How do you do it Fall Wearers?

I know I am full of questions tonight, but after a less than favorable experience with my underprocessed hair and a phony bun, I decided to look to other alternatives for a protective style. So, as much as I HATE wearing OPH (Other people's Hair), I broke down and bought a fall.

Here are my questions/issues.

My ends are really damaged (practically bald on the sides) from a bad micro braid experience. I noticed that you must leave some hair out to blend with the fall. How do I get the silky texture of the fake hair to blend with my dull, dry barely there waves (or naps as I refer to them)?

Is there any way to get rid of all that darn shine? It looks so FAKE!!

How do you secure these things? I'm afraid it's going to fall out?

I am not even sure I am going to wear this thing, but I was going to try to play around with it to see if I can make it look halfway decent.

I bought a $20 one. Any suggestions on a more natural looking choice?

I have let mine sit in vinegar and water for about 15 min and then air dry to control that fake shine.

I braid my hair to the back in about 5 cornrows and place the combs at the beginning and ends of my braids.

For more natural ones, either choose human hair or a curly style like spiral or straw set curls

I have my stylist braid my hair in one circular braid around the outer parameter and several cornrows in the middle while wearing the falls. I get my hair washed and deep conditioned every 2 weeks while doing so. I did this last winter and loved it and will be going back to it around Thanksgiving.

My hair in the front is blown out and curled to match the fall and at night I remove the fall and tie my hair down. I have pics of my experience with falls in my fotki.

When I wear a fall, I braid my hair in five corn rows going back, and then place the combs at the beginning of the braids. It's secure and not going anywhere. I think the key to a natural looking fall is to get human hair close to the texture of your own hair. I bought one for ~$100. Noone can ever tell the difference!

I got a $50.00 human one in my avatar, I really like it. I'm still practicing on the blending part. I think it's much easier to work with curly hair. I am pin curling my hair in the back, I wish I could do corn rows. I leave something like a bang out on the top and a little bit of the sides out. I would like to go to a nice wig shop and find a really nice one, You get what you pay for, but some of the $20.00 synthetic instant weaves aren't so bad, heck we pay more than $20.00 for a shampoo style at the salon. So I think it's a good deal all around.

What kinds of wig caps do you wear ladies? I want to make sure I don't have rubbing problems. I make sure to double moisturize when I wear mine.

Also, do you find that they bother you by the end of the day? I can't use the combs in the back, seems like they hurt before long... I'm very tender headed. I just pin it down in the back instead.

I just wanted to see if any of you expericed this, or would those issues be resolved with a more expensive fall....ya'll got me thinking :-)

 Okay, I'n hijacking the thread!! LOL how do you wash and dry your falls?? I'm new at this falll business too, but I think it has great protective styling potential!

InJesusName, depending on the style of the fall, try using a pretty head band to cover most of your edges and to hide the connect between the fall and your hair. You can experiment with widths and colors, or go with basic black. I just tried this out with a straight fall and it looks really cute. I will take a picture soon, I'm too lazy tonight to find my camera :look:

Let us know how it turns for you.

I do the headband thing too. Especially when Im stretching and im about 8 weeks post. The headband helps my newgrowth lay down in the front. I also try to moisturize before putting on the headband to prevent stress from wearing it so often.

Can you tell me if you added braid spray or anything else to your hair when you took your fall out at night? I did the fall thing in the past and my hair broke off around the perimeter where my natural hair and the fall seperate.

I want to try again because i'm getting a little tired of the bun every darn day!!

Can you help a sistah out? I may try what you do but i want to know EVERYTHING so my hair doesn't break again

thanks!!

I use a lot of moistuer like ORS or Sird Tree butter, and then a wig cap over my hair so that the wig can rub against it rather than directly on my hair. I am also switching up with the UPA clip. I try not to wear them more than 2 days in a row with a con wash in between, but that's because I'm working out a lot. I think a good wig cap or better yet weave cap, they hold better plus moisture should make a difference.

Perhaps you could get a wider band and wear it more towards the front just letting your edges peak out? I'm going to target, I've seen some really cute ones out, and they are in style. You'll have to experiment. Even a cute scarf tied just right might work. I used to do that when my braids needed a touch-up.

I didnt use any braid spray back then but I did oil my scalp every other night with Doo Gro oil and the grease faithfully. I never wore my cornrows longer than 2 weeks and would get it washed and a good deep conditioning and back up in the cornrows again for more falls. I was on my surge kick for about a month while wearing the falls too but I stopped becaue it give me a chemical burn.

My aunt experienced breakage recently from her falls as well BUT she tried to sleep in them. I took mine off at night and oiled it then but a satin scarf over my head. I think keeping that comb stuck in her DRY THIRSTY scalp attributed to her breakage though.

Hope this helps :)

Good Lawd, how on earth did she sleep in these things. I am so tender headed, I really don't like anything on my head at all if I can help it, but I am doing this to give my hair a much needed rest so I am working on getting used to it. I have one on today at work, and so far so good. It's only 9:30 tho! LOL

I love my UPA clip because it doesn't bother me one bit. I just trimmed my ragged ends about 2 inches tryiing to even up and get rid of spits so I won't be able to slick back into a nice looking pony for a while until it grows out some more. I'm growing out layers while wearing the falls too, that will give me much more bunning and other protective styling options. I say look into a good weave cap, they have wholes in them and they won't smother your head and will prevent direct contact with your hair and the hair peice.

Thanks ladies (rootdeep & atlantajj),

i bought a wig cap a while back and when i opened the package it look like pantyhose? I could of just cut up one of my old hose!!! i don't think this is what you're talking about.

2) what is a UPA clip?:ohwell:

I'm threw out my old falls late summer and I will most likely by a new human hair one this weekend, maybe a curly one like one of you mentioned.

thanks for your help and tips.:)

I don't like the panty hose kind, I get the actual weave cap, which has holes in it, lets your hair breate, ask your BSS lady. Do a search on UPA clip, you'll get a bunch of hits including one with a picture of me wearing one.

Okay you ladies are making me get the feeling for those falls again. I have promised myself to keep these braids in for 3 more weeks. They are only 3 weeks old! LOL! But when I take these braids down in EARLY November I'm going to POSSIBLY switch between falls and a good weave till February and I should be at APL by then.

As for my aunt she is hard headed. She told me she isnt trying to have her husband scared to sleep with her at night with her hair all wild. I'm like he didnt fall in love with your HAIR but hey thats me I'm single so I dont know but when I do get married I hope hubby can work around my satin cap! LOL :lachen: I rather wear my satin cap with a head full of hair than to wake up to NO HAIR AT ALL.

Some Pics of My BSL Fall

it's not pinned all the way down (kinda poofy in the top), but this is the general look. It's a real easy style to do. I have my own bangs out.

Thank you.... GRIN I have two from Sensationnel. Both human hair, one curly and the straight one, gives me styling options. Let us know what you get! Take pictures :-) experiment to get the right positioning.

Is a fall the same as a wig? I am not sure what the difference is?

Oooh, look at that pretty little baby!!!!

A fall is also called a 3/4 wig or an instant weave (Sensationnel) that's the kind I have. You wear it with your hair out in the front covering where the fall is attached to your hair. The one I have on in the picture is covered with my hair and I have my bangs out in the front aond on the sides. They are cool because it's an alternative to bunning. I just make sure my hair is protected under the wig cap part and around the edges of the cap.

I was an avid fall wearer for like a year and a half. I only wear them now if I'm inbetween styles. I have pictures of them in my fotki. When I was relaxed I would just tuck my hair under in the back and put it on. I kept mines on all the time though and took it off once a week to wash and maybe once every few days to comb through my hair. I hated having to refind the spot in my head for the comb.

I generally didn't wash them. I would buy $20 synthetic ones and wear them for a month and then just throw them out. If I bought a human one and reused it I would just wash it in the sink with shampoo and let it airdry.

I found that some brands had better combs than others which made them stay on better. Like the Sensationnel Instant Weaves have the comb that goes from ear to ear. On some other brands like Outre or Model Model, the comb in the front is only in the very middle so they move around a bit. I didn't use any pins though and I never had one fall off. They stayed better when I had a bit of new growth.

Some people have said they had problems with the comb causing breakage but I never had a problem. After I had first started wearing them, A few months later I went to the hairdresser and she was like girl what have you been doing to your hair? You've been taking care of it very well! Whatever you're doing keep doing it. The falls/half wigs were a life saver for me. Now that I know how to weave, I usually just weave my own hair that way I don't have to worry about taking hair off and putting it back on  HTH...
