Heat Use Once a Week

I've been using heat once a week for a very long time and I've always had good retention. I either roller set it and dry under a hooded dryer or I wrap it old school style, let it air dry over night, and comb it down and flat iron in the morning. Either way , I only use heat once on wash day and my hair holds really well if I wrap and tie it up every night.
ETA: I have relaxed 4B hair, medium strands.

Me, I've been using it once a week and my retention is close to 100%.
I wash blow dry and straighten around once a week.

i will be using heat once a week. heat really isn't a problem for me, as long as it is not excessive and it is done on clean hair. temp setting plays a major part too.

Might be useful to know if people have fine, medium or thick strands etc..

I have fine strands and I'd think a thicker haired person could take heat on a regular basis. I may be wrong.

Good question since I was moving in this direction. I think it would also be good to ask what hair type. In my unprofessional opinion it seems that type 1, 2, and 3 have a looser curl pattern and it is easier for them to straighten, retain, etc. While those like me with type 4 fine hair have more of a challenge. I may move away from the heat again though (not that I ever started using it but I contemplated). I use the oil rinsing method and top it off with Hawaiian Silky for super soft hair. I have more tweeking to do but I think I may be on to something. BTW I'm natural.

I am natural and have 4a/b fine hair and I use heat weekly. I retain my hair length better straightening my hair versus protecting styling. I found protecting styling created a lot of breakage resulting in constant trimming. I also use a low heat setting for both blow dryer and flat iron. My hair loves Joico Moisture Recovery conditioner, this stuff helps protect my hair from the heat resulting in great reduction in breakage/damage. You have to learn what is best for your hair and products as well!

Thanks for the response! I am just now coming out of sew in weaves (that ive been wearing for about three years..far too long I know) I've gained great length but some thinness overall. I noticed in the past when I tried to use minimun heat i.e airdrying and things like that I experienced a lot of breakage. My hair likes heat.

Its hard to get moisture while wearing a weave or cornrows.
I think the longer my hair get I will probably just blow dry & pull back
Ill try it this stretch. fingers crossed

I tried heat once a week w/blow dry + flat iron. My 4b natural hair suffered. Your hair may survive if you have a loose texture; use lower heat; or if you're only blowdrying.

This is the same for me. Protective styling doesn't work for me. My hair in its natural state is rough but when straighten my hair has bling, swang and is moisturized.

My sister on the other hand. She needs to stick to protective styling. Her hair isn't progressing at all. But when she was transitioning her hair was so lush & growing quickly.

when i use heat regularly i retain most of my length. I keep getting lazy though and putting my hair into buns which eats up my progress.:ohwell:

I use heat on every wash day 2x/week. I air dry then use my curling iron on no higher than 300, I hold the curl only a brief few seconds and I section a little thicker than most probably do (not paper thin sections). always heat protectant and I think my hair does okay, good enough for me. My hair does better with smooth styling.

I use indirect heat, then PS from there. IMO, its all about the heat protectant when you use heat, regardless of direct or indirect.

Wait, what? So protective styling doesn't work for everyone?

For some, no.

For me, PS works really well when I wear my hair straight. I am able to comb my hair better and not have many shed hairs on wash days, but can shed hair in between wash days successfully.

When my hair is air dried, I usually have to do a twist/braid out and once my hair is set, there is no combing, detangling, nothing. So when I wash, its shed hair city, and some of those hairs tangle on each other. Sometimes, they do that as I am taking out the twist!:ohwell: If I do not do a twist/braid out and just air dry and act cute with big hair; forget about it. Its even worse for me. PS-ing with air dried hair is truly not the move for me.

Sometimes, no heat is just a relief for my arms and less time styling, but at the end of the week, once those rollers have to be set, I sometimes curse myself for being so darn lazy. :nono:

I wash blow dry (flat iron NG) and hot roll roughly once a week. I relax every 5-6 mo. I do not use heat at any other time. Sometimes Bantu knot. I've found that getting my hair in a tamed state means styling the rest of the week is easy. Probably seems counterintuitive but I manipulate less with this method. I brush my hair every night, pin it up loosely and sleep on a satin pillowcase. I grew up roller setting but as an adult I'm looking for the perfect mix of quick style low maintenance with length retention and damage minimizing. I'm 3c-4a very porous thick. I use silicones too. In the past I tried flatironing the length of my hair weekly but it did start breaking. Now I only flat iron NG. When I wash I blowdry 85-90% twist into 2 Bantu knots ( like Princess Leia) for 10 min while my iron heats up. Then I take down, iron roots pop in hot rollers. Looks like a rollerset with no time under the dryer. I do this routine about every 7 days. Hth

Some people get seriously bad SSKs, scalp and root issues with protective styling. I wear my hair down the majority of the time and my hair is thriving that way. Easier to moisturise, easier to detangle, easier to retain. If I'm ever in a bun, it's because I did some terrible hair experiment on the weekend. :look:

I like this!! I may try this soon

I'm down to 1x every two weeks. My hair likes heat. I can't go curly or wash n go too much, it gets too tangled and lots of shedding. Its easier to manage after straightening and using heat. I blow dry then use Caruso's. Oh and I flat iron roots only. I have 3C hair

Wow I only use heat every 3 to 4 months for a light trim. Any more than that and I would go bald. Totally jealous of all of you!!!!!!

I blowdry Dominican style with round brushes, then flat iron afterwards on 340 degrees, once a week, twice if I have an event to go to over the weekend, etc. I usually let my hair grow to MBL, then cut it back to APL every 6 months.

ETA: I'm relaxed and have thick strands
