I find my scalp likes to be cleansed regularly but because of hard water I prefer to keep my hair away from it if I can. I've been doing okay with 1x per week washes but I do notice my ends are a bit drier than I'd like.

I've been looking into ways to cleanse my scalp that do not need to be rinsed out. I plan to try out micellar water on my scalp and see how that goes. This would also allow me to cleanse my scalp on my running days during the week which would help a ton. I think less wash days would be beneficial to both my hair overall and especially my ends.

I think even being able to stretch my wash days to every other week without developing dermatitis would be helpful.

Joining this challenge in the dying months of the year to hopefully improve the conditions of my ends.

Current status: split ends and breakage due to heat being used without heat protectant, and neglecting hair while in knotless braids. This situation persisted for a year, so it should take me a year for my hair to recover fully from my errors

Plan of Action:
  1. Do wash day in at least 10 sections to minimise tangling
  2. Wash and deep condition with heat once a week
  3. Air dry only, no use of heat
  4. Keep hair in a stretched state to minimise tangling
  5. Use of oil/shea butter to seal heavily
  6. Trim 1" (after I buy hair scissors)
  7. Two coverings for hair at night (satin scarf then satin bonnet on top)
I am hoping this will help with healthier ends by the end of this year. I haven't retained length at all this year due to breakage, so I need to set myself up for length retention in 2025

Welcome @VarieYvette

It's never too late to join!

I didn't notice any protein product in your regimen. Is that intentional?

My shedded hair is cottony, cloud super soft. It's like this when I first remove it during or immediately after my finger detangling sessions. BUT, once I let it sit for about 10 minutes, the softness diminishes a bit.

Observation.

Keeping hair covered seems to go BEYOND minimizing friction while you are sleep and/or out and about. Keeping the hair covered for longer times may protect the delicate balance that produces that hair softness. Hmmm.....

@Chicoro, also remember that shed hair is no longer receiving the benefit of sebum or any vitamins and nutrients from the body.

Thanks for reading my post! Are you saying this in relation to its dryness or in relation to its softness?
In relation to its dryness. I view hair like plants, if you feed them and water them on a regular basis, they will grow healthy and strong. If you neglect them, they will suffer. If you cut them off from their main source of life, they make look healthy and beautiful for a short period of time, but remember, death set in once they were cut off from the source. It's just a matter of time before they show the signs by actually drying up and dying. (Wow, this is a good spiritual lesson as well.)

I scheduled an appointment for a weave with closure to hide my hair. I will only keep it in for 5-6 weeks.
Right now my hair is in a bun, but it’s getting cold and I want to protect my hair from the dryness that comes with the weather. I would just wig, but my wigs are tired, lol.

Thank you for clarifying. I agree 1000%!

Look at you preemptively working and planning in advance to protect your lovely hair.

Now THAT’s some self care. If you feel like it, let us see it when you get it done. I’m no longer hiding my nosiness.

Definitely spending more time on my steps. Last week I applied leave-in, gel, combed through and then put my hair in several flat twists. When I took it down today, my hair still felt moisturized and my ends weren't sticking.

Today, I did the same steps but I only put in two flat twist. So I will see next week whether the gel is enough or whether I need to do more twists to get the same results.

Last week I used the micellar water on my scalp Tuesday and Thursday. (I also used it tonight)

On Saturday instead of doing a full wash day I used a no rinse shampoo that dispenses as a foam and focused it on my scalp.

So far the micellar water has been awesome. No flakes, no dandruff at all, no buildup, irritation or inflammation. My scalp looks and feels great as if I was washing my hair multiple times a week.

That said the no rinse shampoo was drying to my scalp unlike the micellar water so I would probably only use that if it's been 3-4 weeks since I've washed my hair. It's a bit too much for my dry scalp at the 1 week mark.

I have not used the design essentials at all during this time but I did use my usual anti dandruff shampoo when I did wash my hair.

Long story short, I believe I am at a potential solution for both taking care of my scalp as well as catering to the needs of my hair.

I did notice that my hair was a bit weighed down at the beginning of this week so I'll probably moisturize with a lighter hand throughout the week and add grease to my ends as needed as they do tend to dry out a bit faster than the rest of my hair.

This challenge has definitely made me more thoughtful about my ends. I used to treat my ends the same way as the rest of my hair which led to them being too dry. I started moisturizing my hair more which made my ends happy but then the rest of my hair was wet all the time. Just realized over the weekend that I can focus that moisturizing on just my ends (duh). And now both my lengths and ends seem to be a lot happier.

I think a major difference is that this is the first time in years that both my hair isn't bleached and I'm not doing wash and goes regularly so it has been a process to figure out what my hair likes.

It feels almost new to me even though it probably shouldn't at this point.

As I’m awaiting my weave appointment, I’m currently in 32 pickie plaits under a wig. Keeping my hair moisturized under a wig cap seems to be difficult at this time. All I have is water and Shea butter. I may have to go and get some S-Curl.

Are you using a nylon cap?
I've been wearing these mens satin skull/wave caps under everything, including wigs, for over a decade!

I've found that they do a good job of keeping my hair moisturized underneath. I use it inside out so that the satin part is touching my and the seams face out, away from my hair. And, it's not as tight as a nylon cap so I don't feel like my circulation is being cut off. Lol

Also, have you tried whole head baggying under the nylon cap or even overnight before putting on your nylon cap? Maybe that will help.

Thank you! I will look for these caps. I have not done any baggying. Maybe I should start, since it’s getting cooler.

Once again, the devil may be in the details. I have always said that one should never mix Shea butter and Vaseline/Petroleum jelly products on the hair. That is because the result is often a dull, greasy mess.

BUT guess what? If you MELT them together and then apply, you just might get a product that not only seals in moisture but also leaves a shine and NOT a dull, coated cast.

Details, details, details. They really do matter. Small tweaks, tiny modifications can help deepen your understanding and skyrocket your success. Queen Shea and Grease together for the Win, melted and pre-mixed, not applied topically in two separate coats.

@pikkonoloidlee don't berate yourself for not seeing 'the obvious'. It is often the obvious thing that is the HARDEST to see. The details and and clarity come with experience and deeper understanding. Both of which take time and analysis. So, refining one's process and learning which modifications and tweaks to make for better success is really, really hard to do.
