I brush my hair into a bun daily and I don't have any breakage. An when my hair is wet, and I want to put it into a bun, I'll use a baby's brush for my edges. Either way, I've never exprerienced hair line breakage or breakage on my ends from brushing.
I didn't realize so many people experienced problems when brushing their hair or just simply preferred not to brush. I feel like I have to brush my pressed hair. Brushing separates my strands and makes my hair appear more fuller. It also helps spread the oils so my hair doesn't feel greasy. I don't brush my completely dried, natural hair though. Ain't a brush in the world could fight its way through that!
Since I wear my hair natural, I don't brush my hair that often anymore since in my past a brush was used to "smooth" a style. The only time I'll use a brush is when I'm wearing my pony puff and so I smooth the back and sides up into my puff.
When I was 14 or 15 I brushed my hair like a white girl. No insult intended, I had white friends and we brushed our hair all the time. My hair was thick and healthy and had an incredible shine. That was then, I would not dare try that now. I think at that age your hair is full of hormones and probably in a healthier state. Pluse I remember I had just gotten my first relaxer after growing out a very short fro, so it was probably just that my hair was really health. Now, I only do 5 to 10 strokes after I do my daily conditioner rinse. This is only to get my bun style smooth. I don't brush it dry because I rarely wear my hair down. Also, prior to brusing those few strokes, I wet my boar brush with hot hot water to soften the bristles. I suppose I could get the same effect with a softer brush, but that is how I get by now.

Hi Mindymouse,
I'm not quite certain but I think it's those brushes used when some people blowdry their hair made of plastic teeth...I think?
