Henna'd for the 1st time..help!

Please help me, I just applied henna for the first time. I was praying the whole time and my hair came out nice, but it feels kind of hard and when I started to comb through it, I realized I must still have some in my hair because it feels gritty. I am going to rinse again, but can I put a conditioner on it to soften it or will that strip the henna. Anxiously awaiting your answers!

I actually use shampoo to help rinse it out, too.

Thanks. Right after I posted I was not able to get back on the forum (database error), so I just put a little humectress in my hair and got back in the shower and re-rinsed. That made it a bit softer so that I could comb through it. Drying naturally..I will wait to see the results tomorrow. Thanks again for your response.

When I henna my hair, I use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner or drench it in a moisturizing conditioner, which helps greatly w/ rinsing the henna from my hair.

I had the same experience and the day after I hennaed it was so hard that I did an hour of deep cond' with a heat cap. The results were shiny, soft, moisturized hair! You must must must deep condition after you henna IMO It will not strip the color but IMHO, that hardness will eventually cause breakage. You might also try using evoo in your henna mix. I did my first henna treatment tonight (1-12-07). I was doing it to cover the gray on my 35 year old head! Anyway, I ordered 3 samples of indigo because I didn't want red hair. As I type, I am deep conditioning but before I put the bag on to sit up under my heat cap, I noticed that my gray hair is a strawberry-blonde color! Not exactly the look I was going for. Also, the henna didn't completely cover the gray.

Oh, well. Sometime next week, I'll order some more indigo to correct the problem. BTW, I would have deep conditioned whether it stripped the color or not. Better to be safe than sorry, IMHO.

Glad to hear your hair softened after you applied the humectress!

Newbie here again: At what point in the hair care process would you apply henna? I have some ordered and on the way to me (just a sample), and want to do it right (after my strand test first); I'm scared to do it, too!

I henna'd for the first time yesterday! I applied conditioner after bc, my hair felt hard and it was difficult to get the henna out. I don't think the henna had enough moisture in it. Live and learn. My color came out kind of reddish on dk brown hair.
In the threads I've read it gets better with each application. So, I'll try again!

Thanks to all who answered my pleas for help. I am now hooked on henna . My hair seems much stronger now and the body and shine is unreal. I did mix the henna with an egg and I think next time I will add some type of oil, I have read some threads where others have done that. I have seen very little breakage (like 8 to 10 strands total) and It has also seemed to have loosened my hair texture. Thanks again for all of your advice and encouragement. You ladies are the best!
