Like you feel like you still wasn't happy with your hair? What made you continue? Can you give some words of encouragement for the ones that may feel like giving up sometimes? Thanks in advance ladies

When I started my journey my hair actually started to look worse before it got better. I was extremely discouraged until I realized that I was sabotaging myself. I jumped on too many bandwagons and bought way too many products. The best advice I can give you is to Be patient and don't give up. Don't try every product you hear rave reviews on, don't join every challenge and don't compare your journey to someone else's. It does get easier. Don't give up! :-)

What she said! ^^^

I say join 2 challenges, no more than that and you'll find tons of support. Definitely don't buy every product under the sun. Experiment and whatever works, try to stick with it for a while. I can't speak for all long haired ladies, but I bet that the majority of us women with long hair keep it simple. No need to slap on a million products at once to get your hair to grow.

I was not very militant with my hair either. I transitioned to natural, did the big chop, and alternated between curly and straight because it made me HAPPY. At the end of the day I only wanted to make myself happy. Of course use heat with caution if your hair can't tolerate it.

How did I keep myself going? Reading blogs, looking at Fotki pictures, reading posts and seeing what others are doing. I have a Fotki and I took pictures every month to document my journey. It helped me while I was going. Now that I no longer update it as much, it now helps others stay motivated and that's why I keep it.

I tend to get frustrated when I'm in that in between stage. This time around I did as BostonMaria said; read a lot of blogs and viewed Fotki pics. YouTube videos helped too, but I think most of all what has really helped me to be patient (and see great results) is wearing protective styles and keeping it simple. I'm natural now so it's usually a puff, twists or corn rows. When it's in the twists or corn rows I'm not constantly looking and measuring it, playing with it, trying all of those different butters and moisturizers. I just shampoo, condition, moisturize daily or every other day then kinda forget about it.

I never understood "giving up"....I mean, I can't go back to not washing my hair for two weeks at a time....my scalp would jump off my skull, and run away! I don't think using a million n one products is the point of a HHJ, I think it's just to start doing Healthy Hair practices. So, how do you give up on moisturizing your hair properly, or DC'ing when your hair needs it? That's like saying you're tired of bathing every day with soap, and miss the old days when you'd splash yourself with water every other week...

I mean it's one thing to say you're done with trying to grow your hair down to your ankles...but giving up on healthy hair?

Honestly I never have. I either had to learn how my hair was better able to retain length or stay at SL for another 20 yrs. That wasn't an option for me.

I didn't mean that t that extreme extent lol

Lol, no its just that I've been seeing this for a while on Hairlista, and it always puzzles the heck outta me. Like...how do you "give up" now that you know better?

Excellent point! I feel a little lazy nowadays, but definitely not enough to just completely give up. I just recently cut down on my washing from twice a week to once.

This is so funny, but its exactly how I feel. Now that I know better there's no way I'm going back. I'm also not looking for miracles. I know that if I follow a healthy regimen my hair will grow. As long as you keep it in perspective and be realistic there's no reason to want to give up.

I remember being discouraged when I only retained 1.5 inches the first year of my hair journey. I almost didn't even take a picture I was so disgusted. Then I thought about all the things I'd accomplished and reasoned that if I could methodically approach all those things & meet with success then I could do the same with my hair (I really had to go there with myself). I cut way back on manipulation and continued with moisture and that was it.

Also, I kept myself motivated by looking at hair pics kindly posted by Jupiter Moon and Longhairdontcare2011. I kept thinking that if they could do it I could too (even though I could not really really believe that my hair could reach wl or hl).
