Horrible Dominican Salon Experience with Garlic Treatment

This weekend I went to get my roots blown out - I am going on week 9 of stretching my relaxer.

I should have known something was bound to go wrong after the stylist kept telling me my hair was going to break if I continued to stretch my relaxer out.

No matter how much I told her about me moisturizing my roots, not putting tension on the two textures, you know all the things you stretch pros taught me, she still tried to make me feel as if I had no idea what kind of damage I was doing to my hair by stretching.

Anyway, so as she was washing my hair she suggested that I get a garlic treatment. She also mixed it with Jojoba oil with it.

Well, when I got to the chair for her to set my hair it was full of FIST SIZE TANGLES!! I might as well of had dreads! Then she proceeded to try to BRUSH them out of my wet hair.

I told her it was okay, I would prefer to do it myself. Ladies, when I touched my hair and felt for myself what had happned, I could not beleive it. I immediatley jumped out of that chair, I could not afford any more damage done, and ran out of the salon with a dripping head full of tangles.

I ran home crying and hopped in the shower to try to gently comb them out. 2 buckets of tears, 2 bottles of clarifying shampoo, two bottles of conditioner & a hand full of hair later I got them out.

I am still in disbelief. This is going to be a major set back for me. Now I really have to cut my hair because it is all uneaven from the ripped hairs in the tangled knots. (Sigh)

Anyway, if this can be a help out of this, I learned that if your hair tangles up badly due to a non agreeing treatment. Use clarifying lotion to strip it from what ever caused it to tangle in the first place.

Dang Serenity!!!!

So sorry to hear about this (((hugs)))

It's funny though because I'm actually going thru something very similar with my hair. I went to the DS last week and requested a rinse but whatever off brand she used left my hair severly dry!! I've been conditioning for days to no avail. I've been suffering from a lot of breakage. Some of the ladies on the other forum gave me some good advice in regards to clarifying (the lightbulb hadn't gone off yet). First thing tommorow morning, I'm heading to Ulta to pick up some Kenra Clarifying shampoo (since I'm all of Elucence).

I really hope that you won't have to cut alot of your hair. I totally understand how you feel. Is this a salon that you've been to before?

I'm sorry to hear this. The conditioner made your hair tangle or the way the stylist was handling it or both???

Ooooh, sorry to hear that. It sucks when you try to "Treat" your hair by having it done professionally and they end up jacking it up! Hopefully the damage isn't as bad as you think. I would wait until after you get your relaxer to analyze it so you can tell if you will really nead a trim or not.

Oh my, I'm very sorry to hear this.:( I've experienced tangles and knots and the horrible feeling of ripping your hair out to detangle them. Don't worry, with a little time and a patience, I'm sure your hair will be back to the way it was in no time.:)

This is good advice. I am sorry about your experience. You did the RIGHT THING by walking up out of there, even with your wet head.

Yes--you did do the right thing by leaving! You are my hero today!!! I hope if a stylist is doing something crazy to my hair--i will have the courage to nip it in the bud like you!

Your hair is beautiful--I have your fotkie bookmarked on my PC---I know your hair will be back in shape in no time---and I hope it is not as bad as it first appeared and you won't have to cut too much!

I've been there before...not from a stylist but from me using Aphogee while I was like 12 weeks post. I had huge knots and i ripped out a good amount of hair. But the good news is that when i dried my hair, it wasn't noticeable. It hurted my feelings, but I didn't have to chop off inches. I only cut off 1/2inch the following week after my touchup. anyways, i think the learning point that I learned is that when you are stretching and your hair is rough (not smoooth cuticles), YOU CANNOT LET ANYONE PUT A PROTEIN TREATMENT IN YOUR HAIR. You need to do it yourself and you need to use a minimal amount of agitation or moving of the hair. that is what causes the knots. Even parting the hair in sections, applying the protein and braiding is a good way to eliminate the agitation and the hair knotting. and rinse in the shower.... this is my lesson learned. It's all good when u have a fresh perm...u can use a protein trtmnt any way u like it. but when u are stretching...be verrrrry careful and gentle.
good luck!

I had sort of a similiar experience this weekend, after doing my own hair for the past three months I just don't feel comfortable going to stylist anymore they are not as gentle to your hair as you will be nor do they care most of the times!

OMG!!! I'm soooo sorry this happened to you. I'm glad you ran up outta there...it would have only gotten worse. :(

Even though this sets you back a little, you'll be OK. We're here for ya!

Thanks ladies. You guys really are the best. You really know how to lift spirits with encouraging words. Thanks for being there.

Mrs. Mizani - Are you saying that the longer you stretch, your cuticles become more rough? If so, this is interesting, I wonder why?

Miss_Jetsetter - I have been to this salon before - they really caught me by surprise. The good thing about it is that she was very understanding in me leaving. Everyone else was just staring at me like I had the nappiest hair alive.

Nita - I am convinced that is was the conditioner coupled with her washing my hair ontop of my hair.

I was wondering if I should have waited until my hair dired to comb it out. What do you think?

Oh my, I'm sorry this happened. I believe it had alot to do with how she pooed your hair, when you pile the hair on top it can cause major tangles especially if you use a poo that's not moisturizing. Maybe you should get it stlyed and let a stylist looked at it to see if it's really that damaged. It may not be too bad that you have to cut it all off. Sometimes just the site of how much hair we may loose from tangles gives the thought that it's ruinned for good. :( Hopefully things will be A O.K. soon

Yeah, hate to say it but it seemed like it was a teach you a lesson maybe. All those warnings (even though you had been managing ok) then that happens. Sorry about your setback...I can relate. It sucks... {{{}}} I'm just proud of you for leaving...too many of us would have stuck it out..brush and all
