"it's a man thing" means, you wear HIS ring, in exchange for the promise to marry him. if the engagement is called off, technically and legally you are to return it. so if he wants it bigger, well, In a way it's his choice as a symbol of what his intended wife will wear. (but we all know you're the one who has to wear it so you should be happy with it)
