After a year of lurking...progress followed by setbacks...who knew that this girl's words would be the thing that pushed me into getting serious about my hair...Since I really don't want to write a book I'm going to get to the point..I was in the cafeteria at my college when my roommate and her sorority sisters decided to join me for dinner..Since my roomie just joined this sorority I did not know these other girls that well. After talking and laughing with them for a while I thought hey these are some really cool ladies...well I spoke or shall i say "thought" to soon..out of the blue one of the girls turns to me and says.."I know I don't know you like that but..what is up with your hair?"...my mouth literally dropped to the floor...my response was " I just took my micro's out a week ago so..." she was like "oh ok"...Now ladies..it really doesn't look that bad I have a headband on and since my hair is only NL I just pinned the back up so it's not touching my neck. I don't know maybe I'm overreacting but I've always been the type of person to take care of my appearence and I know the majority of my college years I've been slacking (sweat pants, t-shirt + 30lb weight gain) except for special occassions but I just didn't think it was that bad for a stranger! to call me out. There's more I could say but I'll leave it at this...Here are my hair pics over the last few years.

The first two pics are from 2006/2007
3rd pic and 4th pic are from 2008
The most recent one is the 5th pic and that was probably Jan 2010 (note. the front bang part is a hair piece)

I don't really have a regimen since I pretty much go to a salon every week. I've tried so many products but my hair doesn't turn out looking "good" when I do it.

I'm sorry they called you out like that. That's rude and not thinking about others feelings. But I'm glad it inspired you to take haircare to the next level. Some of my sisters told me my skin looked horrible....:look: And I covered it up with bad makeup. A year later my skin looks a LOT better. I don't think they meant to get under my skin like they did, but it did do some good. It sparked an interest in making myself a better person physically and mentally. So just take it for what it's worth.

Welcome to LHCF you're definitely in the right place.

While I'm sorry that tactless, tacky, stank heffuh faced beyotch hurt your feelings, I'm glad it sparked some action in you. From what you said, it seems that you need a lil shaking up to get out of your funk. Hit the gym, put on your cute clothes, you're worth it. Look good, feel good, and remember you are the Sh*t!!

Anyyyywaaaaay.....
What are you getting done at the salon each week?
What do you do to your hair on a daily basis between salon visits?
How long have you been at NL?
Its good that you had your hair pinned up, keeping the ends "safe"
What are your hair goals?

Glad you came out of lurkdom to join us.

Welcome to the board!:congrats:

That girl was outta line:nono:

Either way, it doesn't matter, you're here now. I would say take a look at the relaxed support threads research and soak up all the info you can...my advice is to eventually become a complete do it yourselfer

Aww I'm sorry about that:nono:
It helps to realize that even though some people are grown, they act like they have no sense at all.
Some people will do whatever to get the approval of others, and many women think being catty is the same as having a strong personality:rolleyes:
Don't even sweat that mess hun.
Not that it matters, but just out of curiosity, what does her hair look like?

Welcome to the board!!!!!!!!:hug2:

If that were me I would have said "No, whats up with your hair?"

People are so rude. Dont mind them. You will get a chance to show her whats really up with you hair when you have it flowing down your back healthy and beautiful:yep:

Welcome to the forum!!! :)

I'm sorry that she was rude to you. I really don't understand how people feel free to just say whatever to other people. Even though her negativity pushed you to join here, the positivity on the forum will entice you to stay. :yep: Good luck to you on your hair journey.

wow that was rude!
but as the others said, you're in the right place. who knows, in not too long that same rude girl will turn to you for advice.

Welcome!

Girl, I love your posts -- you always say EXACTLY what I'm thinking!

Anyhoo, WELCOME to the forum :drunk: hopefully you'll find a lot of helpful info here. Don't worry, no one here is that tactless and rude -- I bet she was probably trying to be funny. And what DOES her hair look like?

You know we wanna know ALL about what you are getting done at the salon, as well as the things you've tried in the past. What year are you in school? This isn't important, I'm just nosy :lachen:

The best revenge is to swing some seriously gorgeous hair in their faces in a year:yep:

Come in and talk anytime you want. You WILL be successful!!!

:rosebud:

Welcome to the board. You know what? i'm glad you're no longer lurking, and putting yourself out there.

regardless of how she bought the message, take it and run with it. You are going to learn so much about your hair, your body, and yourself, here.

regarding the weight...

Many moons ago, i lost a lot of weight, because a hispanic guy on steroids cussed me out. I was staring so hard at the man. He was beautiful. But it irked him to no end that a "fat chick" was looking at him.

Fast forward, 2 1/2 years later, i grew into a competitive bodybuilder. Thanks to his "rude" advice. And, i'm still turning heads at almost 50.

Life is like that OP - take what you need, and leave the rest. I'd rather someone tell me the gawd honest truth, than tell me those "tender lies"...

enjoy your journey, my dear...

Welcome!

I know you will find all the hair info you need and more on here. I also think you will be successful with your hair care once you learn to do it by yourself. And trust me you can learn to do your own hair better than a salon stylist once you practice enough.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

I woulda said "you're right b*word you DON'T know me that well".. the nerve of some females I'll tell you.. im mad for you honey..

anywho.. glad you've joined you'll find so much info here .. you should join the Jheri Juice Challengee.. "& be juicayy!! its the bizz;) shout's honor :)

She obviously didn't really care about your hair but tryin' to play you. It was extremely rude for her to say that to you but do learn how to take care your hair for yourself and not for that rude chick. You don't have to prove anything to anyone but yourself. I know you will find all the information you will ever need here.

:welcome4::newbie: You're among friends here.:circle: I've been in the same situation in the past as well. Take your time and do as much research as possible, don't be afraid to ask questions. Also, try checking out some of the Fotkis of some of the members that have the same hair type as you (Everything doesn't work for everybody but it helps to try some of the techniques of those that have similiar hair types :yep:)

Good luck and happy hair growing!

That was very rude of her. It's one thing for a friend to keep it real w/you and another for a stranger to try and call you out. I wouldn't have bothered giving her an explanation. She didn't deserve one.

Each week I get a deep conditioner and either rollerset or flat iron..thats it
Between salon visits I moisturize with either Cantu leave in conditioner 1-2x a day or Organics olive oil moisturizing growth lotion and then I also apply a little kemi oil
I wrap my hair faithfully every night with a satin scarf and the velcro wrap
I only use wide-tooth combs and occassionally a paddle brush
I recently got microbraids for 2mo for the first time and I feel like maybe it did more hurt than harm. Currently I'm 3months post relaxer
I've been neck length for about a year now but as I mentioned earlier I've had many set backs..I was at ear length almost a year ago
I don't know what my goal is now but a year ago I wanted to be at least SL by the time I graduate nursing school in a year
