I'm in a serious hair dilemma, ya'll :ohwell:. Ever since I became a member here I've been trying to keep better track of my hair progress. I got my camera out and everything :yep:. It's been almost a year now and I'm starting to think my hair follicles are plotting against me :look:. I'm looking at my progress pics like :whyme:. (See attachments)

Plus, I got my hair TRIMMED recently (a couple of weeks ago) and I'm basically at the same point that I was a year ago *except my layers have grown in* My hair lady said I had a lot of damage and she basically hacked it all off. SO now I basically have to start all over again.

NOW, I was hoping I could pick ya'lls brains for some answers on what I should differently for the next 12 months.

What I have been doing consistently for the past year:

-braidouts (and re-braid at night)
-use giovanni direct leave-in and seal EVOO or coconut oil
-no heat (only for trims; I've only straightened twice in the past year)
-pull back in a ponytail

What I should do to ensure optimal health and maximum growth in the next 12 months:

:scratchch

ETA: My hair is fine and breaks very easily

Nothing is wrong with your hair follicles. It sounds like the stylist trimmed off all of your progress. Are you natural?

also, do you shampoo or co-wash & how often do you deep condition your hair? How often do you moisturize?

I shampoo weekly and moisturize with giovanni direct leave-in almost daily. And yes, I am natural. And I see what you mean about my stylist cutting off too much but my hair wasn't healthy (according to her) and my hair growth wasn't anywhere near what it should have been before the trim. It was only looks like 2-3 inches at the most (for almost a year, that seems like nothing).

some people are just slow growers. There isnt anything wrong with your follicles.

When your stylist tells you your ends are damaged does she say what it feels like? You should really get specifics.

since your hair is fine you need a dose of protein every now and then. Yes, even naturals have to use it even if they dont use heat.

My DD is natural and she was constantly getting splits. I started using a protein shampoo and condish (millcreek keratin) every 2 weeks and Beyond the zone protein cocktail every few days (its a spray) and so far so good.

What do you detangle your hair with and when do you do this?

Firstly your hair is beautiful :yep: Love your curls they are so cute.

The bolded are your real issues

- scissor happy hair lady. I have noticed that uneven = damaged to hairdressers. Esp in your case where it seems your hair grows out in layers. Watch them like a hawk.

- You may be manipulating too much for your "fine hair which breaks easily". Have you considered other protective styles which req less manipulation?

- be careful with ponytails are the ends being protected or are you gradually sacrificing your progress (and possibly eventually your hair-line). Maybe loose buns would be more favourable.

- If you have fine fragile hair you may have to consider upping your protein treatments to include mild protein on a weekly basis and maybe even henna treatments once a month to thicken and strengthen your strands.

I was going to say that.
Maybe your braid outs are the culprit. Esp since you said your layers have grown in, which means your hair is growing. I can't see the pictures though. :(

I bet your hair wasn't damaged at all it was just uneven. I've seen it so many times I wanna scream!! A stylist will say someone needs a trim and they really don't. It's like they don't understand that hair doesn't grow evenly. :nono:

OP I suggest you learn how to trim your own hair or find someone you can really trust.

I can definitely see a difference in both of your picks. Your hair right now looks to be at least 2 inches longer than it was last year. So I'm sure the remaining inches you got, were "trimmed." Don't worry, your regimen sounds fine to me.
