In search of inspiration aka Can I really do this?

I've seen lots of pics of beautiful hair. It seems that except for those who how have done the BC most of you ladies had beginning lengths that I have never achieved. Is it really possible to achieve apl hair when I've never had shoulder length? I've rarely achieved chin length? In the past I never cared for my hair I usually become frustrated with breakage and slow growth and chop it off. Usually on the advice of hairdressers. Is there anyone out there who has overcome short, damaged, slow growing hair to achieve more length than they ever thought possible?

Thanks for the inspiration:grin:. Your hair is beautiful. It has really grown. I would love to achieve the length you have. I'll hand in there.

i keep having to remind myself to take baby steps. i have never had hair past SL and every month (it has only been 4 months since i found LHCF) i have been discouraged, but every month the proof has been in the pics and the hair just keeps a-comin. please dont obsess or do length checks everyday like i did the first two months...you know they say a watched pot never boils. just start with a SIMPLE regimen, dont hop on every bandwagon, and it will grow. you know that hair grows; focus on retention and in a few months you will revisit this thread filled with nothing but j-o-y.

what is your current regimen?

ITA a lot of us here are trying to reach lenghts we never have seen before or even know if we can achive but we try. You've commited your self to making a change and that's the important part. As lilsparkle said you may not see results right away but just be patient they will come.

I just started one after finding this site. I have committed to pre poo, washing and DC 2X a week. I have started taking a multivitamin and Biotin. I now moustrize at least once a day but am aiming for 2X a day.

I'm at the beginging of my hair journey as well. I know how you feel however please remember that anything achieved overnight can go just as quickly. We are not just here for the end result,we're on a quest for knowledge.Natural and relaxed, with every inch we grow, product we test and regimen we try we are dispelling myths that our people have grown with for generations. With every woman that achieves her goal length we are blazing a trail for our daughters so they naver have to wonder "Can I really do this".The answer indeed is a resounding Yes. I wish you a happy hair journey.

I have only started my 'haircare journey' since late March/April of this year and I am already seeing results.
Like you, I had never really taken care of my hair; also, I have never really been much past shoulder length.
I just have to keep reminding myself to be VERY PATIENT.
I have to get out of the habit of looking at my haiir in the mirror every single *ruddy* day and stretching my hair (I have 5 months of new growth)... It's like watching paint dry!
Ofcourse, you can reach APL, even if you've never been shoulder length... especially if you stop cutting your hair .
There are plently of women on the forum who have never been past shoulder length reaching APL, BSL, MBL and beyond!
I think the key is retaining the length you achieve... and I think the key to that is mosture, moisture, moisture, protein, protecting your hair and low manipulation!
Good luck, HHG and soon you'll be looking back at this post having achieved milestones you never thought you would ever reach!
Just be patient! :yep:.

Yes, it can be done. I did it. My hair had been at neck length for 25+ years. In my mind I didn't really believe I could grow my hair long but I just decided I had nothing left to lose. I thought I had slow growing hair. I really had easy-breaking hair.

Your regimen sounds good to me. Just remember your hair gets healthier over time and will be able to retain length better as long as you continue to treat it well. I am now up to the point of where I can go without pre-pooing or deep conditioning as much -- but it has been 2.5 years of constant care to get here (and also, I found products that work best for my hair but it took about a year or more of going through a lot of stuff to find them). I also found that I had to add a protein treatment every other month because my hair was damaged from relaxers.

Like ravenmerlita said, I was between neck length and shoulder length my WHOLE life. My hair is probably collarbone length and well on it's way to armpit length within the next few months. I will try and dig out some old pics of my hair when it was that length. Just be patient and consistent and you will achieve your goals :yep:

This is why we are all here, regardless of our original starting lengths. You are about to witness "miracles" over the coming, weeks, months and years if you stay committed to a regimen you can stick with and healthy hair habits.

Thank you for this inspiring post!

I have never had length or health of my hair like this in my life.

I attribute it to most of what I have learned from the Hair boards, but I have done a ton of research on this for many years now.....

First - I stopped relaxing - almost 10 years ago......

I have not used commercial shampoos in over 2 years now - and I have walked away from most commercial products in the last 18 months.....

Patience and prayer is key to healthy and long hair success IMO.
:yep: Good luck to you!

Op,

I can sympathize with your feelings. I like you never had hair past ear/chin length.

It just would not stay on my head. And during that period, allt he uplifting words did nothing for me. They sounded great, but in reality. I stillhad short hair.

I made a promise to myself to learn and take care of my hair.

So, now my family and friends with whom I grew up are amazed at my hair. (I am by no means an inspiration or even a long-haired lady, but my hair is below APL and creeping up on SBL/BSL) They always ask where i bought my hair. 'Cause I never had any growing up'

You know the joke (tired and played out as it is), 'hair so short you could roll it with rice'. That was me.

It took me 4.5 years to get where I am. Through the non-support of people who knew me and the support of people like on this board, I perservered.

It will take time and intentional effort on your part, but you can do it.

Looks like you started off with a great routine. Just keep using it and tweak it when necessary. Give it time and it will come.

My hair is short, by choice. If you look at my personal photo, you can see how short it was in April(it was farrrr shorter than that in Feb). Two months have passed, and I promise I have good results. I have take personal photos to compare, I just haven't posted them yet. I know I will be dramatically longer by December(neck length). And with that attitude, I will take care of my hair. It will happen!:yep:

oh u can def do it! the longest my hair was b4 this forum is the first pic in my siggy. and it was always dry and breaking like there was no tomorrow!! and it just takes a butt load of patience and consistency :yep:

I stated off with 3 inches of hair "flat ironed " I'm APL"not full" but very soon  before coming to LHCF I never grew hair past shoulder ...I know at times it almost felt impossible and I'm not at my final destination yet but it has been a blessing and a learning experience I would not have traded for the world. It cn be done

Welcome Alhemlet!

I never tried to really grow my hair long and I just thought that one had to have particular hair genes to reach APL/BSL before finding this board :perplexed:nono:.
Every lady on this board is an inspiration to me -regardless of their length and/or texture.

Some more fotkis that should inspire you too:
