I Need to STOP my Obsession!!!!

I REALLY need to stop looking at other people's hair and comparing mine to theirs. I know everyone's hair grows at a different rate but sometimes I am like I know my hair follicles ain't THAT slow. I suffer from "lust of the eye" when it comes to hair :lick::lick::lick:

For example. In my mind I criticized my co-worker b/c she constantly wears dry ponytails, no oil no moisture no nothing! She self-relaxes then pulls it back into a tiny ponytail. She recently got her hair cut into a chin length bob. It was SO short so I thought for sure I was way past her and would achieve some length while she was waiting for hers to grow back (secret competition in my mind) LO & behold she comes to work yesterday with a fresh relaxer and her ponytail is hanging SO LONG, FULL and EVEN. She has to be at least b/t N/L and SL right now. My ponytail don't even hang like that!?!?!?! Mine doesn't hang at all. I am like WTH. So I asked her what she does, she was like GIRL pls I have too much going on to think about taking care of my hair or taking vitamins. She relaxed it and blow dried it and slicked it back. She never goes to the salon, frequently colors it at home even burned a few pieces out from heat and/or chemicals.

I get annoyed b/c I put so much effort into my hair and people surpass me in growth with minimal to no effort. I know that I can't compare my hair to others BUT it does get frustrating and I tell myself to leave my hair the HECK alone. So I accepted her hair and calmed down only to walk to the elevators just now to see YET ANOTHER CO WORKER who had a chin length bob this past Fall now her hair is SL and it looks beautiful. I am like WTH again!!! I don't know her well enough to ask her what her reggie is but I can tell she frequents the salon and she always wears her hair out AND has blonde highlights. Effortlessly they are achieving & retaining length.

Am I alone in this lust?

Thanks for listening ladies. Back to my reggie :perplexed

You have to do what works for you and your right leaving it alone might allow you to actually see the progress, watching it every day your not going to notice any growth.

YOur time will come just continue to take care of your hair and use your senses minus taste :) to determine your hairs needs.

SHHHH.... I secretly have competitions with family members, LOL.

But all in all don't compare yourself to others because what works for them might not work for you and what works for you might not work for some. :)

You never know... either one of those 2 chicks might have one or two tracks hidden in there for length.

It does no good to compare your progress to others, truer words were never spoken.

to be completely honest, before my hhj. I had fast progress too. There is also something about a bob; it grows out sooo quickly. But the thing is, I couldn't get past apl with such bad practices. so everytime I cut I got to apl in the blink of an eye, but never passed. I don't know if your co workers will be able to either. who knows?

Are you not seeing progress? Sometimes, it's just harder to notice progress on our own heads.

U are right Sharifeh, I have never seen them past SL in my 2.5 years here. They do cut it often and it grows back to that point pretty fast. Good point.

Eventually I think their bad practices catch up with them and they end up having to chop it off again.

I do see progress its just not at the rate I was looking for. I have only been on this HHJ consistently since Sept.2009. So I need to relax. LOL :drunk:

Girl...no you are not alone!! But I agree with LadyPaniolo...those could possibly be weave installs..my sister can whip up a really nice weave pony with less that ear length hair. I feel the same as you..I have an older coworker that when I first started my job..my hair was longer than hers..then she gradually caught up and past me...and after my Aug 09 set back I just stop (secretly) comparing and just committed to my personal hide my hair challenge and bought me about $75 worth of nice hair accesories and called it a day. I know it's frustrating but you will get there....stop talking to them about hair because once they know you are really into hair they will come in there with all types of lengths...

Thanks!! I am gonna keep my lips sealed! U ladies are the only ones I can talk to about hair w/o sounding crazy OR using it against me. LOLOL :lachen:

Please do that, because when I talk to my sister about it she really makes me feel stupid..she says that hair will grow no matter what I do to it...so I have just decided to keep my lips sealed and only answer questions when asked and from the way my hair looks now...there wont be any questions...but just wait....they will come.

:lachen:I think the secret competitions are what keeps us sane!

 not laughing at you, OP
but I was :wallbash: the other day when I noticed my SIL was CBL from NL in Sept!!! :wallbash:
I gave her some tips I found on here and she has been religiously following them!!!
I was proud and jealous at the same time :perplexed:lachen:

I comforted myself when I realized that she IS preggers and that hopefully is a contributing factor to her fast growth

OP I feel ya!

it doggone better be or imma freak out!!! :sekret:

Oh man don't do it. Not everybody needs to follow the LHCF standards of growing long hair. I used to go from NL to SL in a blink of an eye. You couldn't stop me! well actually I'd stop myself LOL because I could never get to APL no matter what I tried. Just ignore them and do you. Take monthly pictures of your hair that always helps to see the progress. Or buy one of those progress t-shirts.

I'm in competitions in my head too LOL. Your not the only one. Someone I know has poor hair care praactices and I just knew I was going to catch up and then finally pass, but everytime I turn around her hair is thicker, stronger, and longer. I've decided to just try and accept my hair the way it is. My hair is healthier than hers but man I dream of thickness. I'll be happy when my hair is on point for real then nothing else matters.
