My hair is getting lighter and lighter, its now a very light golden brown. Im just not understandng why its getting lighter. I do not apply and colors to my hair. Im thinking it may be from natural causes, like the sun. And maybe from touch-ups but I only get a touch ups every few months or so. Is this happeneing to anybody else?

My hair turned a medium brown color over the years. I thought it was a combo of relaxers, heat styling and sun exposure...

MirrorMirror,

What Sassygirl said can definitely make the hair lighter in color (especially relaxing).

I had no idea...Last year I texturized my hair before I went to Ocean City. I swear I was almost blonde, maybe this was why.

I'm experiencing the same thing but this has always been the case with my hair. I don't relax often (every 3 months) and I don't use a lot of heat in my hair. I just thought it was natural for my hair to do this.

My natural hair is jet black,, but in the summer I get this almost blonde streaks especially in the front of my hair..

My mothers hair turns a sort of red in the summer.

Maybe its just genetic????? cause we don't ever really use heat on our hair, and it only happens in the summer.

It's partially environmental - sun, wind etc. But hair, like many things, oxidizes over time. Particularly when exposed to chemicals of any kind. You open the cuticle, you close it (during heat treatments, conditioning, relaxing etc.) and in the process there can be some wear and tear on the cortex (where incidentally the melanin that gives the hair it's pigment is housed - among other things that give the hair it's physical characteristics - texture, density etc.) which sometimes results in small amounts of color loss. Over time this can be noticeable to the individual - but it's nothing to worry too too much about unless you are going from black to blond.
