on my my moms side no long hair.... however i do beleive my moms has potential 2 have long hair she is 3 type hair she just has always kept a short cut, or done abusive things to her hair.

on my dads side most everyone has type 4 long hair when jheri curls were in i remember both of my aunts and dad having waist lenth hair...my aunts r relaxed now and prefer shoulder length cuts though...i have one cousin that keeps her relaxed hair at waist length.....i suspect that everyone on my dads family has the potential to have long hair they just dont like that much hair...i can say majority on dads side has healthy hair no matter the length:grin:

Yes. On both sides. My mom had long hair when she was in her late teens and now it's shoulder length. My aunt(Mom's side) has hair that's mid back. My other aunt (daddy's side) who washes her hair maybe twice a month and doesn't always condition and uses heat and is very gray had armpit length hair until she got sick. My sister has shoulder length hair, almost armpit and I had BSL before I cut mine's last month.

Nobody on my dad's side has long hair.

I remember as a child my auntie on my mums side having BSL length hair and all my cousins too.

My other aunt on my mums side also has shoulder length locs.(As a child i always remember her hacking off my hair!!!!)

On my mum's grandmother had waistlength natural hair.

My mum now has BSL natural hair. She always tells me leave the damn chemicals alone!!!

I want to know if your long hair is a result of great hair care or your genes

Anyone can have the best genes, but still no hair if it's not taken care of properly...it's all in the care!

Sure, some hair types are very fast growing, like Asian hair for instance, but without the proper care even their hair would break and fall out. :yep:

My maternal side has thick hair. My mother hair has the potential to grow long but she is constantly cutting. My paternal has length. My half sisters have BSL hair but their hair has never been as thick as mine.

It would appear so. On my mum's side, my grandmother at her longest was MBL or longer. She keeps it trimmed to about APL now. She trims it herself:rolleyes:. She doesn't allow anyone else to touch it. Not even me. She has always been like that. My great grandmother had WL and her sister had TBL. The hair types as far as I can see ranged from 3b to 4a. The only thing I can remember them doing was putting lots of coconut oil in their hair. They all had natural hair.

WEll in my family, on my mom's side the longest I have seen is about APL. My dadside probably CBL or SL. However, I heard that my paternal grandmothers hair was BSL. I never met her!

On my mom's side my grandmother had wsl hair now she has a twa. my mom has 4 sisters - the hair ranges from el - wsl. Very healthy hair practices.

On my dad's side :nono:- my grandmother has twa. my aunt - i have no idea she always wears weaves. I'm going to assume it's no past sl though. it never has been even when she had a jheri curl.

My hair is in between sl-apl. Hopefully, full apl by Feb., 2009:look:

Mom's side beautiful long and thick heads of hair; dad's side --nothing. I take after my dad :ohwell: So it's half and half in my fam, but I didn't get anything from mom. Part of my reason for growing out my hair is that I want to prove to her that my hair can grow too. She is type 3B and she is convinced that type 4 hair can't grow, especially mine. It's never been longer than armpit as a child and certainly nowhere near that as an adult. Anyway ...

I have to agree with all of that ^. My great grandmother could sit on her hair, my mom went from shaving her hair low and wearing a little curly short style to past BSL in 2 years. BUt I too took after my dad NO long hair on that side. Nothing past shoulder length.

Yes, between both sides the women in my family had/have long hair. There are women also who have hair that grows really really slow, but my sister grew her hair to almost APL when she was in college. She just let it go..and her hair grows slow. On ther other hand my sister, cousins, aunts, have/had hair from APL TO MBL. Most of them keep their hair really really short. My mom hasn't worn her hair long in ages. She takes really good care of her hair but she keeps it cut short. The "men" on my dad's side of the family have/had long hair too.

I'd say it's a combo of genetics and proper care. Both sides of my family, men AND women have long hair but there are some w/a teaspoon as well. It's about caring for, and maintaining what you grow.

I am with you 100% here. Right now, I probably have the longest hair in my family. On my father's side, our paternal great, great grandfather (five generations back-is white) - so, we all pulled from the same gene pool up until our mommies. My cousins do not take care of their hair. Their eyes glaze over when I try to give them tips, so I don't do it.

On my mother's side, our great grandmother was probably of mixed ancestry. Many of them have green eyes, light brown eyes, blue eyes, etc and I say that only to indicate that they too are pulling from a recently mixed gene pool. None of them have long hair. They cut it, put too much heat and color and tightly braid it, etc.

So this long, struggling post of mine is really to just support in my own way, what
Eisiani said.

Just make the changes and try. I think the biggest adjustment is believing that you can have long hair. Once you make that paradigm/mind shift, you will seek out and do things that will get you there, including - not giving up and cutting when in doubt.

Yes and no... All of them have the capability to grow long hair they just dont know how to maintain it. Before the family stylist got sick EVERYONES hair was APL or longer. After she coudlnt do hair anymore those who relied SOLELY on her slowly lost their hair. Now many of them are only barely shoulder.

Long hair runs on my daddy's side, but not my mother's. My daddy's sister is brastrap length and my grandma's hair was pretty long also.

Long hair might run in my family. My mom's and sister's hair is about APL (but I don't personally consider that to be long), but NO ONE else in my family, that I know of, has or ever had hair longer than that. I wonder how much longer theirs would be if they took care of it better.

Wow. How depressing.

On my moms side, Just about everyone doesnt even have shoulder/neck length hair and has damaged short hair, or short hair cuts or weaves.

Theres one family member with BSL hair ( A somewhat distant cousin), everyone says it always been long, and her daughter has hair about the same

Theres 2 others, both not all black ( Hate to go there, but they have hair texture around the 2's, so i am assuming their hair required less care as far as moisture and all that and was less brittle/dry, thus easier to retain length), and one of their daughters, who's about 25% black (again, sorry to go there :ohwell:)

Then, on my dads side most are shoulderlength, a couple with APL.

I'm the person with the longest hair (APL). My female relatives all have short hair, but I think it's because they don't take proper care of their hair.

On my mom's side, they generally have very long hair despite a few bad hair care practices. My mom's hair grows ridiculously fast and the longest its ever been is a little past midback. I also have several aunts and male relatives who have long hair, with some as long as tailbone length. My dad also has long hair or did at one point.

It's impossible to say because most in my family don't take proper care of their hair so who knows how long it can really grow?

Currently, I am the only person in my family with "long" hair.

My mother's side I know they HAVE the potential to have long hair, but all my aunties have short little pixie cuts, it grows pretty fast though, my mom for example constantly cuts her hair ad it grows back in a matter of weeks.

I'm not too sure about my dad because they're all men lol... and all the women are older and cut their hair short.. but no one wears weaves and their hair is pretty healthy at the length is it, so hopefully my 'genes' allow me to grow long hair lol

On my moms side, everyone has "good hair". They used to have long hair, but after years of neglect, all of their hair is SL or above. My dad has gorgeous hair, but all of his kids have regular ol' "nappy" hair-including me :perplexed It was hard growing up in a house full of shiny waves and spiral curls. But now that I know how to properly care for my hair, I LOVE it!

Oh, to answer your question: Yes, people on my moms side DID have long hair. But I never did. The "good hair" gene skipped right on past me

Not in mine. I haven't seen anyone grow past the base of the neck...oh except my neice when she was 7, but it has not been past her neck since she was 10.:nono:

Nope my and my daughters hair is the longest. When my daughters hair started growing that cousin that i had. She was quick to point out that it was long but thin though. She did this when ever someone said my childs hair looked nice.

yep well my moms side we all had RAGING fast growing hair. but then my mom had to ruin mines with a stupid random perm but irecovered. (thanks granny) smh.

then AGAIN iwas forced to get another relaxer behind my grannys back =/ this time its taking forever to get back on track.. ahh iwould have maintained hair dwn my backside like my cousins to this daay had it not been for my mom trying to step in and "experiment" on me -__-

idont know much about my dads side but his daughter has GORGEOUS hair(: shes half filipino and her hair is long&thick. shes only 7 with this kinda hair.. im not even exaggerating.

on my mother's side everyone has long hair. On my father's side i only know of my grandmother and she has had no hair since i've known her. Thankfully i inherited my thick hair from my mother's side. lol

Giiirlll!!!!! Same hair only my gran on my dads side has always been bald because Alopecia runs on my dad's side of the family my cousins in their 20's and 30's some are bald ya'll I prayyyyyyy I inherited my mothers hair as everybody on my moms side has long hair.

On both side of my family, my mom and sister and grand mother all have long apl hair, and my aunt on my dad's side has been called a lioness because of her hair. I am the odd man out, and I think it's because of damage that I did to my hair. I used to have long hair when I was younger, I can't wait until I can go to a salon with my mom and sister and not have people look at me with the 'what happened to you?' face.

Now that I think of it, I don't think so. No one on my mom's side of the family has hair beyond SL and even then it's in pretty bad shape. But they give me the side eye b/c I'm transitioning. Hey...at least my hair is healthy. My dad's side is another story. My g-ma was Creole and my g-pa was Irish so everyone has BSL and beyond hair. All the men still have thick curly heads of hair. SO jealous but I'll get there soon :yep:

on my dads side: nope.

on my mom's side: kinda?? i never met my grandmother, but from pics, it was thick and healthy, but about SL. my great grandmother might have had long hair, i think i saw it in a pic once...but IRL her hair was always in a bun or pinned plaits so im not sure. my mom's hair was a little longer than apl before i chopped it. my aunt always had long thick healthy lush hair from as a kid from the pics i saw...i dont remember her hair as an adult besides the locs she's had for about 10yrs...she keeps them at apl...and when i was younger b4 i ever had a relaxer my hair was long...idk if any1 in my fam ever had bsl/mbl/wl hair though...just past sl and apl (which most ppl off the boards think is long...i used to.)
