I'm really enjoying this thread ladies. It's a really simple concept actually. Keep hair where it's supposed to be chemically, and it will grow. Interesting. Keep it coming.
I will probably test this theory out myself because it's so simple.

OK - just for clarification are we making sure that everything we put in/on our hair is between 4.5 - 5.5? I've mastered that with the leavein and my shampoo but not so much with the pre-poo or DC or henna. More recipes please!

i thought it was marvelously stupid that i ignored this factor despite
my 10 year science education and _____ yrs experience:lachen:
I did remember a lot of non-black product marketing back in the day emphasizing ph balanced this and ph balanced that... but of course then I was not as much as a hair junkie:rolleyes:

but it's simple dip a strip if u're questioning a product but i'm now testing this theory but research wise... it makes for the best common sense tool i've utilized to date (on my HHJ) .... i'm enjoying this learning process, of acquiring healthy (as far as dead protein goes:perplexed ) hair strands
in theory.... it should make a hellll-a-va difference (very little significance in theory and practice until proven, and retested... research says yes)

will see 1 year from now:lick:

personally i'm using 4-6.... but aiming for the 5 mark every time:blush:

been doing pretty well.... but 4.5-5.5 is optimal (ph of your hair strand)

Whew - this is going to be hard work:perplexed but I'm still committed. Sooooo....
tonight I want to co-wash (with an oil rinse) should I:
- try to tweak or use a condish that it falls with in the range?
- ignore the oil cuz it has no pH becuz it has no water?
- use my tweaked Kimmay leave-in (yay that's a winner:grin:)
- tweak my gel or hair lotion or moisturizer?

what GEL r u using? ecostyler? i adjust that long before this process to get a more moisturizing eco styler gel, but i'm not a gel user! (add olive oil, aloe vera juice, some aloe vera gel) << much better, and the hold is still there
I currently check all my shampoos & leave-ins .... but this should not be hard, unless u make all your products by hand, most are already in the 4-7 range.... I have always worked on my products for optimal MOISTURE BALANCE!! now i understand more how to get it
with the cuticles lying flat, holding moisture, more elasticity, more shine, less splits

my bet is your hair lotion is already between 4-7.... u put all that on after
you use the kimma leave-in you're using????? I don't need anything else really

I find that the shampoo ranges (particular natural ones... have been all over the place, and of course any product you will LEAVE IN YOUR HAIR will have the longest/greatest effect)
I have checked my conditioners (b/c i often mix them.... but also....b/c i'm still using commercial conditioners until they are gone, they all originate between 4-7) I did have an 8

What hair lotion do you have? haven't needed a hair lotion AT ALL since i started this process ... hair lotions are usually water based so let me know the pH
i have a few old ones ...let me see be right back:grin:

my pH of cantu shea butter oil moisturizer is = 7 (if i were to use, i would add aloe vera juice or gel)
my ORS oil moisturizer LOTION is = 4 (i would like a 5, but four works well for sure for smoothing the cuticle)
i haven't used either in some time

I wanna join too :) My ends are a hot mess. I'm currently using mane and tail condish with coco, olive & peppermint oil and glycerin/coco oil for my moisturizer and my hair feels like crap. It's growing but with tons and tons of split ends.

Hey babe.... Did u pm me about a gel? I'm lost b/c my computer net is down.... Using a sloooooooow arse blackberry. Wow I think as I'm learning formulas I'm having fun but the ends I've never had issues with splits. I guess you've already tried trimming right? I trim regularly but also what are you favorite or most frequently used conditioners?? Do u moisturize & seal daily (I don't). I'm trying to determine where in your routine are the splits coming from. What comb or brush are u using? Doing so on wet or dry hair? Are u currently using direct heat? Hmmmmmmm....thinking sis b/c I despise split ends with a passion (I rarely get them)

Ya, that's my main problem, split ends, when my hair is wet it feels wonderful, but once it dries to feels like crap. I don't trim. Idk if this is correct but I was reading Cathy Howse's book on growing black hair and she said trimming hair is a myth. You don't have to trim your hair for it to grow. So I haven't been trimming since I started. But back in the day, when I did trim it would just grow with damaged ends. :ohwell:

I only use Mane & Tail conditioner and I mix coconut, olive and peppermint oil in it and sit under a hair dryer twice a week.
I've been moisturizing with coconut oil, glycerin and aloe Vera (from the plant).
My hair feels "moist" but still very very damaged. Today I brought aloe vera juice and castor oil. I'm waiting on the jojoba oil in the mail. So I hope this change will help.

I use short bristle and long bristle brushes. I use them on dry and wet hair. I don't use a blow dryer or curling irons and I stretch my relaxers(2-3 months).

Thanx so much for helping me figure this out. I'm at a loss right now to what I'm doing wrong.

i don't see any heat in your routine... so i personally (no diagnosis with more evidence:grin:) think you are looking at that brush producing most of your damage
i use a modified denman.... but i barely use that

i agree with cathy (not that she cares:ohwell:) THAT WITHOUT HEAT... trimming is rarely needed... however i trim frequently, and mostly b/c i'm obsessed with it, but i believe my hair responds best with healthy/freshly trimmed ends

mane-n-tail is not my fave... but it's mostly the ingredients (from cosmeticdatabase.com) that i don't care for
I still have tons of it left... it curls my hair well

despite cathy's advice... i feel UNTIL YOU GET HOLD OF WHAT'S CAUSING YOUR SPLITS.... you must start to trim...or your splits will surely travel and cause more damage

start "dusting" not trimming regularly and possible switch conditioners for a while
it is my limited understanding that mane-n-tail and coconut oil both contain proteins.... i see you have a moisturizer (aloe vera gel hates me) and even in most products it hates me = hair reacts poorly

but if you aren't protein sensitive... i would just completely eliminate that brush for 2-3 months, and trim or dust once/twice a year minimum (for now) as you see your ends improve....ADJUST???
i don't know if you liked or have tried that leave-in formula thingy kimmay has but the ladies seem to enjoy it "especially for their ends"

i've tried it but the conditioners i used were awful, trying it with knot today sometime this week

the only other thing i would ask from what you've listed is which relaxer are you using? when i was relaxed, certain ones produced dryness over time while others didn't... but your moisture protein balance can be checked with the strand test

i won't let go til we get you fixed sis! :theteam:

How long (days/weeks) do you ladies keep your kimmaytube leave-in before chucking it and whipping up a fresh batch?

I will def. eliminate the brush and see if that helps. I'm waiting to try Kimmay's formula, waitin for my jojoba oil in the mail. But, I'm def. up for changing moisturizers.
And at this point trimming can only help.
I use the cheapest relaxer I can find, which is soft & sheen. I think I'm going to try to go natural for a year and see if that helps. But, that is so hard.thank God for protective styles.

Still wondering about the below question ---

I'm not a part of the challenge, but I do use the leave in. I make small batches in an old qhemet amla & olive heavy cream container, about half way. That usually lasts me about 3 (give or take) uses, then I make a new batch. I wouldn't make a giant container of it, just to be on the safe side.

Hope that helped

Thx. I used the last of my batch last night. I kept it refrigerated and it lasted about (afraid to admit it) 3 weeks. I don't have ph strips to test but it still worked the same on my hair as day 1. I don't use it daily....I only use it on wash days, hence the reason it lasted so long. I wash 1x or 2x(max) a week and got about 5-6 uses out of it.

Never I use it until its gone. Sometimes I make a double batch so I won't have to create a new batch every week. Should I be concerned?:perplexed

Wow - all this was for me? LOL!

my ORS oil moisturizer LOTION is = 4 (i would like a 5, but four works well for sure for smoothing the cuticle)
i haven't used either in some time

I normally use Kimmay's leave in (sometimes laced with Miss Jessie's Buttercreme and some Hawaiian Silky 14n1). This weekend I used it straight cuz I was gonna try the braid n' curl style by WestNDNbeauty, but I added setting lotion (I tweeked it by adding some AV juice though - yay for me!) Gonna try to do more roller sets.

I'm late but I'm in. I have been using Kimmay formula for about 2 months now and my hair is all the better for it!

I also use her buffer method when washing out shampoo.:up:

monarae I remember reading all your posts on naturallycurly... you're awesome

I tried the buffer method (add conditioner? b4 rinseout???) or you mean the finger tips?? it didn't work for me

I tried 10000 conditioners with her leavein... none of them worked for me beside the kckt

i use any oils, i usually use my ceramide oils in the leave in concoction since some are suppose to undergo heating changes

which conditoner are using as a base?

lol
I always have and probably always will condition my hair from root to tip..... so often i have none left, or will have to make a second batch to use in my whole head (extremely heavy handed)

but if you refrigerate your contents, you should never throw it out.... are you not using much? not using it often? do wash infrequently??? what is your conditioner base (your choice)?? i use a ton of that stuff

it's not that moisturizing, I have to come back later day or 2 with some heavy moisturizing antics lol

i just read my post to you lol
i don't know what the helllll-o i was writing about but i've never owned any karen's body beautiful in my life
but i plan on buying the hair milk.....hmmmmmmm
what the heck was i reading that day i don't know, roflmao

i just swore i could never ever evvvvvver be without a steamer again!!! i mean i went through hellll and high water to get that steam :perplexed

now that i'm ph balancing my life:blush::grin: i swear i rarely ever ever steam or deep condition!

i use to deep condition at least 3 times a week with heat... and/or baggy 2-3 times per week (prepoo, etc)

now i steam once in 2-3 weeks? ph balance always... hair moisture, conditioned always

this system is like some kind of moisture lock on my hair:look:

HEY SIS! i don't have a reggie
not sure if that's good or bad :ohwell:... but i pretty much live my life as "UNSTRUCTURED AS POSSIBLE"!!!!:lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen:
i'm pretty much a VERY free spirited person... I CONFORM TO FEW RULES or Norms whenever possible :perplexed

seriously tho', I honestly have no reggie.....i probably never will!! HOWEVER, I MAKE IT A POINT TO ALWAYS listen to my hair (and body) conforming only to those needs:yep::yep::yep:.......trying to make caring for my hair (and oh my god my body) as fun as possible

i usually opt for pH balanced products THAT I LOVE... not to be confused with choosing them simply based on pH at all:nono:.... I adjust the pH on ALLLLLL leave-ins that i choose... that's it! my hair loooooooves aloe vera juice, ACV.... yet hates aloe vera gel! It's super easy to adjust any products, but in general...i don't feel the need (unless they are complete 'waay; out of my target range)

I came into this hair journey ALREADY A LIFE LONG PJ'er.... so as i continue thru.... ridding my pile (more like my guest room) of older products, i am consciously moving towards nearly all pH balanced products (whether i'm adjusting them, or selecting them such as joico = pH 4.5:spinning:)

the ONLY thing i've changed with my hair in the last 1-2 months is the opting for balancing shampoos, leave-ins, and some moisturizers . My hair must have needed the change because it really has the look & feel of new hair:rolleyes:.... science aside... perhaps i was simply torturing it prior to now, dunno.... coasting on a ceramide-loving/pH balanced life from here on out:yep: (praying for a scalp resolution ahead)

CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT HOW ALOE VERA JUICE HAS AFFECTED MY MOISTURE LEVEL....

i will say adjusting S-curl has been a challenge.... it doesn't seem to like any additives
desperately need a good s-curl & rosewater recipe
