And this is suppose to be a bad thing?? *sigh*, I am natural and I love being this way...I do not miss my relaxers days at all.

My hair is soft, cottony, sparkly, manageable, sexy as all get out and (gasp)a joy to comb ...most importantly, it is mine, original, as my creator intended and I love it /images/graemlins/rosebud.gif

My answer is oure vanity! I DO NOT want to cut all my hair off!!! I want long hair and I'd just be tripping myself up if I cut it off now. And before anyone suggests it I cannot just do the two textures thing until it gets some length my hair would be parachuting off my head with breakage. Sad, but true /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hi Cici,

That password works, but fotki is case sensative. Did you capitalize the "Y"? It took me a couple of tries to realize that's why I could not see some other people's albums.

Let me know if you still can't get in.

Thank you, Nita. /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

Girl your hair is looking beautiful...both your twists and your press and curl! Your pressed hair looks straighter than most relaxed heads I see. Very pretty!

Brighteyes, I just took a peek at your album. Girl your is BEAUTIFUL!! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am glad to hear that you are happy with your natural hair and are working it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

In terms of my original post, going natural is a bad thing for me because my hair does not look good when its not straight. Unlike you, I have unmanageable coarse hair that is very tightly coiled at root. As such, going natural, is not an option for me cause I would be looking a mess. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had a trained mind, plain and simple. All the beautiful Black women I saw had long straight hair with the exception of Jada and Halle. So I figured this is the way I had to be in order to be attractive. I didn't dislike my natural hair because I only had seen pictures and even then it was full and pretty. Besides, If I was so pretty naturally, then why would my Mom perm me at the age of nine? /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

But I learned that my hair was different from non-Blacks and therefore it made no sense to consistently try to emulate styles that were not made for my hair. Just because it's in a Black hair magazine doesn't mean that it's made to work WITH your hair. Plus I didn't like the idea that relaxers and Drano have the same chemicals.

After doing some reading and soul searching I realized that it's ok if I can't comb my hair with a utensil that is not made for me anyway. I realized that I was judging myself based on standards that were not created with me in mind to start with. That is something I never realized before. Who says you have to be able to comb your hair (with a skinny comb) with great ease? The first combs they found in West Africa were made with 4 or 5 teeth. I think that's saying something right there. Who says that your hair has to be flat? Who says that your hair has to be shinny and blow in the wind? When I asked myself those questions I didn't like the answer at all.

Wow Brighteyes, so, so true!!

Thanks nita4, armyqt, and sweetcocoa! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh and elliot, I am a 4a too and my hair is not unmanagable at all. There is no such thing. If a Black women could hook 4a/b hair up 2000 years ago with some oil, and her hands, we certainly can! /images/graemlins/grin.gif If you decide you want your natural hair to look good, then it will. Period.

no, and i didn't really think i needed a reason. umm... okay... "because i like it this way..." /images/graemlins/smile.gif

i have no problem with either. i have been natural more years than relaxed. i've gone as long as 9 months without a retouch. it don't make no nevah mind...

I was thinking about this question and how to answer it. I started perming my hair since I was 18 and until 30, I stopped then I have periods of being natural and relaxed, or texturiser until, last February, I started my natural journey. The funny thing is that when I had my hair relaxed or texturised, my hair was always one length chin, length, it wouldn't get any longer. Now that it natural for a year now. It's about chin length, but when I stretch the strands, it is passed my chin and my back hair, is passed my nape. It is the thickest, it has ever been, taking the supplements helps. But also the growth has improved. I admire Adrienne and many other of the ladies are on this board and have long beautiful relaxed hair, which is so thick. But for me, it is easier looking after my hair when it is natural. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

/images/graemlins/smile.gif So true. Natural hair is so versatile, more (IMO) than relaxed hair. Working with natural hair is time comsuming but it isn't hard. Some of the best styles I've hooked myself up with have been when I was natural.

Thanks Pandora!

This is a good thread.

I'm natural now, but I can tell you why I didn't go natural until the end of high school.

<img src="/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif" alt="" />

When I asked myself those questions I didn't like the answer at all.

I wear my hair straight sometimes for the hell of it, but even now if feels unnatural. It's a very odd feeling when I wear a press and curl no, like something is missing. But I can't see myself being 80 years old and getting a touch-up. Besides two-strand twists and comb coils do not work on straight hair. And those are my favorite styles!!!!

My hair is fine and it rarely breaks off because I know that I'm doing when I style it. I don't accept what my old stylist told me about natural nappy hair not being able to grow long. I have seen pictures that say otherwise. Black women had long hair before the hot comb or chemicals, and this fact has not vanished. It has simply been distorted so that hairdressers and relaxer companies can thrive. If no one believed that they needed a perm, they'd be out on their butts. So they feed that notion to use everyday.

Last year from April to November I didn't relax. Transitioning during the hot months I was able to pull it off by wearing cornrows, but come September I wanted to wear my doobie which I could not do, my hair would not wrap..basically I was still trying to wear relaxed styles with natural hair and it did NOT work, I would get it pressed and that would last for say......3 minutes! and even pressed it was thin and lifeless, didn't work for me.

My natural hair is thick thick thick and wavy. I remember growing up and how hard it was to handle, so I always wound up with 2 fat ponytails (i hated it). And what I hated even more was my grandmother putting vaseline in my hair. When I got my first relaxer, I was about 12 and my mom did it, I was in love. It was long, still thick but manageable. Heck, I could do it myself with no problem. Needless to say, ever since then, I've been relaxed.

The one reason I'm not natural is b/c I don't know if I can handle or style my natural hair. As a child I sat thru hrs of agony when my cousin would style my hair and my hair would break combs and brushes. I'm relaxed now, but I am learning how to be able to style natural hair so I can gradually rid myself of my relaxed ends. That is my goal for the next... however long it takes.... ;-D

I dont think I'll ever transition because I just like straight hair?? I also know that if I did transistioned I would press to make my hair straight. Relaxing is just easier for the look I like.
