I have been meaning to ask this for a while...

I don't know, a lot of people don't deep condition. I'm afraid to find out what my hair would look or feel like if I stop.

I love The Natural Haven! It's one of my favorite blogs :yep:, I'm always quoting stuff from there.

Anyway, yes, I still think conditioning is necessary. Penetrating oils are great and I consider them "conditioners". But, conditioning serves other purposes like keeping the cuticles smooth, improving the feel of the hair, increasing moisture, etc. etc.

I oil with coconut oil before every wash, and use it afterward as well, but I still use conditioner. (I don't ever dc with heat or outside of the shower though).

YES. Because DC'ing will add lost protein if you do a protein treatment, or add moisture. Coconut oil is one component of conditioning hair, but not the full package. The article didn't mention that hydrolyzed proteins like keratin/ collagen can penetrate the shaft, at least partially. That's why Aphogee will stay stuck on your hair for at least a few weeks. My understanding is that coconut oil prevents the loss of protein because it naturally has an affinity for it. But so do protein treatments. Also, there are different degrees of penetrating the shaft, not just all or none. Another thing, in my opinion, is that even if something doesn't necessarily penetrate at all, heat makes it stick a lot better to the cuticle. If I use a color rinse with heat, it'll stick to my hair for a good 3 weeks and if I don't like that shade of red I just have to deal with it.

I have tried both and I like my hair a lil better when I leave the conditioner on for 5-10 minutes. It seem to get too soft and pliable if I leave it on for 30 minutes with heat.

Coconut oil can moisturize, but it can't deep condition.

Deep conditioning moisturizes and strengthens the hair. Coconut oil can't do all that.

Good Thread shtow!:nicethread:

IA: with the Other Posters.

The Oil is Good But the DC Treatment is like the icing on the cake.

It gives all your other efforts that "extra" punch.:yep:

I have been incorporating Hot Oil Treatments specifically those oils that penetrate the hair shaft

i.e. Coconut, Avacado & Olive.:lick:

The Deep Conditioners just back up the Hot Oil so to me, they all work in concert with one another.

I rarely dc and I use coconut oil.The last time I dced was 3 months ago. I really don't have a problem w/ retaining moisture w/ my natural hair. I don't think it's just the coconut oil though b/c I use it as a sealer only. I think it's a combination of my moisturizing products and techniques

And relaxer dries our hair out too. When I was natural I never dc'd. Now that I'm relaxed I DC to help restore moisture to my hair.

BeetleBug,
What products are you using? I'm natural and when my hair gets to a certain length my hair gets dry:ohwell:

For my cowashes, I use Suave conditioners. As my main moisturizer, I use Qhemet Biologics' Burdock Root Butter Cream. That guarantees moisturized hair for days for me. On days where I haven't use the Burdock Cream, I refresh my hair w/ a spray bottle filled w/ water and a bit of Suave conditioner. Hth

eta: Sometimes, I will use Kinky Curly Knot today as leave in and that's it.

I have went back to my beloved Ojon Oil

Last night I was on the Ojon web site:look:

According to the owner The Tawira or The People of Beautiful Hair.....only use Oil on there hair.

They all have long, shiny, healthy looking hair.

No Deep Conditions just Oil.

I do both. I figure I'll take as much of a great thing as possible. My hair feels so soft and smooth when I pre-poo on damp hair with Coconut Oil & EVOO mixed and applied onto the wet hair with a deep con on top. I usually pre-poo overnight with this.

Very interesting article OP. Thanks for posting. I currently deep condition - sometimes overnight, sometimes with heat for 30 minutes but always some kind of deep condition for at least 30 minutes. I'm relaxed and I see no harm to my hair but it's good to know that if I'm ever in a rush (which is never!), conditioning for a few minutes is sufficient. And I just started using coconut oil, so I'm glad to see that it has benefits. But I must say, I prefer avocado oil. It seems to work better for my hair.

i use oils but i would never give up deep conditioning and this is coming from a person that thinks the world of coconut oil.

My post has nothing to do with hair....Shtow....ur siggy........the arms....:lick:....the tatoo on the arm :lovedrool:...sorry lol

I don't DC currently. I rinse my hair in warm water daily (2x) and co-wash daily. I also use a moisturizing DC. I don't use oil either.

This suits my (natural hair) fine. When relaxed I washed and co-washed daily and DCed once a week and used a moisturizing leave-in.

I also did a spell not DCing, but kept up with the washing, co-washing and moisture leave-in daily with no ill effects.

If you have a moisture heavy regimen (water, conditioner a leave-in every day or 2-3 days) you may not need to DC. It depends on one's hair.

For the record mine is dense in strand and density.

Using oil with a moisture heavy regimen in place of a DC may be all one's hair needs.
