Is 2 1/2 inches in 9 months average or is there something wrong? That's all I've gained and I gained that back in Feb so now I'm at shoulder lenth or slightly passed and it seems my hair has stopped right there. Any advice on what could be going on? Is this the longest it is going to grow? Or is more time required? It seems to be breaking and shedding a little but that's about all. I wear a phony pony everyday and wash twice a week as well as deep condition and that's all. If this helps I think my hair type is 4a/b but I'm not sure.
Thanks in advance.

hmm.. you should get that length in 5 months not 9. something is going but since it isn't breakage i don't know what to tell you.

Sounds like something is wrong, have you done a good protein treatment? How has your health & diet been? But then again some peoples hair grow like that and then all of sudden it takes off, I am sure someone will be here to point you in the right direction, What products do you use?

It could be the resting period for your hair...my hair doesn't grow very long during the summer...but when the winter comes, it seems like I have an inch a month. But you said it was nine months which does seem a bit long...you might want to consider a dermatologist. :perplexed

I would say it is something internal or lack thereof.

Are you anemic, do you drink lots of water and eat a healthy diet, do you excercise...any medical conditions??? These are some questions I would ask myself...and as someone said a dermatologist might be a good idea, especially if all the other things are done/okay.

Do you keep your ends protected under the phony pony? Is there a comb or a pull string attachment that could be rubbing against your hair and snagging the ends?

Also, how often are you using heat in your hair?

I doubt that your hair has stopped growing, it sounds like you're not retaining length.

Hi ladies.
I'm not sure what protein is and when or how to use it. I'm kind of afraid of it. Health wise I have a condition called PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), I'm not sure if that effects my hair growth. My diet could be better. I was not a big water drinker, but recently I started drinking at least six 8 oz glasses a day. I exercise, but not like I should. I haven't been able to find a dermatologist for african american skin in my area of Fort Worth and I don't know how to get to Dallas on my on. I do keep my ends protected at all times with the baggie method or tucked under when I'm home. I use heat about every 3 months or so to straigthen my hair. I use Keracare 1st later shampoo,Sauve Humectant conditioner, ORS Hair Mayo and ORS Replenshing pak, a mixture of coconut oil, wgo, kemi oyl & Jojoba oil, Rusk Smoothers conditoner,NTM silk touch and Frizz Ease. I appericate all the replies if anyone one can help anymore please do.

keracare 1st poo should only be used every 4-6 weeks or so..its too harsh to use often

switch it to keracare hydrating shampoo hun

try and do con washes to speed up growth, (week one: shampoo and deep condition, week 2. conditiner wash week 3. shampoo and week 4 - conditioner wash)

take biotin and also vitamin b supplements...

and try not to comb your hair too often, detangle with your fingers

if you want alternatives to vitamins, try bumping up your protein intake, get some eggs down you, and some whey/soy protein milkshakes too.

my recommendations is working from the inside out, and i think any illness can impact hair growth...esp if you take medications too. ask your doctor if there are any vitamins you could use to replace the medication.

good luck

I feel like we're forgetting the fact that the average growth per month is .5 inches. I only get 3/8 of an inch/month, so it takes me 3 months to get a full inch. So it would take me about 7 months to get 2.5. Maybe your hair grows at a slower rate than the average AND some seasons your hair grows slower than others. So there is a possibility that this is right.

Candy, that was great advice. Whenever I research faster hair growth, this is the #1 recommendation--a well-balanced diet with lots of protein, fruits, veggies, and water.

youre right, it may be quinettes natural hair growth pattern..my natural patter is the usual 1/2 inch per month, sometimes a quarter. but with bonuses such as vits and techniques, this can skyrocket to anything from 1inch - 2 inches a month i've seen in my time on the board.

The ladies here have given you GREAT advice. My two cents is this: STOP WEARING PHONY PONIES EVERYDAY!!! I had a period when I LOVED me some phony ponies. I wore them everyday for about 3 months straight. That was about 1 year and a half ago. My hair is just now starting to shape itself back up. The teeth in the comb of the phony will break your hair. Everytime you pull that drawstring you are clinching that tooth attachment right at the base of your hair. By doing it EVERYDAY, you are basically ripping your hair out,and if it doesn't rip out, the tension being out on it makes it break off. I learned that the hard way. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with phony ponies. It's wearing them EVERYDAY that leads to the problem.Just my two cents. :D

Oh, and don't be afraid of protein!!An easy way to get some is to just crack and egg, beat it, and slather on you hair. You can also mix it with a little cholesterol if you wish. I just did that today and sat under the dryer for about 20 minutes, rinsed and deep conditoned under the dryer for another 30 min and I already feel a difference. Hope that helps!!

I don't think it is all that bad, personally. Just think if you average 1/4 inch of NG a month, as many people actually do. Even if you retain ALL of that, it would not even be 2 1/2 inches in 9 months (If my math is right that would only be 2 1/4 inches in 9 months)

Has your hair grown faster than that in the past? If not, I would not worry about it and enjoy those inches girl! :)

If you are not into growth aids you may have to just let your hair have a long journey. You can always use aids, but I presently think they are not always the answer.

Although I do not have PCOS, I know that it does affect hair growth. Here is a forum dedicated to women who have it:

ITA. Right now I'm about 14 weeks post and probably only about an inch of growth(that's with washing 1x/wk). That's normal for me.

Candy C-Thanks for the advice. I forgot to add Creme of Nature with the green label. I use this to wash weekly. I use the Keracare every other week , but I will take your advice and cut down on that. I've wanted to take biotin, I actually even bought some, but because of my PCOS I was afraid it would make other hair grow in faster and thicker. That could be silly, but I wasn't sure. I have a doctor's appt soon and I am going to ask if would be okay.

lizjoseph-Thank you for the advice about the phony pony. I didn't realize it could be causing damage. I just don't know how else to style my hair. I use to braid it but, last time I had braids was back in december and that seems to be when my hair stopped growing. I don't know how to rollerset and it's not thick enough for a bun and if I use a sock or a foam bun inside then it's not thick enough or long enough to cover in some spots. My husband likes for me to wear it down but when I do as soon I step out the door it swells up and I look a hot mess. My grandmother insist on clipping my ends and most times I humor her because she is my grandmother and she feels she knows best. Should I stop that?

Thanks to rest of the ladies for your input. I am truly greatful to know a group of women who are willing to help each other freely without wanting anything in return.:)
