:::HOW MANY SETBACKS HAVE YOU HAD:::

As a relaxed head - too many to count. I haven't really had any as a natural. I did cut my highlights out but that was my choice. My hair wasn't damaged.

I haven't really had any setbacks. And from being on the board I know what not to do, so I don't expect any.

IMO, a lot of these setbacks seem self induced. Like if someone trims your hair and every time you end up with a hair cut, then don't go back. Or if you smell your hair burning as someone is straightening it then get up and leave. If you don't feel your hair is rinsed enough, rinse it more. Don't like the way they detangle? Bring your own comb, do it yourself, or go somewhere else. I know I won't be allowing any of these things to happen to me because I have learned from everyone else's mistakes.

I know the board is here for people to vent and what not but I no longer have sympathy for folks who have avoidable setbacks.

LOLOLOL no pity eh?
and one day it will happen to you. I promise you.

I had no use for people with set backs either back in 2005.
I had the biggest set back of my life in 2006, when I tried to wash my hair after I had taken down my weave.

I still to this day do not know what I did wrong, as I had detangled and everything.
Needless to say, I had bald spots for 6 months, which I covered up with a wig.

Happy ending: my hair is now brastrap and growing, the bald spots grew out within the year due to my constant wig wearing, and nurturing.

My issue is with the setbacks that are avoidable. I mean, what is so hard about paying attention while you're getting your hair done? If you don't like what's happening then get out the chair and go somewhere else.

I just get annoyed when someone posts and they're like every time I go to this stylist they cut 3 inches when I only ask for half an inch. Then they want to complain that the person just cut off all their progress. Or when someone has suffered breakage 2 or 3 times because the relaxer didn't get rinsed out completely. Then they post yet again about a stylist not rinsing all the relaxer out. At some point you have to take responsibility. I don't feel bad for people who keep allowing things to happen to them.

Setbacks do happen. Everything is not within our control but a lot of it is. I'm doing my absolute best to avoid things that might bring about a setback but I acknowledge that things do happen and I might have one at some point myself. But, it won't be because a stylist started to detangle my 4b natural hair with a rattail comb and I sat there and let her.

my set back earlier this year was when i went to a lady who was not my regular stylist. she cut my hair in layers after i argued with her not to. my hair was maybe 2inches from apl at the time. when she got done my longest legnth was just past sl. i was so hurt. but im past that now.

So in my quest for long healthy hair, I keep screwing up :spinning:

I just took my braids down and it grew! Yay me, but not really :nono:

I didn't spend enough time detangling I guess, AGAIN :wallbash: so after washing some of my hair was notted up. Ho HUM like a mug

Well I just cut those parts. I'm getting a relaxer this week sometime and I'm getting it cut right back to the length it is in my siggy. I guess I'll just update my siggy with my do anyway, lol. Even though it'll be the same.

Things I've learned, weaves and braids aren't for me any more. I never had these problems in the past. I did so much better DCing every three days and bunning last year, my hair grew like a weed. But I fell off the wagon and cut it, got tired of my hair after a while. Back to square one!

This is why I had to stop braiding and weaving my hair:nono:. They were causing more harm than good. My hair has been growing out nicely since I switched from braids/weaves to ponytail/buns. I hope to update my avatar and album soon.

Aww crap! I'm sorry this happened to you. I take down my braids this weekend, but I am getting anxious to take it down on Tommorrow. Well anyways yes I have had two setbacks this year. I think my hair would have been about two inches longer if I would have detangled enough as well, this time I am definitely making sure to detangle well.

My setback was pre LHCF. I took out my senegalese twists and I had this idea that water would detangle the hair. So i didn't comb out properly, hopped into the shower, DC'd and even while I was rinsing out the condish I knew something was wrong.

My mom had to help me detangle my hair as it was matted all over. I went from full almost APL to SL with see through ends. I had to cut and start all over.

And when I went to the Doms, she put relaxer all through my head and blew me out with high heat. I had some serious split ends and i haen't been back to them since March and have no plans to do so.

Now I know better and hopefully will avoid any setbacks. Well off to wash and DC:grin:

I think set backs are a normal part of the process of learning how to properly care for your hair.

For me the biggest setback was the one that came when I opened my bank statement- OUCH :lachen:.......... & why am I laughing :nono:

 Good question. I have had too many to count. I like to experiment and I have done some crazy thing to my head in the name of educating myself......I'll leave it at that.

I have had a set back as of late though but I am working on fixing it, or atleast trying too. Time will tell if I can get it done

I haven't had setbacks, I just haven't been as loyal to my hair in the past yr. I do need a trim so I guess that will end up a setback.

Two years ago I cut my hair down to a TWA and began my healthy hair care journey. I wore my hair naturally for about 6 months, then texturized it. About i year ago I used an at home colour (CLAIROL'S NATURAL INSTINCTS) and it fried my hair! It made my ends extremely dry to the point where I am cutting an inch off with each touch up. I have already lost a few inches because of this. I will never use an at home colour again - major setback.

Mine was not detangling good, and seeing majority of my hair on the floor. It was not a pretty site, the only person to blame was myself. Along with that I underprocess, and was not combing good enough. Now I know to detangle alot better. When wet and well conditioned, once a week I take a smaller comb and comb my hair out, of course in small pieces. This has helped me so far. We will see when I get 6-8 weeks post if I past the test.

I've had so many setbacks.

Mostly it's been mistakes I made without knowing better. The big ones that come to mind is that when I first got here I didn't understand how my hair reacts to hardcore protein and I did an aphogee treatment and my flipped. I wound up having to trim some seriously huge knots out.

Prior to LHCF there were accidents with hair dye, clippers, scissors, relaxers. You name it I've probably done it and messed up my hair some way.

And don't get me started on my first two roller setting attempts. There were piles of broken and pulled out hair, tears and a huge temper tantrum and a near head shaving.

I have had 2 major set backs since joining LHCF. First, in 2007 I got henna happy and it dried the mess out my fine delicate strands. It was a matted tangly mess after that. I tried everything and spent alot of money trying to revive my precious hair:rolleyes:. I've been cutting little by little maintaining BSL between MBL. Second, I jump on the ayurvedic bandwagon, started shedding like crazy. I also had patches of broken hair in the top of my hair.

Things are looking up. Hair is thickening up and growing. Now I am trying to grow those patches of broken hair out:wallbash:.

I hate set backs oh lord....when i was a natural i was like apl to bsl...when i was like 6-8 years old. Then i got a relaxer at 8, and my hair was stuck at SL FOR LIKE EVER. My hair looked completely thin and unhealthy. I learned about hair care in 2007 and my hair didn't grow past SL!! No matter what i did it. It was thin and just not cute. So i just decided to be natural because i hate relaxers....now i have twa. My hair is thicker and it grows faster now that i am natural. I hope that i won't have any setbacks, please JESUS!!!

I've had a few minor setbacks and two major setbacks. All were due to my own foolishness(there was period of time where I went overboard with straightening iron) and/or major slacking on taking care of my hair (neglecting the ends, hardly ever moisturizing, etc..). All of the setbacks resulted in my cutting off inches of hair because I was so disgusted with my dry, damaged, anemic looking ends.

I have since learned my lesson and have become much more consistent in my hair care routines.

Today was a MAJOR setback and because of this I have decided to Texlax.

DO NOT as a natural, WET YOUR HAIR and then go to bed without detangling. This weekend or sometime during this week, I went to bed on wet hair. No detangling, just conditioner and wet hair. Woke up and noticed my hair seemed shorter than it should and REALLY knotted up. I rinsed my hair and went about my day.

Decided to take the comb to my hair in the shower tonight after applying some deep conditioner to it and the horror. I had a HANDFUL of hair in my hand....an actual entire handful of natural hair in my hand. That did not include the hair all over the tub, walls, and shower curtain. I was just to beyond pissed to cry. I don't use heat daily. I wash once a week and moisturize and condition almost daily but this is just too much. I should not have to walk around with a wet head to keep my hair soft. So far it is the only way I have figured out how to make it soft. Not greasy, no oily but really soft.

It takes WAY to much upkeep and maintenance to keep the natural hair I have. My hair has not grown from it's current lenght since joining this board in 04. I've been hovering or stuck at SL for YEARS!.

The only time I noticed growth was when, I had braids and I did Co-washes everyday. The problem are my ends and the constant tangles. They keep me at SL. Being totally natural for me now is just not worth the constant knotted hassles, detangling hassles.

I'm texlaxing....I'm done!

I've had 4 that I can think of since starting my hair journey. Twice I washed my hair without detangling properly after taking down braids..and my hair dreaded.
I've also had severe shedding that only I just recently got under control. And another time I got cornrows and the chick tried 2 comb thru my 5 month post hair with a rattail comb.

2 that I can think of.Heat, my failure to moisturize, and not wrapping my hair before I sleep are the culprits.

After removing my last sew-in, I discovered a lot of breakage and shedding. It was already breaking in one area from the front to the crown due to me constantly scratching and I had a bald spot in the back (as bald as Kojak I might add). So my remedy for this is to keep chemical relaxing to a minimum and use growth aids (MN, BT and MT) along with weekly deep conditioning (i'm kinda lazy on this too) and airdry. Oh and I'm wearing a wig to hide my hair during the winter months.
