LHCF's pH Balanced HEALTHY Hair Strands Challenge

now that i'm in my individual braids... 2strand twists == PHASE
since my pH balancing start... my hair is overmoisturized often
which means my old balancing routine needs to be tuned down a bit! my hair rarely ever needs re-moisturizing

so NOW... i'm STARTING A a REDUCED PRODUCT USAGE PHASE... (still) ALL BALANCED PRODUCTS (very simple with less product application).... consistent steam utilization
I have been steaming every now & then... whenever i feel like it, but with braids this iiiish gets tricky

so i'm aiming to apply LITTLE OR NO product at the roots... but steam more to ensure moisture retention

braids I HOPE will get me thru my ugggmo' phase I seem to be in currently....(after going natural earlier this year)
thus I will be trying to protective style this way for 1-1.5yrs

I will however end this braid challenge when i run out of weave! (lol... have a house full, not buying anymore)

hoping the steamer does not affect the synthetic hair poorly.... here goes nothing

thehairlab Are you adjusting your shampoos and conditioners or are you buying them already ph balanced.

I'm definitely intrigued by the difference between aloe juice and gel and my ph strips should arrive by tomorrow. Excited!!!!!

I wonder if amla (as an infusion) can be used as a ph adjuster, apparently it has a lot of vitamin C. I have read that vitamin C is just not convenient because more expensive but it can be used in place of citric acid (as long as you double the quantity)... And somewhere else that hair really likes vitamin C.

Can I say I'm excited again?
LOL

Thanks for the info Thehairlab!

amla ??? no... most of my conditioners (most commercial conditioners are pH balanced)
I have a house full so if u need me to check one, let me know
If the conditioners were not within my preferred range I probably would adjust them
I adjusted my gels... but I don't use them currently

Shampoos are tricky. I found the pH ranges to be all over the place
B/C I feel closing the cuticle is more important, I focus more on ending products
If my shampoo is way out of range... (like Dr. Bronners THEN ABSOLUTELY!!!!) A great many of my favorite hair stars dilute their shampoos anyone... but I stop diluting them, unless I'm balancing one

I HAVE AN ANOTHER O-M-FIN-G GOING ON RIGHT NOW!! I HATE.... HATE WAVE NOUVEAU BUT OWN 2 32 OUNCE BOTTLES
I MIXED IT WITH TRADER JOE'S CONDITIONER, ALOE VERA JUICE, MY WHEAT GERM OIL & HEMP SEED OIL
MY HAIR LOOKS SOOOOOOOOOO JUICY THE NEXT DAY I'M LIKE WTF!!!! I'VE BEEN USING LIKE A BOTTLE OF KINKY CURLY KNOT TODAY A WEEK WITH THIS SAME FORMULA (playing around with different oils at times) and this iiiish is cheaper and waaaaaay more juicy than normal

MY hair looks like @V.I.P 's hair in her pic (which is to die for)
I usually have soft, moisturized... but dull looking hair the day after NO MA'AM NO MA'AM

hmmmmm I'll look that up later, never considered or looked at the properties in amla
I would love to hear you results

Just wanted to add that I'm in hair heaven today. I've been making flax seed gel for 3 years and I liked it. I finally put into practice what I was suggesting to all my friends, which is: paying attention to the ph balance.

So this time I used spring water and I used ACV to reach a ph balance of 4 to 5 and I bottled my gel. For some reason the day after it had a ph of 4, just like KCCC.
I applied it on top of Giovanni direct (ph= 4) and air dried. DIFFERENT RESULT, not in the way it looks but in the way it feels. My hair is smooth, very smooth, much more than usual. The leave-in feels sealed in, just lke when I use KCCC.

The original ph of my flax gel without the ACV was 7 (the ph of water I guess). I liked it. But now I love it. Just wanted to write it down here in case somebody else uses homemade flaxseed gel.

The Hairlab, if I find the amla I will definitely come here and let you know.

Where did you buy your ph strips? I've searched everywhere in town but none of their strips go as low as 4.0. I think I seen a thread on where most are buying these but I can't locate it. Thx!

is that u on youtube showing the make of you flaxseed gel? a girl on there makes it.... it freaks me out when she squeezes it thru the bag.... my skin crawls

have u tried the aloe gel or juice in your mix? i heart aloe juice... totally marrying this iiiish

I have a mixture of Aloe Vera Juice and distilled water I spray on my hair nightly. It has a Ph of 4.5 and I seal it with my ayurvedic oils or coconut oil.:drunk: it's been working nicely. I also use Kimmay's leave in on wash days, so twice a week.

I bought my ph strips from luvnaturals.com and I think there's about 100 in there

You can also purchase ph strips at Whole Foods. They are different from the ones that Kimmaytube uses, but they are just as good. The ph test range for these strips on a roll start at 4.5 and go all the way up to 7.5. The color range is yellow (acidic) to blue (alkaline). I found the strips on the shelf close to the probiotic section. If you can't find them, just ask! I've been having lots of fun testing out some products I use. The brand is Enzymedica, and comes on a 15 foot single roll dispenser packed in a 2 inch square box; enough for 120 tests! :) :yep: I've been adding aloe vera juice to a lot of my braid spray mixes, and trying to balance things out, now that I know what to look for!!!!:grin::grin: I'm so glad to be learning about ph levels- this is gonna be a great thing for my hair!

Check-in....wanted to update that my hair is doing great with using Ph Balanced products. This was the first week of my new regi - washed with curls cleanse cream, dc'd with their conditioner mixed with a little mega silk moisturize conditioner under my steamer, followed by Kimmaytube leave (I added a little wheat germ oil). I then double strand twisted my hair and it stayed moisturized all week!

@divachyk i have some 0-14 universal strips i can sell u if you need them/can't find any... PM me

@brownbean96 i use s-curl in my leave in mix now.... working out an all natural moisture leave in... kimmay's version is the ish!!! just don't like that it's not moisturized the next day

@KnaughtyKurls... i'm all about ACV on my scalp... but aloe juice for the hair!!!! trying to work it out!! lol

I didn't know that Nacadit dominican products were Ph Balanced.. Not sure of the exact numbers but I saw this while looking for some dominican hair products. The Deep Conditioners are PH Balanced..

LOL yeah the gel looks alive... It's not me but I learned from youtube, from a recipe that involves no squeezing (from "the hairoine"). The recipe actually has a little aloe juice as an ingredient, so I definitely have to try it in my next batch! I wish my hair was fine with pure aloe but apparently life would have been too easy!

i notice a lot of products are showing this .... or reflecting this now in their branding

i think joico or somebody:grin: i talked about above showed the research where former companies did so

I WILL SAY THIS: i notice a difference in pH balancing my products with other methods...(tons of ways) versus the regular ol' aloe vera juice

My h-a-i-r hearts aloe vera juice!but if it's not refrigerated... my hair dries or hardens easily

I also notice I've been going TOOOOOOOOOO hard with the ceramides

I exchanged ceramides on kimmay's leave-in jive and my hair is so strong... like pump yo' fist BLACK POWER strong! I actually kept trying to figure out w-t-f changed my hair... and I realized I've been heavy on the ceramide juice

in fact, I've been exclusively on the ceramides juice for many months now..... leaving my castor oils, jojoba oils, grapeseed oils, olive oils, etc. etc. and all their cousins in the dark

I'll need to interchange them more often now b/c I'm seeing my hair losing some of it's elasticity (despite being W-E-L-L moisturized)

....... super pissed with curlmart, but happy i'm stocked on tons of stuff for a while

so my continued focus on pH balancing will be shared w/ ceramide enhancing .....with my new found SAA affinity! yep... anything but swallow a dayuuuum vitamin (taking a deeper look into henna qualities soon)

I've been absent, but still love the BC to WL challenge.... I'm 4ever committed to that theme, but I need a healthier diet, and some supplements to ensure my strands are at their optimal state when I arrive....GET IT? ARRIVE IN STYLE?:look: ok ...

no long, flat, damaged, thin, wispy, lifeless, split, WL strands

-so my official update is ..... ceramides are kicking arse... but I need to pull back

-aloe vera juice is god sent.... but it's time to step up my game :yep: getting off of the walmart/cvs $8 gallon , and moving towards some organic whole leaf aloe vera juice

my hair does not like aloe vera gel.... or at least none that I've tried; perhaps the real deal will work better

I'm sooooooooo over my every 2 day trimming phase.... now moving into the real retention phase
-at this point I'll marry a good leave in conditioner... but i'm at a point where I have tons of great DC's so not enthused at all anymore:ohwell:

I hate wigs... but about to flip the game on them! They will be my new retention secret (which apparently I was the last to catch on:drunk:... so not such a secret at all) THE HALF WIG THREAD is just sick! I couldn't believe the natural touch the ladies put on those pieces.... waaaaaay inspired

the rest of the year...AND the remainder of my journey... it's the battle of the leave-ins & moisturizers
(to be honest... I feel I pay enough for my leave-ins to be excellent moisturizers... so umma need them to all stop half-arsing me and do the job)

gb

no idea what to do with all my hard proteins.... these ceramides got me good:blush:

LOL I love your posts Hairlab!!

This Aloe Vera is still a "?" to me. I put a little bit of cold aloe in my conditioner and it works. I almost bath in organic aloe juice and my hair gets dry. I massage my scalp with it and my scalp says "what the hell are you trying to do with that stuff now?"

- juice or gel
- vera, barbadensis or ferox
- cold or hot
- the plant or not
- pure or diluited?

I'm confused. It behaves like a humectant on my hair, so that might be a reason why sometimes it works and many times doesn't. Or that might be a reason why it works in my conditioners, where I also add olive olive which conuterbalances the humectant properties it has, who knows...

this was my best implementation of 2010!!!! repaired my hair's needs

now i must balance ****pH***** with:

1- *****henna****** (primary mission)

2- *****solid regimen w/ ceramide usage**** (mission complete)

3- *****SAA's******* (jury out)
