Hold Up. Aren't there some straightened naturals that get good growth?

My cousin is a straightened natural. I'm assuming she goes every 2 weeks and gets her hair straightened and goes from there. Her hair has always been long, but it's not breaking off or anything.

Has anyone here had successful growth with this method? I am not big on the waiting 2 weeks to wash my hair though. For me washing my hair is too much fun!

Anyway.. I hope someone can chime in here. I was reading about the amazing results of the daily co-wash and bunners. I was just wondering about other successful NATURAL techniques.

I think I might remember that thread, Luciousladie, now that you mention it. I guess I should have searched it out before I got all het up and posted this one.

My stylist is natural and washes, blowdries and straightens every week, she retains major growth. She says it's all about products and being gentle with the hair....
Here's the reggie we both use:
pre-poos with conditioner alternating protein with non-protein
Shampoo with a stimulating shampoo
deep conditions 3x a month
detangles for about an hour, she says its a big step in saving hair
leavins are important before blow drying
curls with a temp of 400

Her hair went from about 3 inches to 8 inches in one year! And she eats poorly.

check out threads and posts by pinkskates and irresistible. they both have super long hair and they both use heat whenever they want.

I'm sitting here DC'ing right now preparing for a flatiron job. I flatiron every 2/3 wks and I haven't had any retention problems. Siggy shows 4 mos. progress using heat. I seriously doubt that I would retain more if I refrained from heat.

I use heat every week. I rollerset and flatiron once a week in the summer. Once it gets past 75 degrees I just co-wash daily until mid-September. I have no problems retaining length. With me it's about deep conditioning, heat protectants, protective styling at night and dusting.

I have a few friends (they aren't on hair boards) who are BSL and beyond who are straight naturals. I'm a believer.

When I first started my transition before I taught myself all these natural styles, all I knew how to do was straighten to blend the two textures. I kept that up for like three years with no break and I reached bsl. I now use heat much less...but if I wanted to I could straighten my hair for the rest of the year and still retain length...I have thick coarse resilient strands that can take it.

I have been straightening because I wanted to bun during the winter months. I can't make a neat bun without my hair being straightened. Now I am kind of addicted to my purty silky straight hair. :)

If I continue to wear a bun to protect my ends, I feel I need to straighten.

Or I can braid out, lose the heat and NOT protect my ends.

Dilemma. LOL

Thanks BMP. This worries me a bit because I don't think I have "thick, coarse, resilient" strands.

see...that's what i thought too...and then i realized i flatironed everyday for about a year during my sophomore year of high school because i was obsessed with having bone straight hair and i didn't know how to wrap. i went from just above CBL to APL during that time. :perplexed:drunk:
NOT suggesting that was a good practice or even good retention, but it just goes to show that fine hair is not necessarily as fragile as you think...and heat is definitely not always the devil for retention.

I have no problems retaining and growing hair as a straighten natural. I get my presses dones every 2 and a half- 3 wks. In the winter months I can go up to 4 weeks.
