Huge Hair Shock Last Night!! Advice?!

Ok, Ladies. I need to express both extreme shock, pleasure, and seek your counsel.

Sometimes have actual dreams of having beautiful waist length hair. Of course, when I'd wash it at the end of the week and do a quick front length check, it'd be BSL. Now, I'm not complaining about that. I like to get goofy and tuck the front part of my hair under my boobs just because I can (I know, I'm weird). My hair is healthy and strong and for that I am glad. My intern asked me to take my hair out of my bun two weeks ago, and because it's hard to say no to her, I did. She said that she really thinks my hair ought to be near waist length, but I told her that it was a little past my bra strap. She didn't look convinced, but she let it go.

Fast forward to last night when I deep conditioned with heat for the first time in almost a year because I finally replaced my hood dryer. My hair was very happy after that, so I decided to do a length check, but this time I pulled from the lower half of my hair the back.

O. M. G. My hair was indeed almost to my waist in the back. I kept thinking that maybe I was pulling on loose hairs and expected to have them slide off into my hands. But when I tugged hard, I snapped head backwards (ow!) and no hairs came out. I gave up a long time ago on growing my hair and focused on health because I thought my medications prevented my hair from growing past BSL.

I promise I will post pics. But I washed my hair and checked the length at midnight and was too tired to get set up my camera and take pics. I just finished my normal routine (update in my profile) and went to bed. When I wash my hair again I promise I will take pics and update the thread! Pics or it didn't happen, right?

My question is this: Clearly I need to try and make a little effort to grow the front of my hair, but will it work? Has anyone else dealt with extreme layers like this? What did you do? Halp!

I have huge layers, my shortest at shoulder length almost APL and my longest are mid back. I want to have less layers but I got them cut years ago because my hair is so thick and hard to deal with. I love lays though!

Why are struggling with them?

I've just never been a fan of lots of layers on me. I guess I just prefer a very classic version of long hair - all one length. Whenever I admire long hair on any woman regardless of texture, it's usually all one length.

So, the last time I checked, my hair was barely BSL. Here it is wet/pulled. It might be a bit longer when straightened, but I'm not willing to expose my hair to direct heat. Regardless, I think I'm super close to WL. What do you think?

It looks like it to me, though the shirt hides your waist some. I love your thickness. Your hair looks great! Congrats!

I thought about that after my sister snapped the first pic (white shirt). I took one of myself using the timer on my phone hoping it would give you a better idea. You can see the indentation of my waist on the left side. I didn't realize all my form fitting clothes are dark, so I had to do with light colors that are a bit baggy.

RegaLady Thanks! I wash once or twice per week w/ sulfate-free shampoo, condition with GPB or Silk Elements and finger detangle, use Silk Elements leave in, seal with Wild Grown Oil, and bun with hair stick. No elastic ties or metal clips - ever. I also try and have a good protein intake and recently added a weekly DC with heat.

Honestly, I don't know how long my hair has been darn near my waist. I guess it's because I stopped brushing my whole head about a year and a half ago when I had to cut off a whole lot of hair due to styling damage. Since then, I make a bun right after I seal with the WGO by twist my hair, put in the hair stick, and brushing just the top to make it flat. Since I know my hair was a little above BSL 1.5 years ago, I'd say it took me about that long to go from above BSL to where it is now. I may just straighten a single part with my mother's ceramic just to get a definite length check.

Your hair looks strong, healthy and WL to me. If it's not, it's a teeny-tiny bit from it.

Congrats! Is this your goal?

regina07 Thanks! Yes, WL is certainly my goal. However, I still need about 3 more inches in the front. It's about MBL in the front (if that makes sense).

Your length and thickness is amazing.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen your hair! *does happy dance*

Your hair is beautiful. I love the minimal styling. I believe you are waist, as the ends of your hair appear to be kinda wrapped on your finger...thanks for sharing.

You are definitely waist. The second pic was not up yet. You are grabbing more hair/not wrapping it. ...and you don't need to straighten. It can clearly be seen. :yep:

I think it looks WL, if you're not there already, I think you will definitely be there if you were to straighten a piece. Congratulations OP!

Yeah my hair was a slippery little bugger in the first pic. I had to wrap it a bit to hold it down. It was easier when my hair was just damp with no product.

WHAT BEAUTIFUL HAIR YOU HAVE!!! My opinion is that you are BEYOND the WL line when straightened. Congratulations on your major surprise!

@Enyo - I just recently started to finger detangle and that has been the best decision for my hair so far! I think we share the same hair type, density, and everything! I can imagine my hair looking similar to yours in about 1.5 yr from now.

Can we see a pic of your hair in its 'dry' state? If you have one.

Great progress! I'm truly inspired.

Where do you get your hair sticks from and what bun styles do you do with them?

I like Epstone and Quecraft a lot (both on Etsy). As for the buns, I don't get really creative - it's either large and fluffy or slicked back and tight. Quecraft has some stunning horn and wood barrettes that use sticks instead clamps or teeth. I ordered one and look forward to finding a protective updo. :yep:
