Has cowashing ever had negative effects on your hair?

After reading her entry I think that it is more about product/ingredient usage then co washing exclusively. However, like she said if co washing stops working doing something different is advised.

So she had problems constantly cowashing with cone-y conditioners. All of these problems (dull hair, thinning edges) happened because of the cones and other stuff in HE conditioners built up on her hair and scalp.

All she had to do was either:

A) Cowash with something more natural.

B) Clarify with shampoo.

Her problems magically disappeared when she started using natural products and oiling her scalp... which is what she could have done when she was cowashing.

After reading, I still don't see what her problem with cowashing is. The problem was with the products she was using, not the cowashing itself. Duh.

I agree totally with tiffers

you have to know what products you're using and wether co-washing exclusivly will suffice.

when I was relaxed co-washing saved my hair - basically only poo washed once a month

now that Im natural and using more oils/butters and thicker products I find that cowashing does not work for me in fact it made my hair dry and I smelled like a wet dog.

so to answer the question .... yes

I gotta agree with ya'll... Even if you have a difficult scalp issue cowashing can still have positive effects UNLESS you're using the wrong products OR have an extremely oily scalp BEFORE you started cowashing.
Vo5 Kiwi Lime and GTTT con cleans my scalp like shampoo
meanwhile even if I put HEHH on my ends it still somehow gets to my scalp and leaves build up. Just depends but she can't really knock it cause she hasn't CORRECTLY tried it. One key to a no poo reggie is using CONE FREE cons

Yes, my hair was overmoisturized. I had to deep condition with a protein conditioner for 4 weeks for my hair to turn back from being limp. By cowashing consistently, I upset my moisture/protein balance. Now I am back on track. I referred to a thread on this site for information on my over moisturized hair.

I could never be a no-poo person. Shampoo both with and w/o sulphates are an essential part of my life. I need the squeaky clean feeling my scalp gets from them. I cringe at the thought that people apply conditioner to their scalps. To me (and maybe only me) conditioners are for conditioning HAIR and COATING it with a protectant "film", not for my scalp. I don't even apply conditioner to my scalp when conditioning. I know it's impractical to believe it doesn't get on my scalp, but I take extra care to minimize that because the thought of conditioner on my scalp just makes my head start itching.

I also find that my hair receives conditioning properties better when I start off with clean hair. So yes, I'm one who could not do the no-poo method. I use shampoo twice a week with glee!

ITA with Nonie. I also have low porosity hair so I need to wash with shampoo (especially claifying/sulfates) in order to reap the benefits from conditioning.

i no poo with no problems. My hair is softer with less tangles and there's no bounce back period of getting moisture back after a shampoo.

Co-washing has been good to me n my hair. I do use a cone-free conditioner. No ill effects here.

E.T.A, I wash once every 1-2 weeks, as needed.
