TRANSITION OVER! 11-22-14
I am no longer toting a medium size fro. I'm back to a TWA because my hair was badly damaged from the henna.:ohwell: I finally conceded defeat and let a stylist snip away at least 3" of my damaged fro. Good news...it will grow back and I found a really good stylist in the process. I tried to keep the length, but my curls were so limp and lifeless. I am officially back to normal as far as my natural hair goes. I don't have enough hair to twist anymore and that's the saddest part of my BC.:nono: Just thought I'd let you ladies know my progress. I guess I can't protective style for awhile, so I will be refreshing my wash n go with Oyin's Frank Juice in the morning.

What kind of henna did you use, and how did you mix it. Did you DC afterwards? I'm planning on hennaing today. My henna's already mixed. Now I'm nervous.

Sorry you had to do a second bc DD. I have been afraid of trying henna and now I'll probably never use it. Your hair will be back to its initial length in no time. Just try to enjoy your twa.

Wow DD...I had no idea that you had a Henna setback!!!! Well, at least you have found a good stylist! :congrats: for the little things (and that ain't such a small thing!)!

Wow. What kind of henna did you use? I have never had any issues with henna. How exactly was it damaged?

I still feel the quality of Henna has alot to do with it as well as the Application (Process).

Keeping your Moisture Levels up are one of the biggest things when using Henna. For Me, it works best on Freshly Co-Washed Hair, Rinsing with Conditioner, Following Up with Deep Conditioning and watching your Moisture Levels during your Daily Treatments:yep:

You only used it once didn't you? How long did you leave it on & what did you mix it with?

Anyways, sorry you had to cut again.

First let me say that I am so sorry to hear that.... however I have never known of henna damaging the hair unless it is the store kind that says black/brown/red henna etc. From what I've read these have metallic salts or ppd (?) and it will damage your hair if you have a relaxer or color treated hair. Which kind did you use? I know for relaxed and color treated hair you have to use the BAQ or natural henna. Hopefully you can identify the culprit because henna has been instrumental in the thickness and over all health of my hair. I would hate for others to be denied this opportunity just based on one bad experience that may not be related to henna. If you could post more specific information on what you use how often etc. maybe as a group we can help identify if henna was actually responsible for the breakage.

Sorry you had a setback DD. You have to come back and tell us all the details of what you used and how you used it.

I've been using henna (and indigo) for years and have never had a problem that moisturizing couldn't fix.

I used the Nupur 9 blend henna. I used water and honey in my mix. I only left it on for 15-20 minutes because I did not care for the color I was seeing in my grays. I did a DC with ORS mayo...I found out later that was a no no after it left me with brick like hair. I did a co wash after and my hair was very soft, but I had very little curl definition. I finally decided to go to a stylist and cut out the damage. I am a henna newbie, so please don't let my situation scare you. My hair just seems to do better with the chemical hair dyes. I should have stuck to doing a semi perm rinse. I do plan to enjoy my TWA status, but I do miss my twists.:ohwell: I had a Thread on my henna incident called Henna Gave My Grays A Weird Color...or something like it to describe what happened to me. I missed the thickness of my hair after the henna. It felt soft, but it was very damaged. Thank you ladies for your support.

Le Gasp!! I didn't even know you BC'd again DD!! I'm so sorry to hear about your set-back though! Are you sure the hair was damaged? Was it breaking? Split ends? How long after the henna incident did you BC again?

I'm just curious because I've heard of henna loosening the curl pattern a little, and I wondered if it was this or was your hair actually damaged.

Either way it'll grow back, and you'll have nice, blunt ends to boot! :yep:

It was badly damaged. Some places the curl pattern was loose other places non existent.:nono: My hair wouldn't even hold twists in those spots. That's why I gave up and did a second BC.

DD, and I mean this out of genuine sincerity and concern, don't try anything new on your hair for the next 1-2 years. Just pick your main staple products and stick to a simple regimen for as long as you can. If you co-wash daily, just co-wash and moisturize, shampoo as needed. That's it. NO NEW EXPERIMENTS, no new chemicals, don't even color.....just do the very basic steps, ok? If you stick to this, you will not keep having setbacks with various new products and having to BC over and over again.

You didn't have to cut your hair. Henna's curl loosening effects aren't permanent. All you needed was a few moisture DCs. Some people notice it takes a couple of DCs before their hair returns to feeling soft.

Let the church say Amen

You're been sounding really indecisive for a couple of months. You really need to find a good wig, and just wash and DC your hair in between. You are using and doing way too much.

Aw, I'm sorry! I just wish you had started a thread or PMed someone or something before cutting. They could have let you know that your hair wasn't damaged, and you wouldn't have had to cut.

But at least you found a nice stylist and you have some nice fresh ends to work with. You hair will be back before you know it, you just have to stick to a consistent regimen. :yep:

This post literally made me :lachen:

Yes, henna is known to loosen the curl pattern on some. There was no need to bc. :ohwell:

Different people have different reactions. I may not be a natural guru with some things, but I do know the different between healthy and damaged hair, especially the hair on my head. Not all have had a love/ love relationship with henna. I count it as another thing I learned about my hair. I truly appreciate the concern. Thanks.:yep:

I haven't been indecisive about my hair since I BCD. No amount of washing and DCing will fix damaged hair. That's why I cut it.

I'm speechless that you have again felt the need to bc. I agree with the poster up thread who said to just stick with what you know for the next few years. I'm sorry that you've had another setback. Something just doesn't seem right here. Do you think that you are giving your hair a real chance? Or do you think that maybe you are just cutting out of frustration, like if one thing goes a little off you cut?

guuuuurrrrl i didn't speak on it but I did my & the mom's first 2 henna treatments within the last 2 weeks

all i can say my mom's colored, relaxed hair is shedding :look:, and shedding:look:

and shedding:blush::blush::blush:

yah... ummmm, I'm working on that (in hopes not to be sued by the mom's):perplexed

Upping the Moisture is the Name of the Game. Rinsing with Conditioner, Deep Conditioning with Moisture Afterwards AND Using Moisture related products during your daily hair care regimen.

I cannot stress this enough: MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE.

I am relaxed as well (and had color when I switched to Henna/Indigo).

Never had any "Sheddding" Body Art Quality Henna for Chemically Treated & African American Hair.

What did you use?

She used Nupur henna. Matter of fact, I have it on my head right now.

There was no need for another chop, as said earlier, but what's done is done. Just use what's been working for you and don't deviate!

I've come to the conclusion that Henna isn't for everyone. You know the saying "just because it's natural it doesn't mean it's good for you".Don't get me wrong I am a henna head myself. But it took me alot of bad experiences to finally start getting good results with henna. I decided just today that I will no longer continue with henna because I can't keep curls in my hair with henna. They come back for a little while if I mix amla with it.
