Lack of knowledge is a KILLER!

I use to think it was impossible for me to gain length, but when I think about it, I'm suprised I have ANY hair! My mom had no idea what in the world she was doing when she "took care" of my hair. Everytime I got a perm she'd relax my hair from the roots to the end

lmfaooo! Ohhhh myy goodness I'mma slap her when she gets home. I just thought about it. Then I use to spray a little Isoplus Oil sheen on my hair calling my self "moisturizing it". Those two factors alone probably hendered my hair health in themselves. I have a lot to recover from. Not mentioning flat ironing everyday, using the wrong hair tools, too tight braids, and harsh products. Gosh MOM

Man, my hair is so damaged I might just get all my relaxed hair cut off and grow it out from there. Whew

Pray for me yall! And continue to learn learn learn ..because the lack of knowledge is a KILLER!

Girl I know what you mean. When I was younger my mom did the same thing, then one day I said I think I just want my roots relaxed not knowing that, that was how a relaxer was supossed to be applied anyway. I dont know how I still have thick shoulder length hair either. For years now Ive only been going to the salon for any chemical process. I was so mad at my mom when I started reading these boards. Imagine I could have reached and trippled my elbow length hair goal years ago.

lol I feel the same way. I can't get mad at her, that's what she was taught -- well thought, rather. When she was younger they didn't use nothing but rollers and grease. The only thing that gets me is her hair still manages to be longer and healthier than mine

You can't blame her because as Inyanla Vanzant says:"When you know better, you do better"

I think all of our poor Moms are guilty of this in one form or another. This is embarrasing to admit, but when I was a kid, my Mom would yell at me and say that my perms didn't "last" because I didn't take care of my hair. Umm... how is a child supposed to know how to take care of their hair if they've never been taught? And the "not lasting"? It was actually my new growth coming in.

But she gets a pass because she just didn't know any better.

oh dont get me wrong. I didnt get directly mad at her or even say anything to her, I was just mad at the situation. Growing strong healthy hair is hard enough as it is. Im gald that were are all learning know through this community. Passing along tips to our mothers and others too is helpful.

Yup, I've tried telling my mom about hair care but she's a routine person. She likes the same methods, same products, same everything. Plus she's skeptikal becaue she doesn't think anything will work. I "have" my dad's type of hair which is harder to maintain than my mom's hair gene. When I reach my goal I think that'll be an inspiration and proof that different things work.

From the jerry curl to a relaxer to finger waves (and all other styles using EXCESSIVE amounts of gel) to braids to weaves, my hair has been a laboratory for style experiments. Anything to keep my mother from having to get it done regularly. I am blessed now that I know better and excited to think about my hair's growth potential. I have NEVER had hair that reached anywhere NEAR my shoulders. I will be happy with just that.

That's the truth! I think the biggest thing that ruined me from having hair well past my shoulders was just the belief that I did not have "good" hair. My parents are southern and when growing up, I always heard this expression thrown around, and usually not about me. I just thought short hair was my lot in life. So, I abused it all the while it was growing. So, when it got cut, I was like, my hair's not going to grow anyway! Duh! My hair could be so long now if I knew then what I know now. When it was at its healthiest, I let a SHS keep cutting with every retouch even though I did not need it. I am still young, but I am WAY too old for that not speaking up stuff, too! No longer am I afraid to defend my hair

("how much do you think needs to be taken off, oh, that is too much oil, let me see how much you are going to put on, not a lot of hairspray please, I like movement, no, I am not getting a trim today")--and now that I know how to treat it better, thanks to the forum, it's on!

I can agree with all of you ladies. My mother used to relax my hair from roots to ends too. And still wondering why my hair would break off. I sometimes think how was it possible that I had still hair on my head? Since the beginning of this year I begin to take hair of my hair. I know it's in my own hands and I can do it. I love this board because I 've learned a lot and I am still learning.
