Hello ladies!
Well, I never thought I would ever do it, but after working so hard for the last six months I have decided to transition. What led me to this decision is that I've been working so hard at taking care of my hair (no to very little heat, protective styles, moisturizing daily, etc..) and if one fail swoop I lost about an inch

! I know exactly what led to it, it was my first time stretching my relaxer to 12 weeks and with about two inches of new growth I guess my hair just couldn't take anymore and neither can I! I work way to hard to loose what I work so hard for... I will transition with the help of braids instead of doing the big chop so I could really use any advise and encouragement from my girls!

I have a question: I stopped getting relaxers last February and have been dealing with two different textures now that my new growth is coming in. I currently have about four inches of virgin hair and I have been fortunate enough not to experience any breakage. I think that's because when I did get relaxers I only used no-lye child perms, and my natural texture therefore isn't that far from my relaxed texture. Anyway, what I wanted to know is whether or not flat ironing my hair once a week can cause me to lose the length I've accomplished and am trying to maintain. My hair is approx. 3 inches above my bra strap and I want it to reach the bottom of the strap. I wash my hair twice a week and air dry it one of those times. The second time I wash, I give myself a hot oil treatment, then I put a heat protecting straightening balm in my hair and allow my hair to dry under a hooded dryer. Once dry, I spray a heat protectant on each section before straightening my hair with a ceramic iron. The only heat I use is the flat iron once a week, because I like to wear my hair down on the weekends. The rest of the week I wear my hair up in a bun and I coat the ends with oil. Do you think I should reduce the flat ironing to once every two weeks, or is once a week okay??? I'm good at protecting my hair otherwise, and do not want to ruin my chances of having three inches of new length by August. Please help!!

ps. I also trim my ends once every eight weeks.

Stac, I haven't applied any heat to my hair because when I wear my afro puff I'll have straight ends sticking out. Do you plan on wearing your hair in it's natural state after you trim the relaxed ends or will you flat iron every week?

Hi hairlove,
Your hair is truly beautifullllllllllllllll:)
I loved the braidout you did in December with the perm rods. I'm going to start using my perm rods, hopefully that ought to be less manipulation on my hair. I hope it looks as good as yours.
Did I say, that I loved your braidout

Today I have decided to transition my hair. I'm tired of the chemicals and it would be nice to see the hair the Lord has blessed me with. I'm currently post 12 weeks into my relaxer. Please wish me luck.

Stacia,

Have you been lurking since January of 2004?

This is neat how this is your first post ever for the forum. Welcome aboard and welcome to the transitioners club!

I'm 4.5 months so far into my transition (I'm transitioning without the big chop to a teenie weenie 'fro). Anyway, what made me transition was stretching my relaxer to 12 weeks as well. Then, the relaxer wouldn't straighten my hair back in July and October so I thought what's the use of relaxing if it's not going to turn out straight like I wanted it to? Plus, I feel like my hair will be healthier as a natural. I'll miss my relaxed hair but transitioning is a great experience so far!

Happy Hair Growing!

Welcome and good luck to all the new transitioners. Im transitioning thru braids, i've been getting my hair cornrow but i finally got medium size individuals put in so the braids will last longer. Basically when i was in cornrows i tried changing my style so my hair wouldn't pull the same way all the time. I treat my braids like its my hair (after all my hair is in the braids). handling it carefully, washing, deep conditioning and even hot oil treatments. Spray with braid spray everday, i also use infusium 23 on my braids but i know alot of ladies on here don't like infusium or have experience breakage with it, but i works fine in my hair. The key is to keep your hair moisturized, since i've heard braids can be very drying. I don't use the human hair because im scared when i wash it will slip out because of the texture of the human hair. Use something to take your braids out (like unbraid) and make sure you untangle your hair really good before washing, if your hair is long, you should section your hair and wash in sections to prevent the ends from knotting.

Sorry for writing a book...lol, hope it help. Feel free to PM me if u like.

Welcome!!

In a sense i'm still transitioning my mind, and i'm wearing extensions still I have a couple more inches, maybe till October this year?

Look forward to hearing from you!
