AT MY WITS END, HELP CREATING A REGIMEN FOR NATURAL 4B HAIR

Clarifying poos are stripping. They get the build up off your hair. You should be using a moisturizing poo preferably a non SLS one if you use poo at all.

Thanks glam...I guess since i only poo 1 every 3-4 months or so..i figured ill clarify to remove all the build up...now i know i actually have to poo more often with a moisturising poo....do u have any recs? im not sure if Kenra makes a moisturising poo or not.

I put it on top of the wig's line and leave some of my edges showing. If that doesn't work you can try using a scarf as a headband.

Ok Ive never tried it....I was just imagining (is that a word? lol) that it might poke up if i use the sturdy headbands which I prefer cos then i dont have to worry about tying a scarf in the back...(i dont want the knot rubbing against that middle nape area)...but if it doesnt work then i might have to get the cloth headbands that go all the way around w/o me having to tie...hope it works:)

Cowash daily. Flat twist hair and wear a half wig.

can u Pm what kinda half wig u use? also what do u use to cowash and what u use to seal in the moisture afterwards?

You said you are protein sensitive but you also said that you use hard proteins.
My hair only likes silk protein. So perhaps you should try changing to Silk Amino Acids for a while and eliminate the harder ones and the cholesterol might be disagreeable to your hair. Try ors replenishing for deep conditioning. It is a light protein but its mostly moisturizing.

Olive Oil tends to make hair hard. I agree with switching to coconut oil or castor oil.

And you may need to increase your external & internal moisture.

yea Mook, i didnt realize M&T had protein in it....i thought it was a moist condish and i would always mix it with EVOO too:( the Lekair, i knew was a protein but i thought it was a moisturising poo...
Do u order ur SAA from lotioncrafters.com? in regards to the ORS, do u mean the replenish paks?

Hi there Scarcity,

I just wanted to provide a few quick tips:

1) I used to get those darn knots in my hair and my hair also EASILY locks if I am not careful. It sounds like your hair could really use a lot of moisture. I recommend Shea Moisture Leave In (this is THE BEST leave in I have ever ever used...it will leave your hair super soft and moisturized and prevent those knots)

Thanks gurl, what does it look like?

2) Only comb your hair when soaked with conditioner and use your fingers first and then a wide tooth or a Denman brush.

3) Also I agree that you should definitely watch your diet. Eat foods rich in iron instead of taking so many pills. That will keep you from getting constipated.
I m taking the pills bcos my doctor prescribed them and they want to check my blood in 3 months...Im going next month, so Im praying and hoping it went up so I can stop taking the supplement and just eat iron rich foods...as of now, Ill take the supps and eat iron rich food too:)

4) I recommend No Poo shampoo by Deva Curl, Creme of Nature Ultra Moisturze Shampoo and / or doing conditioner washes. I recommend condition washing with a moisturizing conditioner at least once or twice a week. You may be getting too much protein.

where can u get the deva curl from? what color is the CON moist poo? they have so many out there its confusing...Actually CON was the reason i cut down pooing to once every 3-4 months...i had just gotten outta braids and i used the green CON and major setback...dreds...masive tangles...i know it was prob a combination of not detangling but it scared me silly cos it happened twice b4 i decided to stop the foolishness... what condish do u recommend for cowashes?

5) If you eat a lot of sugar, cut it drastically and replace with sweat fruits, yogurt and other substitutes that still give you your fix without being unhealthy. I am finding that sugar may actually stunt hair growth.

I hope these tips help.

- winniebread

Thank you so much for the tips:)

Wow, thanks for your all your suggestions....I still have to check out ur blog:)
Do u recommend using the egg and aloe vera bcos of the breakage/shedding? My hair is protein senstive but i think i need a protein treatment due to the shedding/ breaking.

Is this pomade supposed to be for my bald spots?

You can use them on your spots, the pomade because you can use on your roots, the egg, and aloe vera gel can be used to stop the breaking.

thanks...is the Organic rose water enough to moisturise ur hair?
It works like a dream and I have been using this for about 2 years now. It is a humectant so also draws moisture to your hair. One of my friends has just been using it for the last 3 or 4 months and she loves it. Also she just relaxed her hair last week after a 14 month stretch. She said that the hair does not feel dry at all as the rosewater is so moisturising. Some people add vegetaable glycerin to theirs but I find it works fine on its own

Scarcity you can get the DevaCurl from BeautyFirst. There's one in the shopping center on Reisterstown Road where the Trader Joes is.

I mean do you really use heavy products on your hair like that to warrant clarifying? Are your products heavy in cones? If not, I don't think you need to clarify that often. I can't even remember the last time I clarified my hair. I don't do it regularly anymore. Once I started steering clear of products with nono ingredients I didn't feel the need to anymore. I try to steer clear of mineral oil, petrolatum and cones. Mainly the cones because they were causing build up and dry hair after using them over time (like those Herbal Essences products :nono:) It would seem like they were working good at first but then my hair felt coated and dry. Now that I think about it the mineral oil did the same thing. My hair would feel fine at first with the product and then maybe the next day or so it was dry like my hair sucked it all up. My dcs weren't getting through either.

I'm not sure about Kenra's products but they should have a moisturizing shampoo. I've been using Elasta QP's Creme Conditioning Shampoo for a while. Their line recommended it for natural hair. It does not contain SLS or mineral oil. A lot of shampoos make my hair feel stripped as I'm washing. It's the SLS. I will admit the shampoo does have a funny smell to it to me but once you wash it out the smell is gone. It's relatively inexpensive too. You can find it at the BSS for maybe $3-$5 a bottle. I usually use that and follow up with DPR-11 to DC.

I've also used the DevaCurl No Poo that somebody else mentioned. I liked it but it wasn't fantastic. It's a little on the pricey side. They do have sample sized bottles you can buy for a few bucks a piece if you want to try it out before committing to the full sized bottle though. I really liked the One Condition Conditioner though.

ETA: Also, Deva also has a line called DevaCare for color treated hair that's supposed to be more moisturizing than the DevaCurl line but I haven't tried it myself to compare.

i have been natural for 4yrs now and it seems like my hair is at a standstill, i need help creating a regimen that will create visible results.
I DC once a week with either lekair cholesterol or mane and tail condish +nexxuse ensure+EVOO. I poo once every 3-4 months, dust every 4 months or so, have only straightened twice (last flat iron was 12/2007). After DCing, i 2 strand twist with moisturising gel and scurl spray, leave the twists in for 3-4 days and wear a twist out for 2-3 days, repeat the whole cycle.
For the last 2 months, i did notice an increase in shedding/breaking, so I did an emergence last month....followed by a moist DC. still some shedding evident.
The middle nape that Im always writing about (W-shape) doesnt seem to be improving, so when I wear a twist out, I have to apply moisture/water to left and right nape areas( about 8 inches but shrinks to 3 inches) inorder to shrink the hair there to blend in with the shorter middle nape(2-3 inches).
I used to be in micros (leave in 4-6 weeks) for the past 2-3 yrs and it helped me retain growth, but the last 2 times I did it last year june and september...I noticed bald spots( Not sure what caused it but i suspected it was keratin protein, I was using VS so sexy condish that had Keratin protein, but would leave in without washing out) .This is the reason I decided not to do braids this whole year...( cos im not certain of the cause of the bald spots, the VS condish is just a guess) Im trying...dont know if Ill be able to do it....now im thinking about doing a weave....i do not know what to do:(

My hair is not long enough to bun without adding phony pony....Itried using a phony pony for a couple months earlier this year but I got tired of it.

I had a similar problem.
I am natural 4A/4B and i thought my hair had come to a standstill. For me the key was a no/low manipulation reggie.( i wore weaves)

DC''s

I have never used nexxus, i'm not sure what it is, but your DC sounds like a lot of protein plus i just dislike LeKair's products.

Lustrasilk Shea butter chloesterol
Elasta QP Intense conditioner

Mix honey, melted shea butter or any oil of your choice such as coconut or Evoo and coconut milk. As a DC

I'm sorry i can't think of any other DC's that are available in the US that i have used.

I've heard great things about motions moisture plus
also ORS replenishing is great as well

Moisture

Rosewater/Glycerine
It comes pre mixed here, but its great for moisturising, then i use a creamy leave in or leave it just like that. and then a thick butter for my ends ( this is for twists, It sounds like a lot but a week later after taking out my twists my hair was still moisturised)

Is your hair fine? Mine is and i need protein. I was neglecting it and my hair suffered for it. I was cowashing and using a lot of hair creams and my hair became over moisturised. I like Aphogee 2 minute.

I'm not sure about cowashing frequently. I used to cowash every day and frankly it didn't help me retain length to be honest. I think low manipulation is best for us type 4s to be honest.

Also do use heat to DC? Once i started using heat, my hair took off. I have one of those dryer attachement things.

But anyway
I agree with the OP, i think that may be too much manipulation. Try wearing your twists for 2 weeks.
Protective styles with Fake Hair
You could make your own stocking cap wig, there are many tutorials on youtube and online and its not actually that hard. You could make a nappy one, push it back a little and use your edges to cover the edge of the stocking cap.

Get some afro kinky hair. The type used for kinky twists. First brush out the hair(its in bulk)
Then section your hair, leaving out your edges, back and sides (quite a lot)
Do you know how to braid? It doesn't have to be neat or anything because no one will see it. Braid the middle of your hair using the afro kinky hair, not all the way down though less than halfway and leave it out.
When you pull up your hair and the weave together it will look like a big afro bun. You can put a head band on the front or gel it down or whatever.
You don't need that many braids either, depends on your length/thickness

Or you could buy some synthetic afro weave hair i know Beverley Johnson makes some its quite cheap as well. Just clip the weave (you can just use bobby pins) in the middle of your head and pull it up into a bun.

I'm sorry i haven't described the styles very well.

Thats all i can think of right now.

I love Aubrey Organics GBP once a month as a light protein treatment and have been using it since 2005. Recently I had a tiny spot of breakage in my crown and I used Aubrey Organics Blue Green Algae Hair Rescue Mask and it was fabulous but still left my hair feeling soft. I plan to use this 2 or 3 times a year.

thanks but how can i wear my hair when i go out on the weekends? i guess i may have to invest in a wig (which i dont like but will if i have to)
i try to detangle gently but sometimes i do notice little knots on the ends:(

How come you can't wear twists on the weekend? Another way to get your twists to last longer is to ad hair. You can get the Marley Braid Hair from the BSS.

Wow those were some great hairstyle ideas. Love it.

Great thread, how's your hair doing OP?

(Also bumping for newbies/those who recently BC'd, and pros to respond)

Thanks for bumping this! I may need to clarify as I've been cowashing daily becuase I've been exercising daily.
