Homemade products on natural hair v. Processed hair

Is it just me or has anyone else here tried to go the natural route and make natural products for their hair, i.e. homemade moisturizer, leave-in, etc... and found that it does not work on your permed hair but you see LOADS of people here saying that it works for them and come to find out that they are natural?

I am STILL having a hard time finding a good moisturizer for my permed hair that is either just sitting on top of my strands looking oily or sucking it up and left dry a minute later. I even made my own shealoe from the various Youtubes out there. But that did not seem to work for my hair either. Oh and I notice from the various YT videos out there making their own shea butter; that they are all natural.

Are there anyone with processed hair that has made their own natural hair product with great success?

Very frustrating.:wallbash: Am I the only one???:look:

Maybe you just need something stronger than what nature can offer you. Half of that natural stuff I tried didn't work for my natural hair either. :ohwell: Just use what works. Sometimes you hear people raving about something and all these people start following suit, and then three months down the line the original pusher doesn't even use it anymore because it's not all what they hyped it up to be in the first place.

(QHEMET SUCKS, natural or relaxed BTW) :look:

Lots of natural products work on my hair. I do like Shea moisture leave in better than making my own though.

Traycee uses her own homemade shea butter mix, and she has a video on how she makes it as well.

i've made my own caramel treatment and it worked. I sometimes add natural stuff to my dc or as a dc. . . .what type of stuff have you tried? when was the last time you chelated? Your cuticle may have buildup and the goodies can't get in.

Yes. I saw her video. That is what made me try and make my own. Who makes the Shea Moisture Leave in?

Just the Shealoe I made.

The problem with permed hair is that products that are too moisturizing will leave the hair stringy and products with too much oil will leave it greasy, stringy and stiff.

I'm no longer relaxed, but two products that "might" work for you, because I don't find them too oily or overly moisturizing is:

Qhemet Burdock Root Cream - gives great sheen, light moisturization and soft hair. Not heavy imo for a natural product and smells nice and citrusy.

Ingredients: Contains Pure Mediterranean Olive Oil for softness and emollience, extracts of Burdock Root, Nettle Leaf, Oatstraw and Wheat for their conditioning, scalp nourishing, shine enhancing and hair growth properties. Vegetable glycerin for its humectancy and MSM sulfur for nourishment and healthy hair growth.

Donna Marie's Cocoa Hemp Buttermilk Leave-in Styling Cream - not greasy or overly moisturizing and smells like cookies! LOL! Gives great sheen. I used it in wet hair this morning, but I think it will work fine for dry hair.

Ingredients: Deionized water, aloe vera Leaf Juice, organic cocoa butter, sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Cream, Shea Butter, Hemp Seed Oil, soybean oil, cetearyl alcohol, vegetable emulsifier, agave nectar, vegetable glycerin, cellulose, vitamin e, marshmallow root extract, horsetail extract, nettle extract potassium sorbate, silver citrate, citric acid and Fragrance.

I think the key is to pay attention to INGREDIENTS regardless of texture and research them. Many naturals went out of their way to make products, because the stuff on the shelf for us was/is garbage in many cases.

When I go in the beauty supply I see a ton of moisturizing, sheeny, softening products for permed heads. Try one of them, check the ingredients and see if you can duplicate it on your own.

Yes. I saw her video. That is what made me try and make my own. Who makes the Shea Moisture Leave in?

Just the Shealoe I made.

try some other oils.

I use grapeseed oil, olive oil, i tried almond oil, but found it actually tried my hair out. . .it is great on my face though which tends to be oily.

some honey, molasses, rosemary, coconut oil. All of those things work for me.

I believe (not sure) it's made by the same people who make the Nubian Heritage products. I bought mine from beauty of new york.

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Deionized Water, Herbal Complex, Panthenol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Cocoa Butter, Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E

A little goes a LONG way.

I am natural and have been several times and Natural Products do not work for my hair, even when I was relaxed they didn't work for my hair. Shea butter, Shealoe, ALL Oils,Indian Powders etc. etc.. They just don't work, even the High Priced Natural Hair products don't work..

I make my own moisturizer and it works just fine. I had to play around with the ingredients a little before I found the right mixture, but it works better for me than any other daily moisturizer that I have tried.

I use the following ingredients: water, avocado butter, avocado oil, honeyquat, coconut oil, shea butter

Thanks for the advice. I made my Shealoe with: 100% Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Emu oil, Aloe Vera gel, Vitamine E oil, Rosemary and Vanilla oil.

Really? So what are you currently doing to moisturize your hair with?

Yea. I know I have to play around with stuff. :ohwell: I know my hair does not like Avocado and Coconut oil. I think it does not like Glycerin either. And I am starting to wonder if it does not like Aloe Vera too.

Right now I am just spritzing with water, until it gets warmer and I can go back to s-curl, it seems everything just makes my hair dryer, I have deep conditioned weekly and that helps. I know when it grows out it will get better, but right now with it being so short it is DRY DRY DRY! I am hydrated on the inside as well, but it is frustrating but I am dealing with it.

Have you tried home steaming with your favorite conditioner or baggying your whole head overnight?

Have you tried the oils with natural ceramides, (especially if you have a no-lye relaxer)? Wheat germ oil, hemp seed oil, etc. I love the Giovanni products and they contain wheat germ oil. There is a thread on oils with ceramides.

I know my hair loves anything with "cones" in them. But question, where can I buy actual "cones" (anything for hair) that maybe I can make my own hair product and add that to it? Any suggestions? I have no idea. Also Panthenol! Where can I get that too?

Never tried Giovanni. Especally now since I hear they changed the ingredients. Maybe I wll.

Could you send me the link to the oils with ceramides thread? Thx.

You know baggying is one thing I haven't tried, or steaming, How do you steam?
The way I did it was...

1. Apply conditioner to dry (or damp) hair.
2. Take a towel or turbin. Wet with hot water. As hot as you can take it. See if you can even put it in the microwave to make it hot. You may have to use gloves to handle it. Be careful.
3. Wrap it around your hair.
4. Put a plastic cap on top of that.
5. Place a net scarf (the kind you put on your rollers with the holes in it) to secure the cap on good.
6. Sit under the dryer for at least 20 to 30 mins.

You should be good then.:yep:

I'm making my own products. My relaxed hair loves it and I can see a total difference in my hair since moving into more natural hair care. My DC - Silicon Mix and my Silk Elements Leave-In Detangler are the only commercial products that I use on my hair - but I still added my special touch to both of them. When they run out.... I'm not sure. I think I'll learn how to make my own version of the detangler.

ETA: One more commercial product - Heat Protectant - Chi Silk

OOOHHHH! That is a good idea, I am gonna try it Tonight, I have a Turban, and plastic caps, my turban has a button to close, and I have a Salon chair dryer that this lady sold to me for $100, she wanted to put all new salon chair dryers in, and the old ones were fine. LOL!! I will let you know how this work! I guess I could do this weekly?

Yep. Yes you can. Or at least until your scalp and hair feels better.

What do you put in your silicon mix and leave in?

I created a caramel treatment mix (hair loved it) and added it to the Silicon Mix. Basically did this because I forgot I had a LOT of Silicon Mix and I want to use the caramel mix up - since there are little preservatives. I added molasses, banana food, honey, shea butter, coconut and olive oil. Obviously, you don't need all of this added but I didn't want to waste the products. Once I'm done with the Silicon Mix, I will probably use the jars and continue to use my Caramel mix alone.

My hair is reacting well with the natural products. I don't see changing back to commercial while my hair continues to thrive.

My leave in contains Silk, Aloe Juice, cones, and other chemicals that I am unable to pronounce. The bottle was half empty. I added aloe vera juice and castor oil. When I use the remainder, I will purchase silk amino acids, vegetable glycerin, add aloe vera juice (I use this for everything related to my skin), and castor oil.

For me finding the right products took a LOT of trial and error for the proper combinations.

HTH

For me, aloe gel is not very moisturizing, but aloe juice is a staple. Maybe try swapping out the gel for the juice and see how it works. I also find that jojoba is too light to do anything for me. Maybe trying some other oils will give better results.

Oh and for panthenol, check out www.organic-creations.com they have almost everything.
