Holy cow, I blew out my hair and... (pics)

My hair is the MOST moisturized and soft it's ever been with any straightening process I've ever tried.... I decided today after my co-wash to do what I jokingly called a "white girl blow out." So I co-washed with a mix of Organix Vanilla Silk Conditioner and Nexxus Humectress (wanted to use my expensive Nexxus because I knew I had the intention of blowing it out). I detangled with my shower comb - before doing that I put in Salerm 21 and a dab of HE LTR Leave-in, sealed with my castor/coconut oil mix, and sprayed on heat protectant (Tresemme Heat Tamer which I had added some coconut oil to and SAA). I'm into mixing stuff as you can see:rolleyes:. I lightly blow dried my hair with a warm heat and low setting - Andis Tourmaline/Ionic colorwaves dryer. I used a wide tooth comb to facilitate the process. I only dried it til it was about 80% dry - so it still had some dampness. I sectioned off small parts from ear to ear as though I was going to flat iron and put the rest up and out of the way with a clip.

I used my new Conair Tourmaline/Ceramic roundbrush with the dryer and lightly turned the brush as I went down the length of the hair. I made sure to place a concentration nozzle on the dryer itself, and directed the air DOWN the hair shaft and over the brush. The temp was set to Warm Temp/High Speed. It wasn't smoking hot AT ALL. I did this until my entire head was done. I lost little hair, Just some sheds, and yes there was some breakage, but not a lot at all which surprised me. I think I lost more hair when I roller set the other day. When I was done I wanted a little more of a bump on the ends so I set my ends on jumbo caruso rollers.

The end result was AMAZING! My hair was swinging, and I notice that my hair is SO INCREDIBLY MOISTURIZED. Lately when I have tried to rollerset/blow roots, my hair feels dry. And when I flat iron once in a blue moon I feel like my hair catches on itself if I run my fingers through it... Now my hands can glide RIGHT THROUGH, and my hair is light and blowing in the wind.:yep: I was so afraid to try this, but this seems to be the best way for me to do straight styles - and I am 8 weeks post with 8 weeks more to go til touch-up time (stopped transitioning, wasn't ready). I have NOT been doing straight styles anyway, just braidouts/twistouts/bantu knot outs and straighten maybe 1x a week to every 2 weeks. Just what I need, yet ANOTHER method and reason to use heat, lol. MODERATION!!:look:

That looks really good. Your hair looks so fluffy and the gloss is good. Great job.

PS. I forgot about the blow dryer...let me break mine out. Maybe I can get back to co-washing again.
I have gotten lazy for the last month.
Thanks for posting this...so encouraging.

Thanks so much you guys. I'm thankful that my hair is responding well to my care for it, of course I wish I was WL already, lol, but I'm being patient and hope to be APL by Dec 08.

I had watched a few videos on youtube on how to do this properly. Of course all of the videos were with white stylists and white hair models, but they do this all the time hence my name for it. The results are much better than when I flat iron, so I may just be doing this if I want to rock my hair straight. When I set on my Carusos, the curls are SUPERB. Also the type of tools you use are VERY important, including the type of brush and dryer. One of the tips I picked up is to use the roundbrush with the boar bristles because they can help to distrubute your scalps natural oils down the hair shaft and they grab onto the hair better which aids in the straightening of the strands. If you do it in SMALL sections then you'll have no problems with breakage and tangling. I found that using the non-boar bristle round brush catches and tangles my hair - and the stylists have said this happens. Here's the one I use:

It has boar bristles and bristles with the little balls on them. It's pretty gentle on the hair if you are patient. Another tip was to make sure you dry DOWNWARDS or if you hold the hair up toward the ceiling, that you aim the air from root to tip. Anything else will cause tangles. The brush is Ceramic/Tourmaline and the dryer I have is Tourmaline/Ionic and those things combined help the hair to retain more moisture during the drying process and are not as harsh as dryers that don't have these features.

That looks like the same brush I have and it gets tangled in my hair sometimes.
I think I'll do some youtube searches. I'm sure I doing something wrong :drunk:

Pretty!!! So shiny!

(I don't even know WHY I came in here, you always got me wanting to run to the dang store  )

Thanks guys so much! :yep: The softness and bling factor still held up after I woke up this morning, I just set the front part on some carusos and went about my day. I think the castor/coconut oil combo helped with the shine because I hardly used serum. Oh and my beloved SEBASTIAN POTION 9!! That's what probably did it, I forgot to mention I put some on as well.

Tiffers, you know I'm ssoooooooooooo out to ruin you right... :assimilat:dizzy::kick:

Thanks blaque.

Ladies here are 2 of the videos I watched on YouTube. Although there are LOTS on there so just watch enough of them til you feel you've got the hang of it and confidence to try it if curious. Small sections for our hair is key, and you DON'T need blazing high heat to do it either.

This first video I really liked it was by Elle Magazine on their channel called ElleStyle.

And this lady has a number of videos on Expert Village but I can't seem to figure out what order they go in, so I'm going to put up the one where she talks about different brushes and technique, but if you have time browse her other videos on the topic, they're pretty short.

Nope they dont. I only use a small amount while the hair is still wet so I don't have to use so much product. Plus I feel like the different layers of "stuff" protects my hair and benefits it in different ways, lol. From here to my next wash though I really don't apply - or feel like I have to apply - anything else. When I straighten my hair I usually rock it straight for 2 or maybe 3 days before washing again and doing braidouts/twistouts/bantu knot outs.

Pretty Shine! wow!
