I'm dealing with a whole "new" set of curls since giving up Denman.

FKA Pokahontas
I'm having to re-vamp my whole wash n' go regimen this summer since recently going to finger combing only and giving up my denman for my wash n' go's. Last year I had them down packed and I was so happy so I don't know how I feel about this but I'm not giving up.

Last summer I could do my wng and it would last 6-7 days no problem. Well w/o the denman my curls are totally different. They're looser and more elongated......I like the elongation (went from above apl curly w/denman to about bsl curly w/o denman!......never thought I'd see the day) but I miss the longevity and volume. I think since the denman made my curls tighter they stayed longer. I really miss the volume but I'm gonna make this work. I have to start all over again but it's worth it because I feel that finger combing will be so beneficial to me. I guess this will be a summer of experimenting, sigh.

I'm gonna try to put together some proper comparison pics soon but I'll include a pic of my hair w/o the denman. Anyway this was just a vent!

UPDATE pics on page 3!

Pretty hair. I've been wondering about finger combing. Do people get more knots with it? What about people with tighter textures??

Beautiful! I think for my hair to be that length curly, I'd have to have knee length hair LOL
I said the same exact thing until I started doing my wng's this way. I was pleasantly surprised at the difference in length. I knew it changed my curl pattern but I was in love with the way it made my curls look.

denman gives me craaaazy shrinkage! after my BC I just couldn't hang with it anymore lol. your hair is beautiful and so healthy looking :3

If finger combing keeps working for you I will have to try it.
I <3 your hair, its what mine hair wants to grow up to be!

i agree denman makes my curls tighter. but it doesnt give me more volume like it does you. i think because my hair is thin is smooths my hair down and takes out the bulk. i gave up on denman because of that.

Thanks. Yes the shrinkage is CRAZY with the denman. I also think it was pulling my hair out and causing breakage. I'm so excited to see how my hair does without it.

Thank you! I never ever thought i would go to finger detangling but I had to tweak my regimen to see if I could get more length and thickness. I think this will really help with that. Its time consuming but I'm doing really well with it so far.

Yes it shrinks my curls up so much that it makes my hair big and voluminous which is nice but I don't plan on going back to it. I lost more hair with that thing.

OMG Poka!!! Wait until after you have done it for a while....you are gonna just love it and never look back!

I actually pulled out my Denman this morning and my hair was irate! She was like "Um...excuse me?! This is not what we're doing now, mmkay?" Lol!

So i ended up re-fingercombing to get it to behave....my hair actually tangled more from using the Denman:perplexed!!!

For volume...if i want it....i just scrunch at my roots...sometimes i turn my head upside down too and scrunch that way..that helps. I do it when my hair is semi-dry tho.

Yes!....I forgot to include that the denman caused me major tangles as well. I've noticed that with finger combing/styling my hair is much less tangled.

I may try to put some clips at my roots (hate doing that lol) for some volume at the roots because that's where I notice that I lack volume the most. Also gel causes me less volume as well but it helps me get multi-day hair which is important to me sooooo.....I've got so many ideas in my head lol:spinning:

I'm having the exact same experience as you Ladies. :yep: Ever since I put down the Denman, and started finger combing (although I still use a seamless comb in the shower if I have a major detangle to do) my curls look different. I like them better now, honestly, and its not such a major headache to detangle. They do stretch longer as well. I'm still getting volume, because I bend down to scrunch in product, and I shake my hair as it dries every now and then to resettle the curls. I definitely do not get 2nd day hair, but my hair is always softer and nicer now. So, not missing that stupid Denman!

Pokahontas ...Your curls are absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Please show comparison pics. :)
I too gave up the Denman about 8 months ago and started finger combing only. It definitely makes a difference. The Denman tears and shreds my ends, although my curls were defined. When I noticed that finger combing gave even better definition w/o problems with the ends, I continued to go with it.

I thought about getting rid of my denman, but I have absolutely no clue how I would detangle without it.
Finger combing sounds interesting.

Your hair is fabulous!

MsAminta Finger combing works very well for me, and I'm a 4. I do not get more knots with this method. I've been doing it for 2-3 years.

You all must not get the knots I get. I think fingercombing might take me all day in the shower! What am I doing wrong?

Wen? That's what's been making this easy for me. I put the Wen on in 4 sections, plastic cap till around noon (when the boys are napping), finger detangle as I'm rinsing out the Wen, oil, scrunch in product, and Go. Easy peezy. :yep:

Mine gets pretty tangled cuz I usually don't detangle for a week. Pre-stretching my hair by braiding or twisting a day or 2 before wash day helps a lot. There's no way I would attempt this in the shower lol. I'd be in there so long and wasting water. I do this before shower. I take small sections, spray them down with detangler, add a slippery conditioner and go to work lol. I can take my time this way.

Thanks! I'll try to get a comparison pic up soon. I don't really have many pics with my new curls yet so I'll work on that.

I think I like my curls better now too because they hang longer. The denman made them shrink up to my shoulders sometime.

I have seamless combs as well. I mainly use them for roller sets and to wrap my hair when I do silk wraps. I have that jumbo rake in case I have major tangles or if I'm low on time. I think that seamless combs are pretty gentle.

Curls look great!

Denman was a total fail for me also and seemed to also encourage waay too much shrinkage. After 3 uses and a failed blow drying attempt with it, I never used it again. I don't even know where that thing is.

Well this has explain why my hair is acting the way it is. And I just broke one of my denam brushes. I have a spare, but I am going to see how my hair responds with out it. I will just use my wide tooth comb to detangle while in the shower. Maybe I can get my WNG not to shrink to neck length.

And your hair is always gorgeous Pokahontas :yep:
