Is wrapping your hair at nite good or bad?

I heard that wrapping your hair at nite is good but I later was told that it can cause thinning. I'm trying to find a new nite time ritual for my hair. I faithfully cover my hair with a silk scarf but my dilema is that I don't know what the best thing to do with my hair while it's under the silk scarf. Any suggestions? What works best for you?

I have been wrapping my hair for years. I honestly don't remember what I did before it. Rollers? I have not seen any ill effects of wrapping my hair. What I do is vary the side I wrap my hair to. Of course I sleep with a satin hair scarf. If I did not wrap my hair would me a serious mess.

I've been wrapping my hair for years as well. I haven't noticed anything negative due to wrapping. I have been told that when wrapping your hair, it's always good to rotate the way you wrap from time to time to avoid the thinning you've mentioned.

I use 2 silk/satin scrunciis at night, also in the day sometimes. I finger comb my hair in a loose high pony tail with 1 scruncii, then take the remaining hair and wrap it around in a ball, then secure with the other scruncii. Then put my scarf on "aunt jemima" style, so the knot/tie won't cause breakage on my nape area. I don't like to "wrap" my hair at night, b/c i don't like how it sticks to one side and it's painful to "unstick" my hair. Yes, I'm tender headed.

I too am wearing my scarf "aunt jemima" style since my knot already caused nape area breakage.

i just started wrapping my hair with a satin bonnet instead of a scarf. that way i can avoid breakage in the nape area and also my hair has more body in the morning, since it wasn't smushed down flat against my head all night.

I agree

I am one who experienced thinning of the sides due to wrapping. I'd wrap my hair once a day at night with a soft brush or just a comb. my edges and nape paid for it too

I do believe that some people's hairs are stronger than others and thats why it doesn't cause thinning on some people. I'd like to add that my hair is much thicker since I stopped wrapping. Please see my album for pics.

Well, I've been wrapping my hair for years, and it wasn't until 2 years ago that someone told me that I should rotate it every day. I have been wrapping my hair to the left for about 10 years, and now I finally know the reason why my right side is much thinner than the left. I would recommend that you just rotate wrapping your hair every night, and you should be fine. Otherwise than that, my hair has responded very well to wrapping.

I wrap my hair every night and my ends are not thinning at all. Probably try wrapping loosely and not tight.

I used to wrap my hair every night but stopped because the nape area started breaking. I think this was now caused because always used to wrap too tightly & I used to wrap in the same direction.

Wrapping works very well for me but I no longer use a scarf as Keisha Gurl says. I turn my satin bonnet inside out, so the elastic can be on the outside and use that to cover my head at night. I sleep on a satin pillowcase just in case the bonnet comes off. I ALWAYS change the direction of the wrap every two days.

I was told if you have a problem with thinning, you shouldn't wrap your hair all the time.

I am bout to invest in a soft bonnet, I think wrapping then tieing it down, which the scarf shiffs alot which causes the hair to move which might cause breakage, that is how I see things

I've been wrapping my hair every night since Jan. and it actually grew. My hairdresser is a firm believer in wrapping hair. Anytime I am at home cooking, watching tv, etc. she wants it wrapped. "As soon as you walk into the door!" as she puts it. Since I've been doing it her way it has been easier to maintain and I wrap it the same way every night. It think the key to my hair being thicker and longer is that I spray Surge on my hairs then wrap it.

I wrapped my hair in one direction for about 4 years, and the side that I pulled across started to get thinner than the other side.

I stopped wrapping, and now I either put my hair in a ponytail/bun, or just tie the scarf over it (and sleep on a silk pillowcase).

The thinning was no longer noticable after about a month of not wrapping, so this works better for me

all this talk about it making your hair thin has shaken me up a lil bit, so today i invested in one of those bonnets w/ the drawstring that keeps it from slipping off.

I also have trouble with the bonnet. I like the way the scarf makes my "edges" lay flat and the bonnet doesn't do that for me. Yes, the satin scarf does slip off sometimes, but I use a very large scarf so I can tuck and wrap it around a couple of times and like many of you, I sleep on a satin pillow case just in case it slips off.

Has any one tried those preconditioning scarfs? I tried it while ago and they work excellent. I should go out and get some more <counting my funds> So, it seems like the best thing to do is to rotate the wrap. That's interesting. I will definitely start doing that. I think I will stick with the scarf though. I tried the bonnet before and I always had on outline on my forehead from the bonnet's elastic when I would wake up.

I've been wrapping in the same direction for years and like pet says my right side is thinner than the left. (I wrap to the left) My back is just gone I think that is b/c of the constant wrapping and harsh chemicals.

I plan to wrap for the first 4 weeks after a touch-up and high pony the second 4 weeks. Less stress on the hair, trying to wrap new growth is no joke. I touch-up every eight weeks.

Is silk better than satin for your hair??? I have a satin scarf but Im wondering where can u get a silk bonnet or silk scarf???

I've been wrapping for the last 4 months and I haven't had any problems. I change directions every couple of days and I sleep with a satin scarf. Once I have too much new growth I dont wrap due to breakage from combing, so I do bantu knots and tie up with my scarf and wear a curly up do pinned up with bobby pins so I dont have to manipulate my hair

I've been wrapping my hair for years and it is thin. I'm not sure if it is because of the wrapping or if that is just my hair type. I wanted to find some alternatives to wrapping to see if my hair will thicken up.

I used to put my hair in two bantu style loose knots and pin them or ponytail and pins the ends down to keep them straight, but I've started wrapping again and each night I change directions. I haven't noticed any thinning, but I don't wrap tightly and I only used abou 5 or 6 pins and space them far apart. The back of my hair as actually started to thicken since wrapping, but considering everyone's experience with wrapping I will alternate 2 a week with something different like ponytail or my old bantu style knots. Also I don't wrap my hair if my new growth isn't straight.
