. I was able to blow my hair to a straightened state but not bone straight. The learning curve for the RevAir was fairly easy.

Visit 1 - First session of Fontana laser and microneedling (0.7) with Toskani growth factors mixed with Hair Cell PR & Lumicen Therapy.

She started with the Fontana laser which feels like a cross between a high frequency wand on HIGH with a dash of heat. It felt uncomfortable but bearable. This was completed on my full scalp and along my edges.

Next she followed up with 0.7mm depth microneedling pen and growth cocktail listed above. This depth was deep enough to encourage the cocktail to penetrate without being so deep that I have blood droplets. It feels mildly uncomfortable but numbing cream wasn't necessary.

My post procedure plan is to protect my scalp for the next 5 days. I can use my red light cap only but no other things like scalp massages or minoxidil until next Monday.

I go back in three weeks. The next visit will include PRP injections.

As a mental treat before my possibly painful next session with dermatologist, I took your advice and scheduled a visit. I go next month so will have something to report.

But I'm happy you have a possible option to try as well. I'm hoping you get a chance to go.

Sounds intense. It is great to have options for treatments. How are you protecting your scalp? Are you letting it rest? Or, are you doing something proactively? If so, what are you doing?

Are there any take home treatments?

Did the dermatologist provide a timeline of what to expect? For example, in 4 weeks , the scalp may start to shed…In 2 months crown will have 1/16 inch of new growth.

Are you also documenting the journey with photos and written information to track for yourself? It sounds like an adventure. And you’ve lovingly ensured for yourself that you are in good, capable hands by doing your due diligence to find your current dermatologist.

Keep us posted on your progress. We are off to a great start. That ‘we’ is intentionally written because I’m nosy and as long as can, I’m going to be all up in your ‘hair’ business, especially your dermatologist journey.

We are more than 1/2 way through the month! That means, make sure to gather up and keep your hair updates close. You want to be ready with your notes, if it’s your desire to share, all those fabulous interesting tidbits in your hair update at the end of April!

The post procedure notes are long - no scalp massaging, sweating or shampoo for at least three days. No topical ointment or creams either. So I'm officially on a break from massages and minoxidil until Monday with red light therapy as my only at home treatment until next week.

I forgot to note, I switched from Nutrafol to Xtresse vitamins today. I now have a four month supply of Xtresse. Regarding Nutrafol, there was a blip on my blood work that suggested I move away from Nutrafol.

Sadly, with these types of treatment, it's a waiting game. My current timeline has the first milestone approaching in June which should be the end of minoxidil "dread shed" period - there is roughly a 4 month period when you can expect heavier than normal shedding. You can expect to see some growth at roughly 6 months which for me is late August to September. At 9 months, minoxidil alone might be deemed not working, so by January 2026 if I have no indication of new growth, it will indicate an entirely new approach is needed.

Now, microneedling, in theory, should speed up the growth response but it may still be early summer before I'll have short hairs in the sparcer areas. But this is definitely a "things will get worse before it gets better" situation. So increased shedding is potentially first before any regrowth. I bought a few wigs just in case I need to pivot to hiding my scalp AND ends during this period.

For mental health reasons, I'm journaling daily but will take pictures of my own monthly when I get my ends checked for dusting. But my dermatologist took baseline photos last month and will also take pictures with each visit.

This weekend I'll keep either my Hairbrella cap on or any of my lined caps as I need to be careful of sun exposure too! My scalp is a tad itchy but I have to resist catching.

Next month, I'll change my topical meds as my dermatologist wants to add in a mild topical steroid to my compounded mix to keep scalp inflammation low. For CCCA, a red, inflamed scalp is the enemy to hair growth AND if left untreated too long, can lead to scarring over the hair follicles to the point of follicle death . Any flare up can likely derail months of progress and reset my timeline.

My hair growth has been average and steady. Microtrimming has allowed me to see consistent retention and the thickening of my hair in the back (crown to nape). The hair in front has a lower density and I’m working on that, now that I have regimen for my ends. My ultimate goal is to minimize my microtrims from every moon cycle to every three moon cycles. This means I’m going to have to forgo WNGs for a while.

Thank you! In the photos, it looks like about 4 inches of thick, solid growth retained. If I count the hair length PRIOR to the trim, you had gained about 6 inches of solid growth and length retention. I love it!!!!! Thank you for sharing. That thickness you gained is no joke. Wow!

Colored my hair tonight, dried with the revair and then trimmed 1/2 inch with my SplitEnder.

Comparing my blow dried hair to my straight hair is not helpful. I will take the same shots for my next two check ins.

I was wondering if anyone still uses the splitender. I still have mine, I want to dust it off and use it, but I know it works better on straightened hair. I had a look last weekend and saw there are a lot of dupes and the price has gone up significantly since I bought mine.

This is my second one. My previous one died last year. I trimmed without it and realized that this is a have to have product for me.

Since I had my first one for probably 8 or 9 years I couldn't remember how much I paid. But if I use it at least 4x a year and keep it for more than 5 years than for me it was worth the investment.

I have layers so this saves me so much time and trims off far less than if I used scissors. I think I finished in 15 minutes.

I'm glad to get all of that out of the way. I've decided a few things.
1. I will keep my hair stretched with the revair when I'm not wearing 2 strands.
2. I will color, blow dry and dust my ends every 90 days instead of waiting longer.

I'm going to consider buying a comb attachment for my blow dryer. If I do i will try doing my hair twice a week. I think my crown does better with water every 4 days.

What do you do to prep for using the splitender? I would use blow dryer/hair straighteners for my natural hair, when I was textlaxed, a rollerset or a blow dry was sufficient.

I've not used it on my natural hair. If I was very patient, and allowed the time to get through my whole head, I reckon I could do it by taking very small tresses and chasing a fine comb with the splitender.

I don't do much. I did my regular cleanse. I added a little Mane Choice thermal treatment, combed through the section and used the RevAir to dry it. Then I used the SplitEnder. I start in the middle of the section because I really don't need to search for splits on the top half. That probably shortens the time as well.

My sections are moderately thing but not super thin. The new one has two blades a 1/8 and a 1/4. I just used the 1/4 inch, started half way up and used it on each section twice. I had about 10 sections. It was fairly quick.

The teeth on the split ender are so wide, I don't feel the hair needs to be super straight. In comparison to a wide tooth comb, the teeth are like removing 3 of the teeth on the comb.

I've used it on blow dried hair and flat iron hair and haven't found a need to go through the straightening process to use it.

I will try to remember to post a pic of what it took off.

Thank you :) Would you be able to post a pic of the splitender and or the model number please? It sounds a little fancier than the one I have, I also don't recall being able to choose how much you can take off.

That Revair keeps creeping up on the threads, I hope they make one for the UK at some point.

I will post pictures this weekend. I only bought a new one because the other one broke. No reason to buy a new one if the old one works. Imo

The Revair is great. But they also make high end blow dryer that I think can be just as gentle on the hair.

For me things I have are sometimes based on timing. I bought many things before there were options. And if I have something that works I won't buy anything else until it is broken or used up. I want the new RevAir but nope. Just have to suck it up and live with it.

I have 3 blow dryers, they're all in my opinion different. I still have the first blow dryer I bought, it still works, it comes with a diffuser, the diffuser is not big in circumference and the nodles are long, not even in length.

I have a Parlux, which is good, I bought a Willie Morrow comb that I keep on it. This is the same dryer my stylist used which iwas the reason behind purchasing and is the most expensive of the 3. I recently bought a Babyliss pro which came with a comb, big round diffuser (my main reasons for buying) and a couple of concentrator. I also got it at a considerable discount and my friend paid for it as a birthday gift.

The RevAir is completely different from the ones I have, both in the way it works and that it's like a system. I have multiple tools like straighteners, I have mini one for bangs, GHD which are the ones I'd use if I want to get straight, I also have a Remington that you can change the temperature on ( you can't do that with the GHD), I only purchased this because my cheaper ones that I used for weaves and travelling died on me while I was in Kenya. I wouldn't buy unless it was for a specific purpose that my arsenal couldn't meet or as you said, something that needed replacing.
