Last week I was touch up time for me. I decided after a lot of thought to comb my relaxer through and go bone straight (Don't ask why because I don't know it may have been a fit of rage after ridiculous detangling issues). So I did that and of course my hair is not bone straight even though it feels that way after having a head full of natural hair for over five years. Here is the issue now. I don't know what to do with my hair anymore.

It's weird.:spinning: When my hair was relaxed before I took care of my hair just fine but now I am at a loss. I wore my hair straight for a few days but it was limp and weird and flat. I tried to do a wash and go but it was crunchy and weird. I guess I am adjusting right now. I don't know how much product to use, it seems that I always use too much. Even a quater size is too much when I was using a handful natural. So I admit I am at a loss right now. Ohh and I can't get through 2 days without washing my hair when it looks perfectly fine.

I need some advice. I tried to do a search on air drying methods but I did not get anything. I need some Bantu Knot advice also. I know how to make it work on natural and highly textured hair but I don't know what to do on relaxed.

So what advice would you give a long term natural who has just relaxed????

TIA

What are you conditioning with and for how long?

Personally, I am relaxed and my hair is wet almost daily. I air dry in a bun and I have no problems. My hair dries smooth and soft. I think the key is making sure your hair is deeply conditioned. Can you rollerset?

I can rollerset but it takes a lot of time. I deep condition with ORS paks. But I just relaxed last week so I don't know what the deal is. Let me ask you this....is your hair a lot more flat the week you relax. My hair is extra flat and weird. I have always had fine hair so I did not expect my hair to look gorgeously thick like Dysilla or Macheriemore (sp??) but I am hoping it will thicken up a bit.

So when you airdry, what prodcuts do you use and how much?

Usually a week or two after I relax, my hair's still kinda flat. The key is to use a little bit of product. Like with my leave in, I'll part my hair in two and apply a nickel size amount to each section. Using too much product will weigh your hair down and make it dry hard

For styling you can do braid outs, twist outs (my relaxed hair doesn't hold the twist at the ends, so I either braid the ends or use rubber bands) and bantu knots. Have you tried bantu knots on your relaxed hair yet? I do them on my hair and my natural dd's hair, and I do it the same way on both of us. I don't think there's a difference when doing bantus on natural and relaxed hair.

Try practicing rollersetting more, it'll become your best friend :yep: I looove rollersetting my hair, it comes out so bouncy! Again, less is more for a good rollerset

Have you tried co washing? Remember that relaxed hair needs to be babied, so you have to be sure to keep up with your deep conditioning. Take a look at the deep conditining challenge, it's great!

I have tried a co-wash kinda. Meaning, I did not put anything it in, I just caught up and could not style, so it just dried. I have a lot more to try out with that style.

I will try the Bantu knots the exact same way. As well as the braidout. I think I just have figure out the amount of product and learn just how to do everything. My natural hair was effortless once I got beyond the detangling.

As far as my regimine. I tink it is very nurturing for my hair. But I may need to change it who nows.

I am a co-washer, so if my hair is not straight I would
-co-wash 3 times a week.
-light protien Aphogee 2 minutes followed by a deep conditioning (cheapie conditioner mixed with an oil and humectant..olive oil or castor oil, then glycerin, honey or aloe vera) once a week. I detangle here also and use ACV or Bentonite to "wash" my hair before the treatment.
-Hot Oil Treatment with Palm Red Oil and a little tea tree oil once a month for scalp.
-Every 6 weeks heavy Aphogee protien followed by ORS pack deep conditioning.

I have fairly fine strands and my hair is almost always sofy except in the crown. I deep condition once a week and I co-wash several times. Most of my hair product is alchohol free. It's all just heavy so once I run out I will look at using other things. I don't do the PJ thing so I have to use before I buy.

Thanks for the advice ladies. If you can offer anything more after my response please do so.
I am patiently waiting for week 2 and 3 to see if my hair thickens up some. I think I will also have to get used to straighter hair because it is a lot more sleek instead of huge.

Yep. It looks a little flatter for the first week or so. I have fine hair too but after the first week, it starts to plump back up.

When I air dry, I apply leave in, either HE LTR, Paul Mitchell the conditioner or garnier leave in, and then I top it off with a little organix coconut serum;

my hair is very flat for the first week. it's frustrating to me to but I just have to wait for life to be breathed back into it.

I noticed too that my normal condishes don't work for the first two weeks after my relaxer.

A lot of ladies re-neutralize and things like that to get the hair past the traumatic stage.

Uhm....Just wanted to say I think your hair is gaw-jaws. It looked great before...and looks great now. I hope you get the advice you need. If you need to think about new product, give my albums a glance.

I hope you get the advice you need....I'm a bit rusty with relaxers methinks. Yeah...right. I just want to feel nat'chal. :lachen:

I co-sign with the above posters.

Give it some time, make sure your protein/moisture balance is good. If it is, check your porosity.

If that's fine...look at your products. The more the not-so-merrier with my relaxed hair. It liked one leave-in, one poo, one conditioner (which might be a mix of things). My natural hair is the same way. Simple desires, but very high maintenence.

Good to know I am not the only one. I may try some type of serum or something. It may make a difference.

Hello Turnergirl. You should look at the thread entitled "Self Relax Support Thread" by LadyEsquire. Excellent source of information and website links for your relaxed head. Seriously worth the read!
