HENNA UPDATE- HAD TO DO 2ND BC

I'm speechless that you have again felt the need to bc. I agree with the poster up thread who said to just stick with what you know for the next few years. I'm sorry that you've had another setback. Something just doesn't seem right here. Do you think that you are giving your hair a real chance? Or do you think that maybe you are just cutting out of frustration, like if one thing goes a little off you cut?

If it were only a little off, I would have kept it. Most of the hair in the front was bone strait. The front would not curl at all. :nono: My natural journey was growing well and I was able to twist it to protective style. There was a need to BC because it was damaged. I lost curl definition. There is no sabotage here. I just don't get why you think I would cut out of frustration. For the first time, I was actually getting the hang of my natural hair and loving it. I thought henna would be a more healthy way to color my hair. How would I know that I would lose the curl definition in my hair? I just celebrated 6 months without a relaxer and I have no intention of getting one. This thread is more discouraging than the henna damage. I'm not discouraged about my BC because I just removed damaged hair. I am discouraged that some really think about my character.

Im with u all the way if thats what u had to do thats what u had to do. Same thing happen to me except i used cassia and im natural and i have never had any type of dye in my hair. I had a mixture of 3c/4a and now i dont know what it is. At first my hair was like urs no definition at all but i dont have the heart to chop it off so i just continued my regular rotuine with DC. Now in the crown and front of my head i have basically no definition and in the back loose waves. In order to get any type of wave or curl i have to put lots of product and srunch. So i know how u feel

My question was not meant to be harsh and I'm sorry if it came out that way. I was thinking through a process as I spoke. I have cut my hair out of anger and frustration because it didn't look "perfect" in the past. Twice I cut tons of my hair years ago because I hadn't learned about how to keep my hair properly moisturized and I thought that since my hair was dry and effed up (it wasnt, I just didn't know better at the time)i would just cut and cut and cut at the slightest infraction. I was I guess wondering if maybe you had the same thing going on that I had years ago.

But if you say that your hair was truly damaged and beyond repair so be it. I really do hope you will just let your hair be for a little while, stay away from products and techniques that are new for you and just stick with what works. It seems like long, thick and healthy hair is what you are striving for but all these set backs and start overs are doing you in.

Sorry that happened to you! lesson learned and at least you found a cool stylist..maybe she will help you bring your hair back healthier and stronger..happy growing!

ps DD, I'm sorry if you are discouraged by the thread. A ton of us have been following your progress and when you post about a set back I know I'm always like "what is going on!??!" I for one will be your biggest cheerleader if you continue to hang in there and stick with what works. Hang in there and I'm truly sorry for the set back

Please don't get upset DD. I don't think it's that serious; to me, folks seem to be questioning your hair related decisions rather than your character. Not to defend anyone (cuz we're all grown here right :yep:), but I think what you may be picking up on is some confusion about your several setbacks/transitions/BCs over the last couple of years. When I first joined the board, I think you were right in the middle of your last one, and I thought I remember you promising to KIS from then on. I don't know if including henna in your reggie, with all its inherent risks (including slight-severe curl loosening), can qualify as such.

In any event, what's done is done, so enjoy your new TWA. And don't be so easily discouraged....we're all here to help :D

I used the Nupur 9 blend henna. I used water and honey in my mix. I only left it on for 15-20 minutes because I did not care for the color I was seeing in my grays. I did a DC with ORS mayo...I found out later that was a no no after it left me with brick like hair. I did a co wash after and my hair was very soft, but I had very little curl definition. I finally decided to go to a stylist and cut out the damage. I am a henna newbie, so please don't let my situation scare you. My hair just seems to do better with the chemical hair dyes. I should have stuck to doing a semi perm rinse. I do plan to enjoy my TWA status, but I do miss my twists.:ohwell: I had a Thread on my henna incident called Henna Gave My Grays A Weird Color...or something like it to describe what happened to me. I
missed the thickness of my hair after the henna. It felt soft, but it was very damaged.
Thank you ladies for your support.
hello dd, im terribly sorry about ur incident,
i can only imagine how u felt ,i love you spirit and courage to just start over, howevr i coulnt help but to notice that after u washed the henna out you dc with mayo condish which is a mild protein and could of led to your hair being hard as a brick... lots of moisture wouldve done the trick.....

I did a DC with a really good conditioner. I did not have the helmet effect after that. However, the straitened texture did not revert. :nono:

I know my past record, so I know you meant well.:yep: For the first time in my life I am really encouraged as far as my natural hair goes. In the past, I would've just slapped a relaxer on and called it quits. I really am looking forward to recovering from this. I was actually able to style my hair in twists before this incident. I am looking forward to doing it again in the future. I BCD because most of the hair was strait and damaged. I could not style it and I could not blend the rest of my hair to match the "strait" texture.

I didn't read all of the responses, but I saw you only used honey and water with your henna. Where did you see that recipe? It's easily searchable that henna mixes for textured hair require conditioner and/or oil. What reference did you use before you decided to henna?

Also, the weight of the henna on your hair possibly loosened up your hair temporarily. It needed moisture, moisture, moisture and not protein. But, you'd know better than us. I'm truly sorry you had another setback. I agree that you may want to stick with the basics for a while. HHJ

My curl is much looser in the front and crown. I believe it's very common. Any little thing can make my hair there straight. It takes a tight twist and a prayer to get it to somewhat match the rest of my coils.

Take the time to get to know your hair, it's habits, it's varying textures before you venture into extra stuff.

I have a looser curl there as well, but it wasn't strait. My hair looked like I was transitioning.:ohwell:

ONLY 15 MINUTES? Are you sure that wasn't a relaxer? Folks keep henna on their hair for 6+ hours and don't have that type of damage... I guess.

I'm gonna second the wig/braids idea. I've been lurking for a hot minute and you've done several BC's. Just keep the regimen simple and you should be all set.

This is not directed at OP, but to those who would read this thread and become excitedly frightful regarding henna:

There is no product that if used for a total time of 15 mins which will permanently (or temporarily for that matter) straighten or "damage" the hair. Even a relaxer will not give complete straightness within that time frame, unless you have less than 4" of hair and a lightening fast stylist.

I do not know the circumstances that created OP's problem, and it is inconsequential; what is important is that henna, with the application/waiting time of 15 mins, mixed with water and honey, and not left to develop 3+ hours can not give permanent straightness.

If it could, henna relaxer would be marketed as the first true "natural relaxer" on the market.

There are a plethora of websites and research conducted on henna.

Take care.

DD, no one in here is trying to discourage you or discredit your character. We are just concerned for you. You've been here since 2004 and have not been consistent with any type of regimen or natural journey/chemical process. For you to still be having issues some 6+ years later, maybe you could take heed to some of the advice we have for you. There are a lot of people who have done multiple BC's; I've done it twice and then did a major cut back in August. But BC'ing every other day is not going to help you if you don't give your hair a chance. I'm not saying that you should hold onto damage, but you should find something that works and stick to it if it seems that every lil thing will cause you a setback.

Let's get it together for 2011, ok, DD? We're here for you.

Obviously not everyone will have the same reaction to henna but just leaving it on for 15 minutes and having that reaction just sounds impossible. I do of some women who have seen drastic curl loosening with the first application(leaving it on for 4hrs or more), but they never cut. Eventually their hair returned back to normal.

Using water and honey with that particular blend is normally fine. Since Henna is a tannin(acts like protein) using a protein rich conditioner wasn't the best idea which is probably where things went wrong. Doing multiple dc's with a moisture rich conditioner should have worked. Also I know most people don't do this but a strand test should be done, just in case!

Either way sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience.

I must admit I have the Nupur 9 blend in my cart on amazon.com and was thinking about buying it until now..I don't mind the loosened texture, but I am worried about my hair breaking off..Can't afford no setbacks..

ive used the napur 9 blend before and still have some left.
like others have mentioned it is practically impossible for henna to mess up your hair in a matter of only 15 minutes. if you read the 100 threads around here (not saying you havent already) on henna you will find that henna needs to be left of a minimum of 2 hours. most people though leave it on for 4 hours to overnight.
yes it does loosen your hair but its only temporary. not only that but the blend you have isnt even straight henna which will def. cause major loosening on some. the blend you have have other herbs added which counter act the loosening.
also regarding the color, of course it colored your hair oranged. you only left it on 15 minutes. the color darkens the longer you leave in it. the purpose of henna as far as color goes is to color it red. 15 minutes will yield orange with very little conditioning.

even though you know your hair better that we do, IMO your hair would have bounced back because henna is temporary. it will not permanantly straighten your hair.
